Living off grid - The great white North * 1
    #25891657 - 03/23/19 08:29 AM (5 years, 6 days ago)

Outside of Machias ME.

It's a port town and large timber lot with taxes at 80 dollars per year.

I will be heading up to start a camp in October. Starting in an Amish cabin with a stove. Building all other infrastructure.

To the frontier.

What kind of cabins you looking at?

Being someone who has lived most of his life in the suburban and city areas, I am highly drawn to the country as well.

I read that you'll need double the amount of solar panels to achieve the advertised output. So, yes, you can run an air conditioner or microwave on sunny days. Even without storage batteries you'll need a charge-controller:

get a diesel high powered generator and convert it to run of used motor oil and/or cooking oil. go to local oil changes pick up oil 5$ 50gal lol. ** must add you have to filter the oil which requires heating it and filtering it.

Wood gas generators are a BIG deal they have a few fully automated unist online that all you have to do is clean a single filter and add ANY wood based substrate or chunk to burner. just drive around pick up wood chunks on trash pick up day/ offer free tree cutting bam free fuel.

Then more normal solar =)

A standard fur trapper cabin, but with wood stoves.

I am going to splice "two cabins" together with scarf joints and make it larger. I would like a large loft as well.

The video is of a guy doing this very thing without any power tools -- although I will be using chainsaws. A five min time lapse of his build.

The adventurous might design a septic tank to produce Natural Gas

Biotech Biogas Plant

[url=
to convert a small gasoline generator to natural gas[/url]

how to compress biogas into cylinders

I read that mopeds can run on the small cylinder

In Maine this thing might have to be buried 6 feet deep

I've got two I'd like to experiment with. The trick I think is to wrap a central cylinder with discarded polypropylene carpet. The effluent from the john flows down into the central cylinder, the down-pipe ending below the level of the containers overflow pipe. A sawn-off elbow(because of the minimal clearance) prevents gas bubbles going up the inlet Pipe, but still you'd need a small vent pipe between the john and the tank to keep any bubbles that do come up the inlet pipe from entering the dwelling.

There's a name for the septic system that utilizes a central 'colander'. I had one that used a sump pump to distribute the overflow to a drain field elevated above the tank/

So the gas pressure wants to force the water level down so it can escape thru either the inlet or overflow pipe, but instead it's piped to storage bags such as waterbed mattresses I guess.

The carpet covering the central colander is sewn maybe with fishing line onto a 'galvanized-after-welding' hardware cloth that isn't too stiff to roll up enough to fit down thru the tanks fill-cap opening. Sufficient sealing of air crack is critical with two-part epoxy ribbon.

The overflow pipe would need a U-trap to prevent gas escaping easily.

In my experience the best stove is an air-tight wood circulator

Currently @$700 at Lowes (removing the fire brick and grates makes transportation a breeze). I bought the one I have now at a yard sale for $100.

In my experience the best way to pipe the thing is straight out from the back at a slight upward angle thru the wall until it meets a clean-out 'T' which is positioned at a slight downward angle so any rainwater coming down the pipe drains outside rather than continuing on into the stove.

I usually cut a hole thru the wall and cement river rock or something around a large coffee can to form a thimble for the pipe and then use wire wool as caulk. As soon as the pipe reaches outside air it needs to be stainless steel because the cheaper stuff will rust out in a couple of years, so maybe the thimble should be sized accordingly, i.e cut the coffee can and spread the sides.

So you're standing outside your dwelling and removing the cap on the clean out T you shove that round headed chimney brush straight into the wood stove and then you take it out and shove it straight up the pipe (yes you can clean both direction from the clean out T and yeah there's no need for ladders and clambering onto the roof.) Given that my firewood isn't always as dry as I'd like (with creosote build-up as a result) I sometimes have to clean the chimney every couple of weeks.

Stainless steel pipe and T's are expensive but last practically forever. I've got a 12 foot rise on the back of my stove so that's 4 x 3' sections at $100 each + the T (The chimney cap rotted out a couple years ago and I never replaced it) They sell a bracket to set the chimney on but I just ran it up a sturdy angle iron wired to the drip-edge of the roof. I hung a pulley on the angle iron and used that to raise pipe into position.

*********************************************

You're going to need the equivalent of a 200 sq' foot wood shed that will accommodate at least 5 cords of firewood. Around here you can give the Ranger station $20 for a permit to gather 5 cords of wood from downed trees.

Consider building a yurt or teepee to live in while building the foundation of your cabin. An 18 foot circle with 20 foot uprights (or longer) should be enough for 5 cords of wood, and one of those with an air-tight wood circulator would, I guess, outperform the comfort of a cabin or camper.

Ha ha, I'm paying $200/month on an acre on an island in Florida:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Beacon+Cir,+Florida+32139/@29.355942,-81.6395957,12z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x88e65a7b45febd7b:0x894d3544e4e40517!8m2!3d29.355942!4d-81.6395957

It's where I hope to put my theories to the test.

You're right. We lived on that island once before and moved north for the hurricane season. I've weathered a couple of hurricanes on the east coast (back when they weren't so fierce) and it's something to see the palm trees bent almost double.

That's amazing that you live on an island.

So cool. Do you take a ferry or bridge?

There's a pricey ferry that runs hardly as many times as you would like it to. Most people have a boat and park their car on the mainland.
