implimenting a round HEPA filter
    #2587545 - 04/21/04 06:09 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

anyone have any ideas about implimenting a round HEPA filter and a squirrel cage blower for a laminar flow hood ?

my idea is to plug the bottom of the filter, then making a baffle on the top of the filter. putting the sucking side of the blower on top of the baffle (seal of weatherstripping on the sealed and baffled side)

on the output side using a round semi rigid ducting to a heating vent used for funaces to spout out the air (work area)

anyone think this would work

feedback extrodinarily appreciated

thanx in advance

The blower won?t peforem equaly well if you use it to suck the air through, instead of pushing it through.

If the blower is rather on the weak side, I would do something similar to this:

im not sure about the specs of the blower,

all i know its from a co2 laser cooling fan assembly by a company called jds uniphase (cant get any specs from them either)

the blower wheel is about 4 inches in diameter

and the motor is rated at 1/8hp at 240v 9 amps and continous duty

i can immagine its at least 465 cfm

my reasoning for using a round filter is i have acess to a few for low to no cost at all, i also have no wood working tools , should i chunk up and get a filter from the net some mdf board and a handsaw?

yeah don't use it to suck. fume hoods aren't as efficent.  I am the same situation as you right now... I am looking to either built my next flowhood or buy it...

use the tek anno posted, if you want to make your blower the most efficent.

peace

im not set on the idea of sucking thru the filter, just using a round filter and a blower for a flowhood

sorry for the miscommunication

This plan is destined for disapointment.

If your trying to save money buy a clear rubbermaid tote and cut two round holes for your hands. A glovebox for under $10 and it works.

so its even a dumb idea to push air through a round filter?

If I sounded condescending I apologize.

To keep your work area free of contaminates you need either a laminar flow of air or a still air environment. If the air is turbulent, the air currents will draw contaminant laden air into your work area that did not go through your filter. Your air source must be flat to give a laminar flow.

This is how laminar flow works:

This perspective is looking at the flowhood from the side, so the bottom beneath the arrows is the work area. The red dots are contaminant spores. A whole mess of interacting forces are blowing them in every which direction. Gravity, atmospheric pressure or your cat breathing in the other room are just a few of many.

The contaminate spores have entered the airstream but are prevented from entering the work area.

If there is a strong enough air current in the room it can break the laminar flow. Personally, I feel more secure in a horizontal laminar flowhood than a vertical one like shown above. I do not have the freedom to operate my flowhood in a low traffic area. I believe that the horizontal hood gives me more protection from air currents opposing the flow out of my filter. This protection comes at the cost of a semi enclosed work area and vertical space. Here is what mine looks like:

I left those grain jars open in the flow for 36 hours, closed them up and incubated them. I tossed them at a month w/ no contams.

If that is your flowhood... I like it.  That's it...

Peace - @cro  :stoned:

I think the plexiglass sheilding helps quite a bit. I haven't made my hood yet, but when I do it will have plexi sheilding so that the laminar flow exits the hood outside of the work area.

Basically it will be a positive pressure work area. The pressure comes from sterile air, so the work area remains sterile.

I don't know if this makes sense to you, it does to me.

BTW...how much did it cost you to make that HEPA blow hood?

What do you call it?

Did you test it for laminar flow?

how much did it cost.... hmmmm

There is a guy on eBay, machinedproducts is his name.  He had (2) 24"x12" filters up for grabs, and I won them YAY!

Well, his warehouse is only hours away from me, so I showed up myself because I knew the filters would be pricey to ship (heavy).  He asks me what I want them for, I tell him I am an amateur edible mushroom grower and that I need a sterile work area.  SO he leads me outside to some circuitry making sytem.  It was made to cool LCDs or something.  He said it was military
But the LCDs need to dry sterile and the metal part of my flowhood was operating above the conveyor on this LCD dryer thingy.

I ended up taking home (2) charcoal filters 24"x12", the (2) HEPA filters I won on eBay, and this thing with fan and HEPA filter all for $40.

You shoulda seen how pissed I was at the lumbar yard when I found out I'd have to pay $30 a sheet for plywood.

it uses the blower off of a holmes aircleaner that fires air below the filter , thru a baffle in the box that let the air move forward instead of out the very top of the box

the filter material is there just to keep things neat

the real prefilter is wrapped around the filter

my goal is to make something similar with a squirrel cage blower with more work area, since this worked so well

......out of ideas
