Experimenting with FCs * 1
    #25896241 -

Tried sgfc, HC and hybrids of these but my best result so far is a soda bottle surprisingly. It must just be my conditions which are coldish and lo humidity.
Soda bottle sits on a heated seed propogator base which maintains temp around 20 degrees in the bottle. The bottom has a few inch of soggy vermiculite. Just above this are a row of holes and above this a suspended brf cake. The top of the bottle is cut off and replaced with a coke bottle which has slightly wider circumference so it fits snuggly down over it. This top part also has holes.
The theory is that the heated base drives evaporation and humid air from the verm which rises up drawing in fresh air from lower holes and circulates around the cake. It then exits out the upper holes. From a number of trials four holes above and four below seem to work best with just enough humidity. I have only had to mist and fan twice a day for these results.

That seems like a lot of work. Just get a tub put perlite on the bottom get it wet and put your cakes in there. Mist once in while, if needed.

Haha it doesn't get much easier than lashing something wet into the bottom of a tub!
Unfortunately I've tried it and just get poor results. Yea it's a pita making the soda bottle but a knife and soldering iron soon knocks one up.

Have you tried a 6 quart " shoebox" I made a greenhouse fc " martha tek". Now I am learning shoebox tek to help me learn how to understand the conditions for a passive fruiting chamber. Love your results in that bottle though. Also maybe look into " bottle tek". Good vibes to you and your grow.

Oh nice. There is a dude here somewhere that suspended a whole mono sub in a tub with wires. Actually, imma find that fucker and ask how thats going.

Low ambient humidity is a curse, especially combined with high temps. Even with the minimum FAE that I'm willing to give my tubs, I have to mist every 3 hours, otherwise the surface dries out. The minis in HCs need a mist 3-4 times a day. Close off the tubs to limit moisture loss, and the mycelium screams for more FAE.

A GH is an option that I am pursuing (one design of which has been mentioned - Martha Tek), and supplying some base line humidity. Just don't supply too much humidity, as you need evaporation off of your substrate surface to trigger knotting and pinning.

Nice.

I like this idea. Confused on the "4 hole thing" thou.

Awhile back I had an idea to put hooks inside the PF tek cakes so that i could suspend a cake from the lid of the FC to get maximum surface air. Havent done it yet thou.

Thanks dudes best of luck with ur grows too.

Yea catch 22 humidity v fae this setup is where Ive personally managed to get some balance between them

The 4 hole thing logical is where if u look closely on the side on pic there are 4 holes between the verm and cake, spaced equally around the bottle. I also have 4 holes in the cap part not shown in pic. They are roughly quarter inch made with solder iron. I experimented with 8 6 and then 4. 8 and 6 dried cake out too easily. 4 just leaves a slight bit of condensation on the sides so I'm guessing it's good. Haven't tried any less but can't see results being much better.

I'll post pic before harvest. Have currently moved cake out as fruits are hitting the side - only problem with this setup. Am working on a 3l tub next should give more room

Ah i see now.

I might have to experiment with these "humidity sleeves" on my cake. Its about 99% done and will be fruiting alone in my SGFC.

Haha nice one - they shall henceforth be known as humidity sleeves! HS.

Yea if u have a spare cake knocking about sure try one out. Always worth trying something new.

Have you done much more with that sgfc/HC hybrid you were thinking about?
I was initially thinking of using straws to allow air passages through perlite/verm to the holes on the base of the tub. Instead I'm thinking of using plastic egg boxes as each compartment that holds the individual egg is almost 2" apart just like sgfc hole spacings. I can fill each compartment with water/air and make holes in the raised parts in between compartments to allow air flow from the base. I'll need to knock one up to give an idea of what I mean but I think it should give good fae rising up through the bottom. And I can tape off side/top holes to control humidity or just crack the lid as per HC
