College courses * 1
    #25692896 - 12/21/18 12:27 AM (5 years, 1 month ago)

Hey how's it going guys? I was curious as to what classes one would want to take if they were wanting to attend a community college in Oregon. I've always had a fascination with edible mushrooms, born in the midwest i'd often go morel hunting with my father growing up. I looked forward to picking morels in the spring and chicken in the fall. Most recently my curiosity has turned a little psychoactive. I'd love to start furthering my education and take some college courses now that i moved to Oregon. What classes should i make sure to take? biology? microbiology? thanks for any help.

Paul Stamets offers a weekend course on growing. He’s in Olympia, Washington. Check out his site FungiPerfecti.com

Biology, any type of plant/botany class.

Also - not a college class but check out facebook pages or if you have a nature center or something in your area. I took a mushroom cultivation class at my local nature center. It was only a day long but we got a small oyster mushroom grow and it was super informational. There's also a fungus festival in my area once a year so maybe see if there's something like that to get connected/more info on classes.

Mycologos offers classes as well I think, but I don't know a ton about them.

I'll look into the local area! Hopefully there's some cool stuff to dabble in, I'd love to take a class, I've learned so much from this site, but who can say no to more knowledge?

Start with the basics. Take an intro to biology, psych 101, chemistry 101.

Many of the courses are likely to have a laboratory portion where you'll actually be performing small experiments. As you move through the coursework you may find particular sections more (or less) interesting than others. Discuss with your professors ways to get deeper into the material you like. The 1:1 interactions with a professor are one of the big advantages to traditional college coursework (versus online free lectures etc.). Take advantage.

Ive heard from a couple people it's garbage and also over $1000 lmfao here's one testimonial

Quote:

The seminar was the most depressing & non educational that could have occurred.

I taught myself from reading a couple of books & experimenting....in six months....

I will never know everything & I don’t expect to & that is not the point.
But considering my first inoculation took place March 23....I should have heard something new at a seminar that costs 1200.

It was heartbreaking. When somebody asked about the fruiting triggers/parameters for one type of mushroom he literally said he had no idea & to ask one of his staff...

College is work but if you can score a nice job without it you win. I have a bachelors degree, actually two of them from taking so many community college classes.

Choose something that is interesting to you. I'd choose something like the intro to biology, or chemistry

First of all, choose something you're interested in.

I'd choose biology for sure, chemistry, and maybe something else.
It interests me, so having such courses would have been the best idea.
But try to choose something you are interested in, otherwise., it can be boring, and you'll not have that much motivation to study

"Microbiology! I have that course, and it's very interesting.
Sometimes it's hard for me to understand something, but I've never regretted taking such a course. And I have others related to biology, medicine, and it's very informative and interesting ones, but also complicated. But it's good to be a student now because there is a lot of educational information online. For example, I use this service https://assignmentbro.com/us/medical-assignment-help when I have some problems with writing, and it always helps me out. When I have free time, I try to read as many books as possible to improve my knowledge and skills.

Microbiology and lab. [Re: tandem] * 1

I just wanted to say if you are looking to take college classes, and don't mind doing upper level classes then do microbiology and microbiology lab.  I use that information daily when working on propagating my mushrooms.  Hope this helps.

Doing my B.S. in Math, but I decided to take an intro biology course for my science general-education requirements. It's what sprung my interest in mycology!

I have been considering taking more upper level ones and graduate with a minor in biology, but it would be a 3 semester commitment which might be a nice escape from Real Analysis.

Labs are a very fun part too.
