Thanks all, they're a confusing bunch of mushrooms I've been finding. Lots of different phenotypes and from what Heyowana has brought forth there's more than once species.

DNA  sequencing of P.undescribed and P.papuana showed that they werent similar.

From a mushroom eaters perspective as well. So I dont know if you want to test this out Bob. P.undescribed has a mushroomy taste. Fairly mild. Easy to eat. P.papuana has a metallic tangy taste that is quite bitter on the aftertaste.

So if you do a taste test on those yellow specimens it might help you know if they are different to the P.papuana you are finding.

Alan Rockefeller had this to say about the two samples I sent him of P.papuana and P.undescribed.
'The two are very different. One is really close to P.keralensis from China and India, and the other is closest to Psilocybe caerulescens/mexicana, but still not that close.' Interesting when I googled P.keralensis. Problem is I don't know which DNA sequence goes with what.
Unfortunately I'm not sure which is which!

I cant get over the resemblance of bobwastaken's bunches of P.papuana to P.caerulescens.

Maybe our P.papuana is like a caerulescens mushroom of hardwood forests, log piles and logging activities. They certainly grow well down south. Wish I could find them in that quantity.

Fascinating. I wonder which species it turns out to be. Thanks for the tip on differentiating the species on taste. I haven't tasted any but since you mentioned it they have a distinctively different smell. I find the P.papuana smell similar to P.subaeruginosa while the gold specimens resemble the smell of field mushrooms more closely.

I recently made some more finds in a paddock. Not sure which species. Very robust specimens with a deep rooted, flexible stipe which was difficult to extract. The stipe would have to be 10mm thick.

Nice find Dreamworks. They'll be everywhere soon.

Speaking of snakes any idea of this species?

I stepped by it after a picture and found some P.alutacea nearby.
First time I've seen them fruit from cow manure. In SA they only fruit from roo dung or horse manure it seems.

Then a storm moved in. Dumped 50mm in a matter of minutes. Also something we don't get in SA. Was awesome to experience.

Some recent shots of a pine forest inland from Port Macquarie.

I found lots of P.subaeruginosa throughout the pines. :bliss:

A.muscaria

and today, inland from Bega. Lot's of P.subaeruginosa coming up.

Wow those robust Psilocybe sp. look very interesting. Were they joined at the stipe?
The dark almost black/blue staining has me wondering- how little I know.
They look unique. So attached to clay soil and no woody debris.

You have made my day with these beautiful pics. Keep at it. Who knows what you'll find next. I sure can't wait to find out.

I just hope more people have a look at some of your finds. Its very interesting to say the least.

Psilocybe aucklandiae is one of the most intensely bruising species in the world, usually such a dark reaction it is almost black, often with a violet hue, the specimens in my image show very little bruising because I have not abused them in any way, my collection methods are likely very different to most people here because I am trying to preserve the taxonomic characteristics.

I really haven't got a clue. Yet I keep thinking I have seen these. Even though I havent. I'd love to know how potent they are. If you need a tester for potency I'll volunteer. Wouldn't need many at that size I imagine.

Inski or Alan Rockefeller should check them out. If they havent already. I'd be so interested to know what they thought. Bobwastaken I congratulate you. Wish I was down there finding these species.

Awesome habitat shots Bobwastaken.  That area is so beautiful and pristine.  I love these Australia posts this time of year when everything here is waiting to wake up.  Thanks for sharing.  Makes me want to visit Australia if I can ever get the time and money.

If that robust Psilocybe sp was attached to wood or woody debris I'd guess P.subaeruginosa var australiana. But since they aren't?? Well then it will be interesting to find
out what they are.
That juvenile one on its own does look like a subaeruginosa but I'm probably wrong.

I'm excited to share with you all my first finds of the year, they aren't out it large quantity just yet, but I was able to pick a few mature caps, all found among pine.

I wish everyone good luck this season, I hope to see lots of good images and to share some more of my own!

The P.undescribed species consensus has changed on mushroomobserver.
MO 271407 & MO 268682 has changed from Psilocybe papuana to Psilocybe sp.

There is a name proposal of Psilocybe sect. Zapotecorum by Alan Rockefeller. Based on chemical features from his sequence data.

This is exciting news because this makes it the only species found in this section in this country.

Plus I can now call it Psilocybe sect. Zapotecorum.

Thanks. I always wondered what P.zapotecorum would be like. Same with P.aucklandiae which is in section Zapotecorum. Now I have a mushroom that grows locally which is in that section also.

I think that's pretty cool. They have a pretty cool effect as well. Not frantic like papuana but very calm and centered. I cant microdose with them though. They like papuana are that potent that I get out of it on tiny doses.

Maybe I have low tolerance to psilocybin mushrooms. All evidence points to this not being the case however.
