Thansk magash I didn't realise this was your tek but I used it for my first rye grow which can be found in the grow log section. How deep are your containers for those beautiful casings?

You know, they are just the glad ones from the grocery store. The ones they call deep dish. Each one has exactly a quart of substrate in it. I like clear containers wraped in foil cause if I think there may be a contam I can take it out of the foil and look saving myself a bunch of time. So each one of these becomes one of these then one of these and last of all one of these.

>I then put the cup of grain or rye in my case into a quart jar and fill the jar with >water and let it soak for 24 hours.
What should be mentioned: If the rye is relatively fresh, and the temperatures high, the rye will germinate within 24 hours, which is not what you want. Therefore the soaking time should be adjusted according to the freshness of the rye and the outside temperature. If in doubt, one could soak the rye in the fridge.

You know temps here are in the 80s lately. I knew it could germinate but not in 24 hrs. I've never ran into the problem but it's good to know. Thanks for the info.

Howdy, I was wodering about the yeild differences between this tek and using a popcorn to 50/50+ casing tek. This one seems so much easier that if its around the same i might as well switch to this. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

What size do you make the tyvek inserts. I know u put them between the metal lid and the band, after u put the holes in the lid, but how big do YOU make the inserts.
Also, how many rye berries would be logical to order. 5 pounds worth? I bought 12 1qt mason jars, and i plan on using 4 or 6 at a time.

I usually use a pint jar for about those size casings...... Do you get an increase in flushes, yields, by using more substrate??
The reason I use pints is because quarts are 1 inch too tall for my goddamn pressure cooker.
Also what setting do you "simmer" on guys? Med, low, etc? Because I heard if you cook your grains too high that you will get starches and have a ton of contams........ And do you need to worry about what temp you start the PC on with grains? Because I usually start my PC out on med-high until it goes and then put it down to 2-3 (low) for 40-50 mins.......
I have been doing pf tek type pint jars now because I have no idea about the grain thing and sterilizing it at exactly 160-180 degrees seems difficult and error prone to me? Or is that just straw?
Will someone help me lol?

thats straw. You sterilize grain the same way as pf jars if you're using a pressure cooker. 90 mins at 15 psi. I simmered my grain on low medium low.

I was wondering if you could just dump all the jars into one big terranium instead of using one tupperware container for each quart jar. The only drawback i can think of is if you get a contam you might have to trash the whole thing? Any thoughts would be great.

Would you see any other downfalls to using this method??

I want to try this rye tek but with a couple minor differences. First of all i would like to use pint jars for a smaller scale....would this be a problem?? Then you say to use 1 cup per 1 quart...of course i would just lower that measurement for pint jars. How long do you let the rye drain after simmering??? Do you soak one cup at time as far as....say take one cup of berries...stick it in the jar and soak it....then do as many cups to equal the amount you will need to fill the pint jars. Basically you are preparing each jar individually??Also i use filter disks...would any water be getting into my jars if i use the same band and lid method you described? Usually with PF tek i put a disk on then the lid upside down and pressure cook them...when i put the spores in i poke threw the first filter the put another on top and just use a plastic lid with a hole in it over the whole thing? Will this modified version work or am i setting myself up for failure???

No

Actually I just rinse it off and jar it up

Possiably. Two disks may be to low a airflow but I have never tried it.
For wbs simmer for 30 min

Like I said. With rye I just rinse it off and start putting it in the jars. 5 minutes if someone calls on the phone. WBS I just waited about 10 minutes
