How to properly use SFD with metal lids?

Hi all, so I have some SFDs on the way. Wanted to switch from micropore tape. So I’ve done some reading, and I see some people say that the best way to use the is flip the lid upside down, put on SFD, then ring. Then I’ve also seen people say put it directly under the lid. So for clarity, if I’m using 70mm metal lids (I’d rather not use plastic) which method should I use? And is tinfoil still necessary while PCing if using a SFD? And last but not least, they are reusable right? I will only be doing A2G and G2G, no poking the hole

When I do jars I do lid then filter then ring and I do not flip the lid. You also still need foil you do not want the SFD to get wet. Also you can reuse them. Many ways will work though

You don't have to worry about synthetic filter discs getting wet👍 won't hurt anything to cover them up though.
You can drill half-inch holes in the lids and cut the synthetic filters to fit and Silicon them on.
Makes them stretch like 7 times further.

And Make sure you sand around the hole(the size of the sfd) on the side your gonna stick it to make a secure sealing There's nothing for the silicone to really hold on to without scratching the surface first

Good point I've never had issues with it, but maybe its grabbing on all the burrs I'm leaving from the bit lol

I ended up ordering the exact size for my lids so I’m just going to use a whole circle, save me buying the silicon too aha. I’m trying to follow the KISS method (keep it simple stupid) until I’m more comfortable haha. Been at it since December, but right when I think I know everything there is another learning curve. Do you recommend 1 1/2” hole in the lid though? I’ve been doing 1 1/4” hole and was wondering if I should be going a bit bigger.

Worked on boats for a few years and its a standard when caulking things in place, even if your screwing/bolting pieces together, it better stops water from penetrating as well as making a better stick.
Edit: no need for holes just loosen up the jar lid a bit if using a whole one

Might be easier that way
I used to use quarter-inch holes but it seems like with more gas exchange it colonizes faster.
I would be scared of the grains drying out with the whole mouth of the jar being filtered vs a small spot. But if there's enough inoculation points it shouldn't matter.

No doubt more surface area = better adhesion. I've just been lucky I guess haha. Plus these lids have only seen a couple dozen runs, not super long term yet. But they seem ok for now.

So you use 1/2” now?
