Sleep deprivation / insomnia , please help
    #25882142 -

Ok so I have a friend and this is what I know.

She has been having a lot of stress and anxiety.
She has been sleep deprived for a long time, went to the doc, they said she was suffering from extreme sleep deprivation.

She hasn't been able to eat recently. She hasn't had an appetite, and has been throwing up often but recently may be feeling better.

So she's having some sort of issue with that.

And she literally has been unable to sleep. And when she does she can't reach rem sleep, doesn't feel rejuvenated.

Shes also dealing with some past traumas she is trying to recover and heal from.

So lots of stress, anxiety, sleep deprivation, issues eating/throwing up, and healing from old wounds.

She has been to the doctor and they're trying to figure stuff out. She tried melatonin for the sleep. She's been prescribed anxiety medication and some other things which she is weary to take due to negative effects etc.

Anyone ever see or deal with something like this ?

On top of it all she recently had an lsd trip which was a bit difficult, brought up some part traumas, and she was doong research and mentioned to me she has schizophrenia in thr family and is a bit worried she had a sort of psychotic break and possibly triggered schizophrenic symtpoms to emerge

I feel really bad because I didn't really know much of this was going on with her, she wanted to take some lsd, and I was all for it. I got paranoid and made it worse by making accusations against her having to do with trust issues which I feel horrible about. We've been talking a lot since which is where I discovered exactly what is and has been going on with her and have been trying to help her get through it and regain composure the best I can.

So again, any info or help with course of action is appreciated.

She also quit smoking weed completely recently.

The main issue is inability to sleep. Literally not sleeping during the entire night. As well as the eating/throwing up.

I think part of it is she is completely burned out and over exerting herself. stress, worry, anxiety, sleep deprivation, manifesting difficult physical symptoms

Thanks to those who read

See a psychologist and even if she isn't getting sleep I would recommend just laying in bed for the 8 hours and at least getting enough rest. Time will make it better!

Some relaxing herbs might help, either more sedating ones like Valerian root or ones that can help with anxiety like kava. Perhaps a bit of both.

How recently? One of the common effects of "cannabis withdrawal" is insomnia, especially if you were using it to sleep better in the first place. Shouldn't last too long though, but it could make things worse combined with other issues.

Drs gonna suggest the same thing as i will

Benzos at nightime boom no nerves no problemo

They'll prolly give her an ssri or ssra which i only see as dangerous and counter productive

But, id just take some xanax and go to bed, thats just me

I had 50 days of insomnia earlier this year.

Initially I thought it was from a concussion, but I think stress played a huge role as I was switching jobs and starting a brand new intensive grad school program. I was in a dark spot, literally joking to my wife about suicide it was getting so bad. 50 days is a long ass time to not sleep.

I tried it all, and nothing worked. Everything from cannabis to benadryl to running for 2 hours, just could not get more than 2 hours of sleep and on many nights it was 0. I already meditate twice daily and that wasn't helping. I was hesitant to try ambien or a benzo because that'll mess up your ability to sleep even more and there's very little REM sleep.

What worked for me finally was dip. I did a lip of grizzly wintergreen two hours before bed, buzzed my ass off while listening to music and slept great for the first time in 50 days. Only used it that one time and haven't had a problem since.

It's probably unlikely the same would work for her if she even wanted to try it, but it definitely did something for me and probably saved my academic career.
I think I was just dealing with a type of stress that for whatever reason nicotine hit a reset button on.

I know I would've tried anything at that point, so figured I'd mention it.

Otherwise I'd just recommend cutting all substances, getting any psychological help possible, doing whatever she can to relieve stress and just knowing that even though she probably feels broken, time will heal it.

My ex used to smoke tobacco right before bed, always seemed weird to me since tobacco is pretty stimulating. But it can help with anxiety too, especially once you're addicted then it may be extra hard to sleep without it :strokebeard:

Kratom has always made me sleep like a baby, as long as I take it a few hours before bed so the stimulating effects wear off.

Cannabis edibles can also knock people right out, I take tincture sometimes for the sedating effects.

Kratom was next on my list of things to try. Definitely worth a shot.

It can do wonders as it's used responsibly, IE avoiding higher doses unless you really need them for pain or to taper off harder substances.

Definitely can be very sedating/relaxing. Kratom also causes intense dreams for some people which is interesting.

Thank you guys, truly appreciate your replies 🙏

Feevers, you don't recommend Xanax for sleep? This was something she considered just to try and get any sleep if possible.

She also mentioned ans believes waiting weed is impacting her sleep. She literally just quit these last few days. Smoked some recently and it seemed to put her in this manic depressive state so she swore off it, something I also recommend.

Sounding like maybe try kratom first or even the tobacco thing...?

I would wait a while before I started trying drugs to fall asleep and become dependent on drugs just for sleep. That's a slippery slope. I mean, what's the game plan there? Just take xanax for the rest of your life?

No I think her plan was more take it to hopefully get some sleep once

I agree with you loph

It was something she mentioned and considered and since she hasn't been getting any sleep i thought maybe it was a good idea so she could at least get SOME sleep

Think it's best to tough it out for a few days and see if things correct on their own ?

She's taking a break from work for at least a week or two, quit her second job, and taking a break from school.

I think she needs it

Yeah, taking it every once in a while is fine. That just isn't something I would want to get dependent on. I might even try ambien before benzo's.

It's hard to say what someone over the internet needs. To me it kind of sounds like she needs to either talk to someone or go on a vacation or something to release stress. The Trauma is just going to take time and effort to get over.

OP, an eerily similar thing happened to me last Spring//Summer, I almost feel as if it were written about me (right down to my boyfriend not trusting me after the experience with LSD).

I took a moderate dose of acid in March 2018 while in my final, most busy semester of college, so I was massively stressed. Slipped into a manic episode without noticing (not entirely due to the acid, as I have preexisting mental issues, but it definitely exacerbated things), and by late June//early July, I wasn't sleeping (averaging maybe 1-3 hours a day), wasn't eating (had gone from 120 lbs to 99), and was an absolute nervous wreck//experiencing psychosis.

If she's having debillitating issues with anxiety/other mental ailments, I honestly reccomend she listen to the doctor's advice regarding medication. It's saved my life and there is nothing wrong with giving your brain the push it needs to function properly. I hope she gets her sleep figured out, too. :frown:

Lots of love and warmth to her!

Take Ambien by prescription and only use it on rare occasions when she absolutely needs sleep. Make sure she hides her car keys and fully shuts off her computer/phone to prevent Ambien incidents which can sometimes happen.

I would not recommend kratom to her; in particular if she has never heard of it. With the symptoms you describe I would worry that she would find comfort with it-- perhaps far too much  comfort. I have seen this happen with someone I know that has very similar difficulties. Now she has a much bigger difficulty on top of all the others...

Good luck to your friend. As someone that has struggled with insomnia, I can sure see the toll that it takes on people.

So sorry to hear about this OP. I have been suffering from chronic insomnia for years now. (PTSD as well.)

Because of my documented history with opioids, I am unable to find a doctor who will prescribe a medication that is strong enough to work for me, despite the fact that I stopped using opioids years ago.

I have tried tons of uncontrolled sleep meds (usually shitty anti psychotics that have off label uses for sleep, and nasty side effects)

I have been labeled and now it is very hard to legally get the help that I need. My PTSD remains untreated as well.

So I use unprescribed benzodiazepines (when I can get them) and drink.

This insomnia has made it very difficult to hold down a job for very long. Not to mention the damage that alcohol is doing to my body. I always fizzle out due to sleep deprivation and mental breakdown.

I hope that your friend gets help. Please let her know that she is not alone in this. I absolutely feel that pain, and I wish you guys all the best.

If you need to talk to someone, please feel free to :pm: me.

My GF sometimes has a mild form of this. Shes gets wound up and stressed out then cant sleep or doesnt sleep as much.

Sounds like she needs to become stress free. You cant sleep if youre completely anxious and stressed. She needs some kind of stress/anxiety therapy such as cognitive therapy: https://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-cognitive-therapy.htm

If u read up on cognitive therapy, u may be able to do it at home. Its probably pretty expensive thru a psychologist, but if she can afford it, do it.

I find that a day of rigorous physical exercise helps me sleep. Also seems to deal with anxiety as well. So if she can do some intense exercising during the day, that will help.

She could also be a real light sleeper, so having a quiet, cool room to sleep in is essential as well.

Not being able to sleep is actually a huge problem in developed countries. If I have something important going on the next day I barely fucking sleep. Doctors always think your full of shit too. The worst part is when you haven’t gotten good quality sleep your dreams can blend into reality. I used unisom religiously. Probably the strongest OTC sleep aide but i stopped all that shit. Doc gave me some trash shit that I threw out because the side effects were insane.

I like to sleep with something playing in the background. Keeps my mind from wandering and thinking trivial shit

Great idea!

Maybe try using a white noise machine or put on some gentle psy-dub/psybient or even classical piano before going to sleep. Might help relieve stress.

I hope it works for her, but music, or any media only makes it harder for me to sleep. Benzodiazepines, alcohol, or preferably a little of both, a 60 degree room, and soft fuzzy blankets are all that helps me.

Besides strong indica concentrates, which I cannot afford on a regular basis.

Something that I do when I'm desperate for sleep, I lower my oxygen levels by shallow breathing. Eventually I feel my heart slow to a trickle beat, my lips to numb and I go completely limp. After some time, I asphyxiate myself and go unconscious, manual breathing until your cns forces an override by shutting off the frontal lobe.

Basically try to die.

Relaxing/mellow instrumental music can help me sleep sometimes but mainly when there's something noisy keeping me awake, otherwise it can still be distracting for sure.

For anyone with anxiety I recommend the drug that saved my life: Buspar. It only works for some people, but for the people it does work for, it's fantastic.

Zero side effects in everyone I've seen try it (including myself) and it's not a benzo that will actually make the problem worse by becoming addicted to it.

I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Buspar, coupled with cognitive behavioral therapy, took me from considering suicide just to escape the hellscape my mind had become, to being able to live a normal life, and even be happy most of the time.

Your experiences may vary, but you can't really go wrong with trying it. For most everyone I know it worked within a day or so of trying.

I tried buspar and it felt like super benadryl. Kind of put me in a weird fog but I never tried it and was expecting a lot more. Definitely not recreational and that’s why a lot of docs readily prescribe it. Honestly all drugs fucking suck for sleep. Benzos give u fake sleep. Antihistamines make your allergies rebound. Opioids are great for sleep but super addicting. Weed wins hands down.

Yeah Buspar isn't for sleep, nor does it really have recreational value, although when I first took it, the cessation of anxiety made me feel like I was high. I'd forgotten what "feeling ok" felt like.
