    #25876451 - 03/15/19 05:22 PM (5 years, 14 days ago)

Found these black walnut looking specimens and wondered wtf kinda black magic was going on... they are very spongey and have web like stems...
Found in southern California... All information is appreciated...supposedly you can eat these if you cook them first...

I think it's Helvella lacunosa.
In the future try to get pics in the habitat where they are found.

yes I think you are correct... I saw some pictures on google that mislabeled these as morels, but the web like stems are indeed helvellaceae ...thanks

Could be if he found it in Europe.  In Southern California, Helvella dryophila is super common right now, I bet it was under Quercus agrifolia.  They are good edibles, I ate some I found in LA a couple weeks ago.

I am giving a free talk in LA in a couple days...http://lamushrooms.org/calendar.html

Hey Alan, I found something similar just recently but near some conifers and ID it as Helvella vespertina. (I'm located up in the Humboldt area)

But I tossed them seeing warnings about them in regards to their edibility. But I do know where a decent amount are growing right now. Am I just being paranoid, or should I give these a try?

Nothing about this looks appetizing, it's not something I would have considered eating, but I trust Alan, if he says it's good,  I'd try it.

I don't know much of that Sp. But where I live I pick and consume a similar mushroom that is considered toxic. It's in the gyromitra, looks quite similar. I prefer them to morels.

I am in no way telling you to eat those, that would be wreckless since I know nothing about that mushroom. I was just noting the similarity.
