Oats are finicky, or is it just me.
    #25885922 - 03/20/19 02:34 PM (5 years, 28 days ago)

Out of six 5qt bags I've lost 4 due to trich at the bottom of every bag, I've lost about four 1qt jars due to trich at the bottom of each jar. Now I've never had this problem with Popcorn, WBS even BRF. I boil them for about 30 mins, stirring constantly, making sure the oats at the bottom are mixed with the ones at the top. After I pull the spoon-ula out of the oats to check consistency of burst oats, I like to see about 2-3 per spoon-ula. The I drain, dry and pack up for PC. I PC for 16psi @90mins
Should I change something, is it the oats, my prep, my PC cycle, wtf... I'm not getting the inconsistency as to why I keep getting fucking trich at the bottom of my shit!

I probably have no business even trying to help since I'm so new but I've been reading those teks specifically a ton lately.

So just to double check (and you probably already do this) do you vent for 10 minutes after your air vent / cover lock engages and only then place the pressure regulator on the vent pipe?

Oats are pretty easy, try upping your PC cycle to 2hr and if that doesn't work then I'd look at your spawn. I do 2.5 hrs at 15psi and rarely get contaminated jars.

Yes sir, I vent for 10 mins, forgot to include that above.
The spawn is good, it ALWAYS starts where there is no mycellium.
Take this jar for example, it started on the bottom, and the myc was all on top from agar drops...

I'll try running for longer PC times. I'll start shooting for 2.5hrs. I'm worried it fry or drown my bags if i put too much or too little water. I usually go for about 2.5-3qts of water and it leaves about .5" after a 90min cycle.

Edit- did 15 qts yesterday I'll see if they go bad in the next week while I wait for my myc to grow.

Same here on PC time 2 to 2.25 he's, after venting. But I also allow my oats to cook for 45 mins. I found 30 wasn't long enough, I had jars not take off.

45 min on a rolling boil and then dry overnight spread out on screens. Load jars, PC for 2/2.25 hrs. Leave till next morning, fire FH and innoc. Just my routine.

Good luck! Oats are stupid cheap and I've had success with them.

They are STUPID cheap, $18 for a 50lb bag, $$$ fuck yes... also I'll give boiling longer a try also, how do your oats look after that long, how many burst or swell to your liking?

Are they oats for racehorses or regular oats?
Also if you find you're losing too much water in the pc cycle, you might have your pressure cooker on too high, after I get my pressure cooker vented and weighted. I drop my stove temp down to low to low-mid at which point the water loss over time will remain rather stable and I feel comfortable leaving the PC running for up to 3 hours, though I only pc for 2.

Should be fine.  whole oats is what I look for. Pc'ing less than 2 hrs could be the problem. But if you're losing some jars and not a whole run, i would guess it's more likely a mistake in sterile tek, lid failure, something like that.

Sterilization technique I would take into consideration, if it weren't for the contaminates being at the bottom on every jar or bag. So it isnt necessarily out of the question, but isnt the issue, I do understand it might have some influence, but if the contams were at the top prior to shaking. I've come across one bag with contamination at the top, it was RW and everyone told me it was a bad idea due to the way I conducted the procedure. I've since learned from that and have done things better.
It may be the PC time, I'll boil longer and PC longer on my next run...

didn't read the thread, but it's either not drying them enough, poor sterilization (where I'm leaning. bags take longer than jars) or poor inoculation. how are you noccing the bags?

I had a regular bag of whole oats like that and I ran literally a 100% contam rate, I switched to whole oats for horses(triple cleaned) and ran about a 2% contam rate with the same tek. Some spawn is loaded with endospores and ime sometimes it's better to switch than to try and hold on.

i guess I won't help then.. keep thinking poor sterilization can't appear at the bottom of your bags. :peace:

Trypt makes a good point there. Just cause the contam was on the bottom, doesn't necessarily mean you didn't accidentally contaminate it. It's still a plausible explanation i think. Put it on the back burner incase you still see issues after adjusting your sterile time.

I do 90 mins at 16-17. No jars yet out of a couple hundred that didn't become clean spawn.

I do 2-2.5 hours for oats in quart jars. If I was using bags with 5 quarts I'd probably push that to 3 hour sterilization time.

Oats also retain a lot of moisture. I let mine dry after the simmer in strainers for 5-10 hours before I load it into jars. They might even seem like they're too dry but if you did a long enough simmer/boil they are probably good.

If you still end up having a ton of issues with oats might be worth trying your hand at a different grain (wheat is my favourite and cheap like oats from feed stores)
