Yeah its 99.999%

He got it on Ebay. It is damaged in that one section significantly (lower middle), along with some superficial bends... but I believe it to be repairable from the research I've done.

The otherside looks perfectly fine.

I'm remaining cautiously optimistic. He was really happy about the deal he got on it and looking forward to working with me on making it. We haven't been close in past years

It doesn't need to be 99.999. 99.99 is plenty good.

You can find pinholes with a lighter test, it will get blown out in any pinhole.

Flip it over. The "top" doesn't look nearly as bad. You just need to make sure the air is flowing thru the filter in the proper direction. But with a 2x2 filter... you can set it on any side you want...

The filter manufacturers say to orient the filter with the pleats vertical. I've seen it in a few of the data sheets. Not sure why, but that's what they say.

I’m in the middle of my build right now, I have the pieces cut, stained and first coat of finish.  Please someone let me know if it will work with the pleats horizontal! Lol.

I have a 20x24 and someone pointed out that it isn’t high enough for bags and to turn it on it’s side....so I designed it accordingly.

20inches is tall enough for bags.

Actually I'm confused.

It's not hard to confuse me tho either. Haha

I remember my 24x24 astrocel filter has a "TOP" orientation with horizontal pleats but I don't know why. Could just be for mounting hardware.

I read it on the BIOmax HEPA pdf. biomax brochure

Quote:

• Sizes listed above are actual filter sizes, excluding gaskets • Manufacturing tolerance: +0”, -0.125”. • Install BioMAX filters with pleats in vertical position.

it's listed under table of sizes.

Shit....

Thanks for mentioning that sandman!

Edit:  I went on the link and read it.  It doesn’t say why but that definitely makes sense.  Just have to cut my sides down and make a new top.  You saved me some heartache!  Thanks.

It's to prevent sagging. Pleats will sag in spots here and there. Usually there ran tight enough so the "sag" is very limited though.

Just speculating here, but it may have to do with the aluminum separators rubbing on the filter media in a different way when they are horizontal. They are wedged in there and any kind of rubbing can easily damage the filter media. The media is about as resilient as cotton candy (exaggeration, but it's really fragile)

After thinking about it, it also seems like the air currents would work better vertically, like little layers of protection.  Contams fall through one layer then the next one sweeps it away.  Vertically just wouldn’t be the same....in my mind, just thinking out loud.

Thanks everybody!

Im not understanding why flipping it would make a difference.  Aside from aesthetics that is.  I mean if there is some fatal flaw in that damaged area, the whole things cashed anyway right?

Also I had considered using the otherside (which like I said is in better shape) as the outward facing side. I mean the hepa is all the same throughout structurally to my understanding. The only difference at all is the foam strip on the edges on the one side which I could easily put on the otherside.

As long as the box is air tight, does it really matter which side you have facing outward?

Im gonna go out on a limb here and say.. yes?  I dont see why it would it matter.  If you had a flowhood made the "right" way (pleats vertical) and layed the box on its side, would it magically stop filtering?

Im not trying to be a smart ass or a know it all, I just fail to understand why it wouldnt work.

I found this build and i really like the looks of it, the guy did a fantastic job.  The best flowhood build vid I've found.

I say flip it over because the "top" isn't all bent up and you'll be doing your culture work near the bottom of the filter. And flipping it over would keep the fins vertical.

If you flip a speaker upside-down... does it affect the sound? All a speaker is doing is moving air as well.

:whathesaid:

What's probably more important is pushing air through it from the correct side.
