Awesome find! I'm new to the area and began spotting alot of various mushrooms around so joined the forum to learn, revisiting a few spots I saw last year and hopefully find some like this :smile:

How long can the sub season last in tazzie??

Sydney- blue mountains it can be from mid march to mid august?


or is it too cold in july?

nice to see some action.  alas from afar.

tassie season can last from mid-march to mid-august in the right locations under the right conditions.

that includes Psilocybe subaeruginosa and Psilocybe semilanceata, although P. semilanceata from mid-march to early may and then august through october.

I don't think too cold is the issue, until an area ices over.  I have found subs in areas that get down to minus temperatures.  they will blacken from frost.

lack of nutrients and soil being too wet is the main issue. 

If your lucky a spot will get between 3 to 4 flushes before a season's available nutrients are used up, then other fungi or bacteria take over in the recycling process.

I have also observed that once the soil is saturated, fruiting stops.

The best way to not kill yourself is to take lots of pictures, take a spore print and post them up in the identification section on these forums! Make sure you research as much as you can too.

You cannot ask for locations or people to hunt with on these forums.

Hey guys went for a little bushwalk today and found some nice fungi.

Need a few id requests if thats okay, remove this post if it is wrong but im kinda just double checking the species i have sorry.

anyways phots are of cap and stem and gills underneath and if stem is hollow or not :smile:)

After hunting all day, finally managed to find some mature subs, I reckon these have been ready since the start of April because of the oxidization. It is still too warm and dry in most of southern tas unless you know exactly where to look.

Two to the left might be alutacea? The group to the right are subs, found in Hobart. Need more rain yet to get a decent haul.

They are all Psilocybe subaeruginosa. 

I would suggest you research Psilocybe alutacea as they are very different morphologically, and much closer to Psilocybe semilanceata in appearance.

Whats going on Tasmania?
I would love to come down there one day.
I often wish I could go down there in the summer cause it absolutely sucks here middle of summer.
Forty plus degrees, its ridiculous!
Melbourne here by the way.
I would love to try that Tasmanian subs and weed.

our bush in my opinion is some of the most beautiful in the world, mushroom season makes it even more enjoyable being out in it. Are there any actives on the east coast? I have never seen anyone from the area post in one of these threads and some of the bush up there is amazing to hike.

Found some nice subs today in areas of Hobart I have never looked before, was having a great time picking until this lovely older gentleman came out of nowhere taking photos of my car, was probably still 15 odd subs left in the patch I found. :mad:

A good friend of mine on his first year picking found some of the largest subs I have ever seen, the stems range from 10-15cm and the caps are quite large as well, jumbo clipper for reference

I went to the same spot today my friend and found more the same size, there is a pic above of mushrooms in the same area that I have posted and the substrate is almost identical. the substrate is mostly pine needles underneath that is moss, the area has lots of decaying wood and bark around it and is in an extremely shady cold area of Southern Tas, Further in the forest I was looking it turned into Eucalypt and I found slightly larger specimens again, this time in decaying eucalypt, the Myc in the area tho is like an actual root system of a plant, thickest Myc i have ever seen in my life.

It is motivating going out early though and finding a nice surprise like this, I forgot to mention above that most of the larger specimens were under a 'forest mat' of pine needles probably 3-4cm deep, lots of amanitas in the area as well. I hope everyone else has just as fruitful hunts as I have, areas should start popping up like crazy soon!

Nice find! Most of southern Tas has what you’re looking for now, just research the habitat that Subaeruginosa grow in and search google earth, you can’t ask for locations on the forum.

Went hunting today In the mountains just outside of Hobart, met up with some random hunters who were the coolest people, the guy I met found this monstrosity behind a man fern, I found the others in dead eucalyptus leaves/bark, had to remove the caps as they were ebadly starting to rot!

From nsw and have been travelling Tas for a few months. Normally can only pick cubes/cyans. First time finding subs, stoked! About an hour out of hobart :smile:

Went hunting today In the mountains just outside of Hobart, met up with some random hunters who were the coolest people, the guy I met found this monstrosity behind a man fern, I found the others in dead eucalyptus leaves/bark, had to remove the caps as they were ebadly starting to rot!

bottom left hand corner is Cortinarius archeri

do not consume as it is poisonous.  people have lost kidneys from confusing Cortinarius sp. with Psilocybe subaeruginosa

You can see the different shade of purple to the normal blue! Lucky you posted it here :smile:


Cortinarius archeri has a brown spore print too I think, a great way to double check (along with posting images here) is to take a spore print! Subaeruginosa will have a black/dark purple spore print.

Mushrooms like Cortinarius archeri and galerina (two species people mistake with subaeruginosa) will have a brown/rusty brown prints.

You can then take the spores and spread them around!!!

Found enough today for the rest of the season, I’m not going to be posting photos of large finds anymore because I don’t want too much attention in this thread. just know that there are enough subs in the bush at the moment for the whole of Tasmania to experience ego loss, get out in the middle of the state if you can and go mental! :grin:

Nope. Azures only grow in the Pacific North West in the States and is usually found on beaches growing around coastal dune grass.

Pulled up at a spot where it looked like subs would be and They were there, beautiful specimens these, I also left some smaller mushrooms that were pinning right next to the subs I found, they have bluing on the stipe but the cap is a lot darker than any sub I’ve ever found. These were found in blackberry bushes I find the stems are longer in grassy areas and the caps seem much larger in darker piney or eucalypt areas.

This thread is not for identification, you should post your finds in their own thread so you can have trusted identifiers help you I’d your mushrooms!

Also providing info such as pictures of gills and also spore prints will help aid identification (to do a spore print place them on foil or paper and leave for 8-24 hours then take a pic)


You’re looking for mushrooms which bruise blue as you can see in the other pics in this thread. The ones you have sort of look similar to subaeruginosa but I can’t really tell from just those photos. Gotta be 100% sure before you eat them, because if they’re not subs you could end up taking a trip to the ER!

:whathesaid: It is also extremely important to the survival of the species as a whole. Having humans constantly pick Subs that haven't dropped their spores, whilst not picking other mushrooms equally, could cause a selection bias that can threaten the species.
Cutting the mature mushroom at it's base, instead of pulling it up, will also help prevent any damage to the Mycelial network that takes years to develop.
Tap the caps, snip the stems and leave the pins... please. :tongue: 

Unfortunately I'm going to be a lot less active this season, with only the occasional weekend hunt. :sad:

I agree, the areas I hunt barely have any human contact so the myc can do it’s thing bar once a year when I pick it, it is extremely distressing to go into well known areas and see rubbish left around the place and the mycelium torn up and fucking left to die, treat the species and the areas with respect, we have some of the most beautiful potent natural species in the world no need for them to go missing.

Obviously it can be tricky to maintain proper picking etiquette when you're in a public area and time is of the essence, however, I'm seeing far too much Mycelium and a disturbing amount of pinheads in that photo!
Cutting the stems at the base and leaving the caps to open will ensure that patch survives the season and pops back up next year! :thumbup:

As for the concave/wavy caps; it's most likely due to age. It's a very common phenotype seen in P. Cyanescens and could be be something that's heritable in different variants of Subaeruginosa.
If anyone else has a better understanding on the morphology of Subs, I would also love to hear!

I had 8 grams dry and 20 mins later drank a tea with 30 in the pot. Was a pretty intense come up, felt out of body and a little confused but was very enlightening.

I don't get the time to trip these days but I micro dose a bit. In one pach I know there are these dainty little ones that grow near rushes, but their strong. They don't blue much. Once I had 2.5g fresh which I considered a micro dose and they took me for a bit of a ride. I think perhaps their another species or strain. Those little guys scare me a bit. Be careful potency does vary.

Don't love bad trips (had quite a few), and not taking enough (underwhelming trips). Tolerance is crap too.

As most would know subs love woodchips and can grow in very large numbers, but not so for bush subs (occasionally they can). That's why it was nice to find these (there were even more just out of shot)




Lastly, I just wanted to share some pictures of magic mushrooms that don't always look like magic mushrooms.





I wanted to share these just so people know that when some subs start drying out, they can start to look quite different, and if you aren't familiar with this, you could be walking straight pass them.  I wouldn't advise new hunters to make identifications on any potential shroom if the mushroom has started to decay/dry out too much, it's just too risky. but if your very familiar with subs. Just double check, it could just be.

Hello and welcome to the Shroomery.

Generally a season will start around april and last till august. Sometimes the season can start earlier and sometimes later. I find that shrooms really start to pop up from may to around early to mid July then they start to disappear.  You can sometimes still find shrooms in august or even September sometimes. but they are usually harder to find that late in the season. Hope that helps you.

Psilocybe subaeruginosa surely can vary in appearance, and im only taking about when their fresh healthy adult specimens.  Throw in a little (or a lot) of decay or drying, and the appearance variations goes up even more (much more)!!!  Damn subs....., Still love them though :thumbup::heart::mushroom2:

Wise words Subscription, a saying I've read many times on this site is a good moto to remember & practice, "When in doubt, chuck it out".  Or one could take the time to do a proper id request on this site I guess.

To new(er) hunters. Never ever eat a mushroom that your not 100% sure about. And part of that 100% sureness should include an identification request post on this site.

Hey Guys, New To the Forum and this was my first year picking.
Went out with a mate not far from Launceston and had a blast, managed to find some beauties but my camera died while picking so only have photos at home, will definitely get some better pictures next time.

ECH! Be careful! some of them look dodgy!

MAKE SURE TO KEEP CAPS AND STEMS TOGETHER! otherwise you'll have to throw some out if you get them mixed up!

Like above said, you should post your own thread so Trusted identifiers can respond with what they think you've got.

Also, probably best to take some spore prints. I'm almost 100% sure some of them are not subaeruginosa! Potentially poisonous!

The middle three ‘lily pad’ looking caps are the only subs in that photo, the one even below those is not active. make your own thread and get a TI to ID the three caps I described above and chuck the rest.

I’ve looked for P. Sem since the start of the season, no luck same with alutacea, I read posts from fellow Tasmanian obtuse that they fruit from roughly the start of April till the end of May the June frosts just about end them down here. I’ve found subs tho right up until the end of August. I’ve heard the midlands is a very good area for libertys, lots of sheep grazing pastures, never had the time to travel that far yet sadly.

My way of drying without a dehydrator works fine and is sort of a diy version of one anyway, get a very small cupboard, say one the size of a small kitchen cupboard, a heater (1-1500w) will do, a desk fan or some sort of smaller fan (I use a pc fan) turn both on sit the mushrooms on a cooling rack on a piece of paper or paper bag and leave the heater and fan on overnight. It usually doesnt exceed say 50c inside the cupboard, if you dont feel safe doing it overnight, the same process can be repeated of a day time obviously, mine are completely cracker dry overnight, it could possibly be done in a shorter time, im just lazy. :grin:

I blew up my dehydrator on the day of my first find of the season :mad:

Until I can get a new one (this weekend), I've been drying in the oven on the lowest heat setting (about 35c) for several hours, up to about 5.

This dries them nice and crispy, but blackens them somewhat. Does anyone know if the blackening is problematic?

I've started hunting this season for the first time, with some pretty good success after some tips from a mate. I reckon I've got about 80-100 dried and ready for the next 12 months :smile:
Went out for a quick walk with the dog this morning and came across these beauties. I suppose after the rain and with the continuation of the mild weather, they might still be fruiting for a while!

slight oxidization, try the method above i stated it could probably be done in 5 hours, my stems stay relatively grey.

I remember when I started hunting, I went looking for hours and hours and hours and hours with little or no luck.  Unfortunately, it happens to nearly every new hunter.  It can be very frustrating and disheartening, but I encourage you to keep getting out and looking, cause as you do, you start to get better not only in where to look, but also where not to look too.  I remember a member (mushroom_spider) from a few years ago (Tassie thread 2013 & 14) that went through similar to what you're going through atm.  At first he struggled to find any but eventually the guy was finding them all over the place.
So the advice I give you is to just keep looking (and don't give up).

Another thing that I suggest to you and new members is to go through older Tassie or Victorian actives threads from previous years (around 2013-2016) (Vic has more post, pictures and discussions).
I found that if you read the whole thread you can pick up some handy information and it also helps to get more familiar with what subs look like.

Also, check out this thread which is all about habitats shots from Australia of where subs were found. It's a good thread to check out too.

Good luck for the rest of the year and for the years to come.  There's still some time left in this season so if I was you, I'd be hunting at every possible moment.  No matter how you go for the rest of this year remember, each hunt you go on is a opportunity to learn and the more you learn, the better you'll get.  Once winter ends, keep an eye out for potential spots so that next year you have places to already look at.

Congratulations on your first successful hunt.  If you've never had magic mushrooms before, you're in for a amazing experience :mindblown: :awecid:  :trippy: .

Just in case you don't have a system for drying and storage of shrooms yet.  Use the search function to read posts about doing just so (most people use dehydrators or fans).

When it's time to store (they've gotta be cracker dry (or very close to) the main thing you want to do is keep them in a airtight container. You also need to remove moisture from the container too so find some way of using desiccant to remove all the moisture.  If you don't get rid of the moisture?, It's my understanding it will cause the dried mushrooms to lose their active ingredient, rendering the dried mushrooms useless.  Correctly stored mushrooms can last for a few years according to what I've read on this site.

Just ask if you need help on drying and storage.

I'd roughly guess that you've got around 5 to 10 grams when your finds are finally dried.  As for how much to take, you may want to do a search on this site for previous post on what's a good amount to start on, but id say go for at least 2.5grams.  I recon 3grams (or 3.5) would be better, as it should give you a good mildly powerful trip.
(btw not something you need to worry about now, but when you get the chance, do a search of mushroom tolerance).

On the subject of consuming magic mushrooms, there are three common ways most people eat them;

1. Just eating the mushrooms (dried or fresh). Can taste yucky (but it's not too bad)
2. Making shroom tea
3. Lemon Tek(ing)

Again I recommend a search on consuming to help you decide.

The only thing I would add is that 3-3.5g dried can definitely give you more than a "mildly powerful trip". Especially if it's your first encounter with shrooms or psychedelics in general.

I would not advise any more than 1-1.5g dried for someones first experience without knowing them personally.

The variability in potency and a person's mind is far too important to safely recommend a mid-high level dose for their first encounter. :tongue2:

This is great advice guys listen to this post because I did not. Had 3.3 the first time beautiful experience, ‘ego loss’ is achievable on that amount alone. Tried 5.6 then 5.2 a fortnight later trying to be Terrence McKenna and both times had terrible anxiety and thought the world was legit ending.they were insightful experiences but they are not for everyone, work your way up. I will be starting from 2.5 next time. High doses keep you away from shrooms for 6 months or more, that is my experience anyway. Safe travels everyone. :mushroom2:

I kinda based the number of 3 to 3.5g based on my first ever mushroom trip.  I was given 3 caps by a friend (not sure if they were 1g caps) and while I did have a trip from those 3 caps, I didn't have any visual or audio changing effects.  So I was kinda basing my suggestion on my own experience.  But in saying that, you are right, there are too many varying factors that I guess I should have thought more about when suggesting to Litoria to try 3 to 3.5g for his first trip.  Sorry about that guys.

I did however still suggest to him to do a search on what's the best dosage to start off with. I just should have made it more clear.

I'd like to know too, went on my first mushroom hunt on the weekend as per my ID post, but hoping there is at least a few weeks left of mushie season for me to hone my hunting skills...

The suposed mental health benefits are too intriguing to pass up.

I hadn't done mushrooms for several years (since I was in college where they grew around the campus) but had some last summer and remembered what I was missing out on.
This season I have checked out so many locations since the beginning of the season and while I've found plenty of mushrooms - none have been the right type.
Although a few times I've seen picked and discarded mushrooms that look similar so I suspect others went through those places first.
I went for another walk today and noticed plenty of new mushrooms sproting but the wrong type again.
I was really hoping to find even a single mature sub to get a spore print off so I could make a syringe and have a go at growing, once I got going I had ideas of restocking local areas but it appears it's not meant to be unfortunately.
I swear they used to be quite easy to find.

I'm going to try yet another spot tomorrow, has anyone else had luck this late in the season so far?

Also I read about a guy who was saying you should be using scissors to cut mushrooms rather then pull them out to minimise distubing mycellium  so they'd be more likely to have second flushes that season and grow back in following years.
Kind of comparing it to pulling out an apple tree for a single apple instead of just picking the fruit.
Is there any truth to this?

You're gonna need to spend a decades worth of luck to find some at this time of year unfortunately!

You'll have to wait till April next year before they start coming again :smile:
