Fidelity Index Funds
    #25885234 - 03/20/19 07:52 AM (5 years, 10 days ago)

I see that Fidelity is now offering index funds with significantly lower expense ratios than Vanguard (I know when you're talking about something that low maybe significantly lower is misleading), and no minimum investment compared to Vanguard's $3000. Why are they doing this? They can't be making much money. Is it just to get people in the door like Walmart selling milk for a dollar?

It's the trend of the industry.

Index funds are pretty indistinguishable, but some of the specialized funds have much higher expense ratios. They also hope to attract the people with significant assets so they can push them into more aggressive actively managed funds. Picking a broker is like picking a bank, a lawyer or accountant, you aren't going to be switching every couple months or years to save a few dollars. You really only switch if you are extremely unhappy with what you currently have.

I would also think that having a huge number of assets under management allows you to make markets for things as they rebalance.

Yes.

John Bogle at Vanguard invented and popularized the index fund to an extent that Vanguard moved past Fidelity as #1 in the mutual fund industry. Others were forced to lower their expense ratios to the .2% standard that Vanguard established. I never expected Fidelity to significantly undercut that rate.

I think you hit the nail on head about getting people into their actively managed funds, where Fidelity charges much more than Vanguard. And Fidelity's no minimum balance to open a fund is very attractive to new investors while Vanguard holds firm at 3K to keep costs down.
