A2G slow mycelium growth
    #25913833 - 04/03/19 03:14 PM (5 years, 9 months ago)

So the grains in the below picture have had the mycelium grow pretty slow recently, and now it seems to have stopped. Does it look ready to spawn? I think they've been like that for several days.

Inoculated 10.3. and 25.3. had some decent growth around the agar wedges, which is also when I shook the jars. I have 8 jars and they all look like in the image above. Healthy, but not as white as I have seen others have in pictures around here. Shouldn't the jars be fully white already?

That's super bacterial maybe bacillus? If that's correct .. but basically I see full colonization it's just super whispy and not healthy

Do you have pics of the agar plates?

How fast does it recover after a shake? If it takes more than a couple days you might have trouble.

Damn, I guess that could explain the slow growth. But if all of them are equally slow, it must have come from the grains. How do you determine if something looks bacterial?

Sorry, the rest are in the fridge and wouldn't want to start taking them out just for a picture. But they did look perfectly fine. Pure white, beautiful growth to 100% of the plates, no wet spots or anything out of the normal.

I'll try and report later.

It could be the grain how long did you pc? Did you g2g any of those or all are a2g?

I think they are super not happy and possibly entirely fucked. I'd be curious to see the donor plates as well. I'd shake them up really well and see if they bounce back or stall out. Oats can look a little light upon full colonization but that's just too light IMO.

The fingers of myc are signs as well ... and it's already knotting..

possibly "knotting" but remember, trich is mycelium and also appears to be Knotting before it goes green. It also looks thin and grey and whispy while it's just taking hold of the media.

No I agree and know trich is a tricky bitch but those are shroom knots atleast that's what I feel ... I think due to the bacteria its speeding up the survival mode haha...

Look at those fingers of myc coming out of the grain those aren't rhizo its myc running away from something

After boiling the grains I did let the them dry in the colander for couple hours, then overnight in the fridge. I can't remember how long I pc'd the grains, but should have been the amount in Bod's grain tek, which is 2 hours. I may have rushed it a bit and cooked for like come up + 1 hour 45-50 minutes + cool down. My PC also has some trouble going to the highest pressures, so that could be a reason for bacteria. Next time I'll compensate with longer time, like 2 hours 15 minutes.

All 8 of the jars are a2g. This is my first try with agar. Have done syringes to glasses of brf/verm before like 4-5 times, but only once did I succeed with it, so switched to agar.

Can't upload picture of the plates because of some maintenance going on here at shroomery. I'll try again tomorrow.

I shook 4 of the 8 jars and we'll see how they manage to spread again.

On the left is a non-shaked one and on the right one that I shook 8 days ago. I suppose it's safe to say these are contaminated and I can toss them?

Here is one of the plates. The myc is actually quite white, the camera just turned it a bit yellowish tone.

EDIT: Opened one of the jars. The smell is bit weird. I smell mushroom but also something else. I guess it's bacteria.

Asking also how do I cleanup and reuse these jars? I already emptied them and put them in the dish washer. Do I need to use chlorite after the wash?

EDIT: Sorry, forgot double posting/bumping is forbidden within 24 hours! Will not do again.

It’s your post dude double post away, nothing wrong about that. I just wash the jars like any other dirty dish.
You’re going to PC them anyway which will kill anything left behind.

The dishwasher should take care of it all just fine, thorough rinse and load it like the other dishes. Iso alcohol off any marker marks after.
Question, did you properly vent your PC before putting the weight on there? If not then that COULD be what went wrong.

Alright, will just run them in the dishwasher. Thanks.

I have probably bit different kind of pressure cooker, which says nothing about venting. It's just put the stuff in, heat until the heat marker shows it's pressurized, then lower the heat and leave it boiling quietly.

STOP, don't listen to those punks, they don't look at all contaminated to me, perfect I say. But I'd check all sides and give it a sniff to be sure.

All mycelium on straight grain will focus on the inside since thats where all the water is stored. The shell's very nutritious too but thats not where it will start. Your jars don't even have excess water so they really have no reason to go out the grain

If you're still unsure use the spawn for a small batch.

Next time try chucking in 20% wheat bran mixed with equal water weight before PC. I always get strong rhizo with extra bran. Also, leaving your culture on top of the spawn will allow it to colonise the top layer quick & control airborne contaminants.
