Cakes won't colonize and substrate shrinks in jars
    #25905410 -

Hi dudes,

I am growing shrooms using BRF tek. I used this method before with positive results, but the last two times I wanted to grow I am not seeing any colonisation in the jars and the substrate in some of the jars has drastically shrunk. As you can see in the pictures, there is quite a bit of empty space on the top and side of that jar, but the jars were filled to the brim when I was starting.

Why do you think the cakes shrink? Am I not packing the substrate corretctly, am I sterilising them wrong? Shouldn't I see at least some colonisation? Does this mean that my spores are bad?

More info:
Substrate - 2 parts verm, 1 part water, 1 part BRF
I don't have a pressure cooker, I sterilise the jars in a big pot, place them in the steam above water.
The jars are kept in about 25C (77F) in ambient lighting of the room.
No colonisation for 2 weeks now.

What is that grey stuff that looks like ash?

Are u filling the top inch with pure dry vermiculite? Where did your spores come from?

Hmmmm.

Perhaps pack your material down a bit on the next one. I pack my cakes with medium-density to get more bang for the buck if u will.
