Bioaccumulating Toxins from Cigarette Butts
    #25910021 - 04/01/19 05:32 PM (4 years, 10 months ago)

So I was out spreading some cyan myc and I went to a local grocery store with a buttload of woodchips and I dumped some mycelium on a spot that looked promising (shaded, irrigated, good microclimate etc) but then I realized there was a ton of cigarette butts all over that one spot. I figure it's the spot where employees go on their breaks, but it got me thinking about fungal bioaccumulation and if that's something I should worry about right there. The mycelium is already there so I expect some fruiting next season, but I might just leave those alone.

What does everything think?

No, don't worry about it.

Bioaccumulation of mushrooms is mostly a myth, and when it does happen, it's just heavy metals.  Cigarette butts don't have enough heavy metals to make them a risk to grow edible mushrooms from.

Thanks Alan!

I remember reading about Peter Mccoy growing some oysters on cigarette butts, which is pretty darn cool! Didn't Stamets talk about them growing on oil contaminated substrates? Would you still say those oysters are safe to eat?

I've always been fascinated by fungal bioaccumulation and mycoremediation, but obviously, like many myco-myths, it gets blown out of proportion

You definitely don't want to eat any mushroom that grows where heavy metals are present or pesticides are used or on treated wood, other than that I don't think it's a problem, it's an area that should be looked into more.

Eating mushrooms from where pesticides are used is fine, as they have very low levels of heavy metals and the mushrooms rip the pesticide molecules apart and turn them into food.

Woah that is so cool! Alan, do you happen to have a reference to that? I would love to look that up.

That being said, I'm sure that only refers to pesticides absorbed through the mycelium. You probably still have to be careful if there was a recent spraying that got on the actual fruits

Doc, I have heard of that with treated wood, but do you happen to know what chemicals would be present in the fruiting body with treated wood?

No.

The stuff that gets sprayed usually isn't that toxic, even if they spray it directly you'll probably not notice any effect.

Depends on when it was treated - older stuff usually uses arsenic.

Until 2003 lumber was treated with chromated copper arsenate

Today, lumber is treated with Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ), Copper Azole (CA), and Micronized Copper Azole (MCA).

Edit: Azoles are used in all kinds of products we use every day.

Thanks fellas! I'll stay clear of treated wood mushrooms. Didn't someone find some gyms that were growing out of fence posts a while back?
