White film/fuzz on caps? (pics)
    #7495876 - 10/08/07 12:16 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I've seen fuzzy white mycelium running up the stipes of growing mushrooms, but what about on the caps? I picked a couple of shrooms with this white film/fuzz on the caps.

The white stuff comes off if I wipe the cap with a tissue, and there doesn't seem to be a particularly foul smell (though the smell of cubies seems to be unusually strong).

On several of them, the caps also wouldn't open up completely. For example, this one stayed like this for several days before I finally picked it.

Could this be some sort of rot or contamination? Safe to eat still, after drying, you think?

My guess is these fruits are from the third or later flush.
If so, this is sort of common, don't worry about it.

It could possibly be a case of verticillium, but we would need
to see the substrate with a good picture to even make a guess
at that. I can't tell just by seeing the fruits.

Chances are you're okay and your substrate is just dying out.

Mitch, thanks for the response. You are mostly correct -- these are from the 2nd flush.

What exactly is verticillium? I've taken a picture of the substrate. Most of it seems to be covered by this fuzzy layer, but it's not cobweb. I dabbed some h2o2 on it and nothing happened.

I'm soaking the casing in the tub for a quick dunk. Worth it, at this point? There appear to be more pins coming up, but I'm not sure if the chances of contamination make this worthwhile.

Verticillium [Re: archivist]
    #7499584 - 10/08/07 11:26 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Verticillium is a filamentous fungus that inhabits decaying vegetation
and soil, like house plant soil.

If you get a contamination of verticillium, it could be because of a
lack of proper pasteurization of casing soil. Or if you did properly
pasteurize your casing soil, it would most likely be due to a lack of
fresh air exchange and/or temperatures that are too high.

Verticillium, like other imperfect fungi such as cobweb mold, like
humid environments with stale air and high temperatures.
Therefore increasing FAE and dropping temps a bit in future grows
would help prevent this...

now on to your case:

If you sprayed peroxide, and nothing happened, there's a good
chance it's not verticillium. You would have seen a reaction if it was. Like a fizzing or melting. You can test fruits this way too.

I'm no expert, but given what you've told me I would think you
don't have verticillium.

Thanks again, Mitch. I'm probably let this sit for a few more days and try to get a couple more healthy looking fruits, then scrap it and start a new tub. Returns appear to be diminishing at this point (2nd flush was only about 150 wet grams, with most of the fruits looking much less healthy than those from the first flush.

This is how they look now. Mostly the same with a few partially opened caps and a few dying caps. It's still fuzzy on the stipe.
