Will liquid myc injected into a dung/straw bed colonize?
    #2575522 - 04/18/04 11:00 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I went to the depot a few weeks ago and got lots of composted manure for my garden and for shrooms. I have 4x 40lb bags left to have fun with and experiment . I Just made 400ml of B+ liquid karo/honey myc today. Im waiting on my jars to colonize which would be about 1-2 weeks beofore i make my first real bed. But in the mean time since the liquid myc should be ready in a few days... I was wondering what are the chances of colonization if i make a small test bed and injected liquid myc all in it? And dont forget to vote!
Can you start a bed with liquid myc?
You may choose only one
yes
no
Mabey if your lucky

give it a try. im thinking of doing this but with more liquid mycelium. it should work i wouldnt bother injecting to be honest just mix it through the poo. Since its pasteurized and not sterilized injecting would take longer and not help.

Later NoG

when you spawn a substrate, you optimally want a 1:10 ratio, 1:5 ratio decreases colonization time(and increases yield, theoretically). anyway... liquid cultures would not contain a substantial enough amount of mycelium to account for anything close to the 10% of the spawn required for manure trays. there would not be enough mycelium to completely run through the entire substrate in the 2 week window of opportunity pasturization gives you. (adding a lime pH buffer will maximize that window). don't waste time and effort. go through the extra step of innoculating grain spawn and later transfering to dung/straw or dung/coarsely ground coconut bark. manure alone is too dense a substrate and doesn't provide air-pockets to breath and transfer water to the mycelium as easily as with a less dense substrate. see also: substrate matrix

Um theres no 2 week window for pasturization. I have a casing in my room with unpasturized composted manure/straw that i spawned using a fully colonized yeast contamed jar. Im just waiting on the pinset now.

If you read my first post i have time to have fun and experiment, that is what this hobby is. I do have jars of grain that were already innoculated 3 days ago but they wont be done for another 1-2 weeks, the liquid myc will be done in 3 days. I know it will probaly take long if at all to colonize and fruit, but im in no rush because i have that casing and some rez ones im making to supply me for now.

Im making a good substrate matrix, hence the title "Will liquid myc injected into a dung/straw bed colonize?" Im using dung/straw. Straight manure does work as in the wild and ive seen a casing of straight dung not long ago here. But you are correct that having somehting like hay mixed in to get air pockets is good.

Do it outdoors, and i think you will have a better chance. Ive read some outdoor teks that actually suggest using spores, so i figure honey water would work.
