Okay im having a heated debate with some jackass who thinks bruising leads to contams, because the mycelium is now hurt and needs to heal itself. He also thinks a 100% healthy cake can contam before first flush from handling without gloves, or misting with undistilled water. Ive done lots of searching on here over the last day looking for a good thread to explain these things, all i can find is just people asking "bruising or contams". Can anyone clear this up?
Well bruising can be caused by lots of things, but usually its from spraying or being too dry..so those things aren't causing any real damage, its just chemical reactions
Handling without gloves does have the potential for increasing the risk of infection, depending where your hands have been..healthy mycelium is good at defending against spores floating around in the air, but if you;re literally rubbing them on the surface, its no a great plan..gloves are a good precaution, same as if you went to the doctors, you'd expect them to wear gloves if they were dressing a wound..even though you have an immune system
Tap water is safe to drink, and therefore safe for mycelium, I wouldn't recommend spraying it with well water or anything that has bacteria present obvs
