Hericium erinaceus or Hericium abietis ?
    #2590766 - 04/22/04 11:21 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

I got mycelium of Hericium erinaceus some time ago.
Now the strain is fruiting on a block of wood fuel pellets but I am not sure if it is really Hericium erinaceus any more.
I did some search in the web and I found a page where it says that H. erinaceus is white to yellow whereas H.abietis is white to pinkish.
Since the mushroom turns to a pinkish color now I think that it might be H.abietis and not H.erinaceus.
What do you think?

Here are some pics:

I'm inclined to go with Hericium abietis, but because of the branches, not the color. H. erinaceus should look more like a solid mass with long teeth hanging from it. Your specimen has lots of small forked branches.

I wouldn't be at all suprised if somebody came up with a pink H. erinaceus or a yellow H. abietis.

Fortunately, all those species and their close relatives are choice edibles. Don't let them age too much, they often build up various organic acids that make them sour tasting.

They are excellent when fried and dipped in melted butter.

Happy mushrooming!
