Monotub looking sketchy (pics)
    #25915856 - 04/04/19 04:42 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

Grains(1:4) spawned in clasic coco-verm according to standard procedure (well rated teks).
Pasteurised and at field capacity.
10 days of incubation post mixing, top foil layer ( with holes spaced at around 5 cm in-between) was lifted and to my surprise, substrate shows little colonisation and looks different from other monos I could find online.
Do you suspect contamination?

B+ LC of aggressive isolate was used for grains and showed not visible contamination.
Tub has a normal smell.

FAE can  only help. Show us a pic that isnt through plastic. And ditch the foil top layer for next time dont do that IDK where you heard that but its completely unneccesary.

Checked the bottom and mycelium looks well established but not as dense as it seems in pictures I've seen online.

Looks wet, did you check the coir/verm for field capacity before using it?

Yeah barely a drip trickled down my wrist when squished in fist at full strength, very fluffy doesn't seem wet at all in real life. I actually thought it look a bit dry.

Just re-read the OP, this looks perfect for 10 days, put her into fruiting conditions if it isnt already,

Should I add a late casing? At my disposal I have the option of a perlite verm casing. Which from what I've read ( if I did not misunderstood) from RR is a viable option.

wouldn't recommend it , and theres no perlite casing you must be thinking of verm

i would fruit it as is , looks good

Just leave it be and let it do its thing.  Looks like its just starting to grow through your top layer.

"We using 'Perlite' in our casings because perlite works not by holding water, but by preventing clumping and providing lots of air pockets in the layer itself, which stimulates primordia. By mixing perlite with vermiculite, you get the best of both worlds . . .moisture retention in the vermiculite, and air retention in the perlite. Ph balancing isn't necessary unless you add peat, which isn't absolutely required for cubes"

a lot of info on RR's notes is outdated ; i haven't seen perlite in casings ever

you can ask around in different forums ; you'll have to grow both ways and see results , i guess

After a quick scroll through pubmed and a few research papers I can say for sure perlite in casings is indeed a good idea. Though, the highest yield was achieved with a peat-perlite-verm casing(60-20-20). Out of necessity I will go with a 75-25 of verm/perlite.

good luck man , please show pics of results , so you can really say for sure :smirk:

peat is known to have woody material and cause trich regularly , so a very thorough pasteurization is required ,  organic material is not a good idea with casings IMO , look at the dates of the articles you're reading.

and my two cents would be to keep it simple , start easy with coco which is an awesome sub for eveything and very contam resistant , and then move on if you think is needed.

have you read new teks ?

The dates were 2015 to 2017 if I'm not mistaken. I did not post references which is my bad I figured not everyone has an access pass to scientific literature data bases. I've seen many growers increasing their yield with a casing and the same isolate so I figured I should just try it. My sub is coco. I sterilised the verm perlite casing ( I know I could have pasteurised it but I had space in my pc). Will keep you updated:tongue:

seems you want to do it your way ; i will recommend it again , follow the already proved techniques then change them if required .

good luck and post results !
