Why are my cakes dying after 1st flush? * 1
    #25921518 - 04/07/19 03:42 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

Here's my problem, hopefully someone can help. I grew 10 brf cakes total, and all 10 produced decent fruits but after my first harvest they all quickly died (cake turned purple/grayish color?)I dunked them all separately since they were all harvested at separate times. The 1st batch in the f.c. was 9 cakes, they all started getting dark and discolored a day or two before fruiting was finished (looked like the fruits were sucking the life out of them) then right after harvest quickly turned dark and had a rotting vegetation smell before I had a chance to dunk again. I dunked each anyways but no results so I tossed them in a pot w/ manure dirt, if anything comes up I'll post it. Anyways I waited to birth the last cake, it was the last jar I filled so it was only filled up about half way and kinda dry so it took forever to colonize. Once fully colonized I waited 2 weeks to consolidate to give it a chance then birthed it. 10 days later I got a great harvest from the tiny cake (I'll post the dry weight when it drys, wet weight makes no difference to me) but again it's starting to look discolored. It was pretty dry so I threw it back in the chamber and misted a few times then figured I'd give it a day to recover before deciding to dunk again. If it helps I misted the last one with a peroxide solution when I put it back in the chamber , waited 30 seconds, then misted normally.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also if it helps I'm color blind so it's not easy to identify colors. The cake looked nice and white 3 days ago, I included pics of before and after the last harvest

Turned purple grey? Sounds like u got spores on ur cakes

All cakes lose water during fruiting.  That's why we dunk between flushes

With cakes I re dunk them after first flush. So they rehydrate a little for the next flush.
U can just mist it too.

Thanks, I did dunk the other 9 and they got worse. I had to give up all together after about a week on those. I'll trust that its bruising on the last one but I was very careful to only touch the fruit and not the cake. I looks to be dying like the others did. Is it normal for this to happen after 1 good flush or is there any conditions I can adjust to keep them going?

No instead of throwing the 9 cakes out I put them in dirt if I wasn't clear. I still have one left in my chamber. I'm looking for a real answer, wtf would I dunk them in manure??? I'm not trying to be a dick but if someone can give me real technical help I'd appreciate it

The dark cake looks bruised. How long did u wait for a second flush before you tossed them?

About 1 1/2 weeks in total after the first cake harvest and dunk. They got worse and smelled terrible, definitely no signs of bouncing back. I crushed them up in some dirt I got from an organic nursery, not sure exactly what's in the dirt but it's for their vegetables. I mix some spent coffee grounds in there too for fun.

I'm pretty sure the last ones were water logged (too much spraying) also too much direct sunlight. The newest cake fruited much more evenly after moving it under the window to avoid direct sunlight. I guess I'll just have to keep it moist and wait see if it bounces back. Still I don't think I've read anyone saying their cakes lasted one flush unless contaminated but I don't see contamination

If they don't smell like healthy mycelium wouldn't that be a sign of contamination?
Looks like a decent pull tho, better then nothing! live and learn...

Yes good point, I guess what I'm getting at is there must be something I'm doing wrong. 2 different strains, yes I know strains don't really matter but I find it hard to believe both types just die off after 1 flush. I hear about as many as 5-6 flushes, regardless of genetics I feel like I could make some adjustments and avoid this on my next run and hopefully save the last cake. It wasnt the h202 that killed the first batch (didnt use it 1st time) I have plenty of holes in my f.c, sterilized it several times before reusing, misted at a further distance to avoid overwatering, new perlite (different brand just in case) and better lighting conditions but the same results. As far as the contamination issue, the cakes all looked white and healthy right up to the day before fruiting finished consistantly for each one. Contamination would make sense but a contaminate shouldn't be able to decide to wait until the cake is in full bloom to say fuck it and attack it would attack any and all healthy cakes regardless

If it helps anyone I got it figured out, my HVAC vent was pretty close to my f.c (using window for lighting, moved it to another room with window away from vent) all the moving air was drying out my cake and sucking the humidity out of the chamber, don't know why I didnt think of it before, this thread was pointless for me but maybe it'll help someone else. I moved it into another space and put an hvac filter over the vent since I had some extras and it seemed like a good idea

I do cakes in the cold weather and sometimes they just flush once. Takes extra time to pin and everything else, but 7-8g comes out of each cake and they're done. Can't remember a time when I had second flushes. A good lesson in fruiting environments, if nothing else.

I know, I know, I know. This isn't what you're looking for, but you asked if anyone has any suggestions...

Have you considered switching over to grains and spawning to bulk? PF/BRF cakes are fine and all, but a lot more work. You've got a successful grow under your belt, perhaps it's time to graduate.
