Bush doof season is coming! * 6

For those of you who don't know what a bush doof is, it's basically a small psytrance festival held in the middle of nowhere in Australia. Sometime in the 90's some bloke moaned in the paper in the paper about the "doof doof" and it stuck. The bush doof moniker was created.

Festivals are something different, there's 1000's of people and it's all fucked up with security guards wandering around to make sure you act in a manner that is not contrary to the law, quite often police are prevalent as well. Good events if you're into that sort of thing, I guess.

A bush doof on the other hand is much smaller, maybe 200-300 people, is set up on private property and I have never seen an owner allow the police entrance even if they have rocked up and asked to be let in. By the time a 3 or 4 day doof is over you pretty much know everyone at the whole party, and if you go to a few doofs you will know plenty of people when it starts. :awesome:

There's no rules, there's no fighting, there's no litter and stuff just dumped everywhere... most people are getting around in thongs or bare feet even. The bass never stops. It goes 24 hours a day for the duration of the event. You live eat sleep and breathe the bass. There's no way to escape it. Half of the people are tripping on acid and the other half are tripping on something else. It's pretty frothy around the edges. And you better like psytrance, because that is the name of the game. You'll see all ages at these do's as well, from babies to pensioners. It's really all inclusive. It's for the people who love this subculture and their families.

Fortunately in my part of Aus it pisses rain for about half of the year so it's no good for doofs, but as the dry and the cool comes around the word gets out and all the crews have been getting ready to hold spectacular events for us local maniacs again. I just got the first heads up yesterday about one in May, the first month of the dry season, and bought my tickets. It's always good to buy tickets beforehand so the organisers have plenty of cash to get nice stuff for the party. Gate entrances don't really help much as the parties aren't run for profit, they are run in the name of the doof!

Could hardly sleep last night, thinking about doofing... ah, the fun to be had.

here's the one in May I was talking about.

For obvious reasons it doesn't say "freaking wild psy party" on the event page. If you know what it is, you know what it is.

This one does food as well, so you can pay upfront at the start and just rock up at the kitchen with your bowl and fork when you're hungry, all weekend. Takes all the pain out of this sort of camping if you don't have the gear or just too slack or mashed up to feed yourself.

Yeah they just run in the winter, too wet and hot in the summer. No good for big sound systems even if the people would be keen.

In America, they call 'em Outdoor Raves or Guerrila Raves. Theres also Full Moon Psytrance parties or Desert Psytrance parties but the name Doof really hits me in the dinger!

Ive been to about 4 American Guerrila Raves. I love em. They are awesome and i miss them a ton. Cant wait to find another just gotta know the right people to get in the loop! Give me the Loop!

The style tends to be a progression over an event, starting with psy beats and chill psy on the first night and then moving up in tempo the whole of the next day until the headline act at midnight. Then dark and forest psy in the early hours. Then back to prog sort of stuff the next day. By then everyone is pretty toasted. Longer events tend to have a few days of live music and workshops and stuff, then end with a 2-3 day solid doof.

Looks like fun but n Brazil. :awesome:

Activists in general suck balls... vegan activists are like Jehovah's Witnesses after a major meth binge.  :crankey:

I like to get up them about their general ignorance of the actual environment rather bitching about how some of our food might feel before we eat it.

My wife is vegan, I've got no issues with people who want to make their own choices according to their own moral beliefs. Good for you, my wife, and anyone who has the courage of their convictions.

I just don't like hypocrisy and idealogical narratives that ignore inconsistencies, whilst assuming a faux moral high ground and trying to manipulate me.

Those people need some more doofing in their lives. Lots of hugs and open conversation with strangers, help them realise that they really aren't that different to anyone else.  :heart:

My ex wife is vegetarian so I kind of was for 6 years, just because it was easier than cooking 2 separate things, but  vegetarian bacon is fucking shite lol

Just remembered I'd posted this pic from a bush doof a few years back



That was the last day... all a bit sloppy and many people just chilling at that stage in the undercover behind where the photo was taken from.

Poor Funktion-One's covered in mud. :sad:  It started pissing rain in the middle of the night but the weather was still pretty warm. There was some banging Israeli dj's on and no one moved for cover. Just a throbbing mass of tripping people stomping in the rain in the jungle. Wicked night.  :awesome:

In Denver. I have thought about moving to Oregon and starting a farm with my girlfriend. There are definitely underground events here. I have helped out with a few in my day involving renegade sound systems.

I mainly stick to burner events and the occasional show at our local bass music venue.

I have been wanting to go to a moontribe party for a long time.

I guess you could. Fresh leaves are definitely more potent than long ago dried though.
I tip out about 1/3 of the bottle of vodka then fill it up with leaves.

Ate all the drugs and danced and talked shit for two days. Difficult to even sit in my chair right now. Time keeps skipping. Amazed that I made it home whole and uninjured. In true doofing style it pissed rain for most of the party. Crazy people, crazy music, crazy. I was ready to do a third night as well but my friend had had enough and wanted to leave. I don't know how it became the middle of the night now, don't remember it getting dark. Bass is still ringing in my brain.

Tried to find some pictures on my phone worth sharing, they are mostly all blurry or me and random people smiling. Not really good forum fodder.

I have a fake Facebook account and I get invited to the doofs. I don't know how else to find out about them. If you want tagging too GoldenHead shoot me your FB profile and I'll add you as invited as they come up. Once you get onto one or two it starts to link up and you find them all.  :thumbup:

Went to Stevos zoo years ago... Was alright. Felt a bit like a tourist trap to be honest. Then again I've travelled a lot over here and had seen pretty much everything there in the wild.

I'd love to know if they happen in Oregon. Ive heard rumors of Full Moon Psy-Trance Parties but Ive never been to one and dont know how to get into The Psy Crew. :shrug: I used to get my rogue rave news from nwtekno.org but they got closed down :sad:

I'll let you know as things draw closer - though your more reliable bet would be to go to some of the free soul tribe sunday events @ Sessions in town and meet some of the promoter peoples, who will then throw you on their semi-private invite lists... as they kinda don't want people inviting anyone aside from what's on their list so they can keep it tight.

There's a really great looking dealio happening in cle elum in 2 days but I don't think it's in my cards :sad:

Usually mid-june/july is audiblebicyleday's dealio up around Stevenson, wa

Next, after that is a yet to be finalized more local Oregon thang july 5th-7th - I think they're doing it w/ like way darker psy than normal so it should be interesting.

There are for sure things like that happening out in Colo. I don't live out there so I'm not within the circles or scenes out there but I know little gatherings & shin digs like that do happen out there....

...I don't live in Colo, I'm over in Cali, but these sorts of things happen all over the western US....3 to 4 day gatherings of 1000 people or less somewhere out in nature/private property.


Around my area/Cali, pretty much every single weekend from April until September there is something like this going down somewhere out in the mountains/forests or out in the deserts.

There are lots of "underground" & smaller/off the mainstream radar things happening out there.

And there are also things like "regional burns" happening across the US, small regional gatherings/shin digs put together by local burners....kinda like a mini-local burning man.

Back when I lived in Colorado a buddy of mine threw a yearly rave (free) in a remote spot in the national forests. You can congregate up to 75 people groups in national forests without issue. The first year was like 50 people, the next year after that around 150+ people ended up showing up so they needed to create a second camp / stage setup. The next year after that like 300 people showed up so they set up a third stage area as people rolled in to separate camps. They'd literally have people play music from 6 to 6 each year. Obviously the whole thing was one event and people went back and forth between camps, but as long as at a quick glance there weren't more than ~75 people in an area there were no issues.

Every time the forest rangers would roll up to check out what was going on and they wouldn't really bother us. They would just remind us that we could not exceed 75 people per camp, but music and setting up a stage was perfectly fine. Each time we had a group of people do some clean up (balloons from nitrous were a big one) and I think we all did a really good job of cleaning up after everything.

Aside from that, I'd been to 3 or 4 free gatherings like that that were all psytrance, also largely in national forests with a similar premise. So stuff like that is definitely out there, just a matter of finding it.

The expansion definitely raises some... issues :rofl: - the last mountain gathering we had - its 9th yearly iteration or so -  people started to get a little too comfortable with bringing their family, younger teens and whatnot - and some 13 year old kid ended up getting his hands on some acid - ran down the mountain (probably about 3000-4000ft down and ended up lost for like 15 hours with everyone at the festival half-assuming he slipped and broke a leg or something somewhere off in the forest - he eventually made it to the road and got picked up by the police like, the next day - but people were beginning to consider canceling the whole event and bringing in a rescue crew :rolleyes:

That stereotypical single mom that brings her 3 feral hippie kids - always a fun handful. :lol:

I juet recently found out about Fyre Festival, a regional Burning-man like mini festival. I love it. Its one of my favorites for sure. :yesnod:
