Question about Papaver Somniferum Seedlings
    #25872135 -

Hoping I put this in the correct subcategory.

So, my question is in regards to sprouts. I have had a bitch of a time with them but it is finally the beginning of spring and time to try again. I can get the bastards to sprout using the fridge trick (where I live the "cool weather" window for spring is short). My issue is regardless of if I water or do not water them once they hit about a half inch they begin to turn brown. Within 48 hours of them turning brown all are dead. IS the browning due to overwatering? I sprout them inside so maybe it is due to not enough sunlight from the window? If I can get the bastards past the seedling stage that would be awesome as they become hardier afterward.

I have hens and chicks seeds that a friend has been cultivating a little north of me so hopefully, the seeds are a little more acclimatized to my area.

Why don't you sow seeds in their final growing place? Will there still be a period of time where it's cold so they can germinate easily?

I remember reading that poppies dislike being repotted...

I'd say seedlings turning brown happens due to lack of water... not too much...

For me poppies are the easiest plant I know how to grow. Like with any other plants, remember to never let them dry out. Water routinely and always use less fertilizer than recommended is my advice.

poppies are meant to be sown directly in the ground.

I sow mine late february/early march when the daffodils are about to bloom. They can freeze and handle rain/cloudy weather.

I had sown them in those little degradable pots that you just put in the soil. I would dig out a garden and sow in the dirt but uhh, groundhogs like to invade my yard and eat everything. So possibly overwatering? I know not to transplant them cause their taproot does not handle that very well. Thank you for the responses.

Re: Question about Papaver Somniferum Seedlings [Re: IgnorantOne]

papaver somniferum needs to germinate outside. It's a hardy plant, it can withstand sub 0 and snow even in the cotyledon only stage. It needs plenty of sunlight, otherwise it will enlongate and wilt.

It favors planting in situ, and repotting is a very delicate process. IME planting the seeds in a tray and separating the plantlets afterwards will kill a lot of them, but sowing in many miniscule pots and then repotting the plantlets in the ground does work.

The enemy of these plants is snails; if you don't have a seemingly infinite amount of snails in your garden (like I do), it's best to sow directly in the ground.

Guess I will be off to turn some dirt today. My original plan was to take all the biodegradable pots I have them in and plant the pots into buckets once they were past the seedling stage. Do not have snails but I sure as hell have rabbits and groundhogs that eat everything.

These pots - https://www.google.com/search?q=peat+pots&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjjxMPt4JHhAhVR1IMKHfCIAL4Q_AUIDygC&biw=1360&bih=625#imgrc=0L3umwq7v42KEM:

Poppies do not like being started in containers, they should be germinated in the beds or pots they are intended to finish in.

Honestly, those biodegradable pots are nothing but trouble.  They restrict roots, rot easily, and cost too much.  I experimented with them years ago and had nothing but retarded growth compared to plastic pots of the same size.

I would not use them for anything, ever.

If you're having trouble with a springtime "cool weather window"  Try seeding your beds in the fall.  Fall seeded poppies generally get bigger than their spring siblings in climates that don't get too cold in the winter.

Oh really? I thought the seeds could not handle below 0. This past winter it hit -50f for about a week. Normally it is between 20 and -20. Even had icequakes and thunder/lightning snow.

Either that or more gravel/rocks to your next batch. What was your ratio. They like it moist but well drainable.

No ratio. These were buckets that were used last year for veggies. If I do more buckets I will throw an inch or so of gravel at the bottom and maybe mix some river rocks into the soil itself. These were sort of a "toss in some seeds and see what happens" deal.

I will add holes to the bottoms of these buckets to help out in draining and I guess try and keep them covered on rainy days. Maybe get some thick plastic or something

Edit: Seems like it is only certain patches that do this reddish color which is weird. As you can see I have several that are nice and green but they are slightly taller than the red ones. A vast majority of them sprouted due to the rain over the past few days.

Those patches are probably just soil, so its soggy, no sand or gravel so it gets stagnant. Then root rot sets in.
Get a bucket, then fill 50% with dirt, 30% gravel, 20% sand.
Desert mix at stores works well with a light casing of seedling mix ontop.
In your case now, pick the dead, let the strong survive, drill more holes, mix some sand inbetween those sprouts to get better water flow. Might keep them from drying out or rotting any more.

Edit- dont transplant, they'll die.

Re: Question about Papaver Somniferum Seedlings [Re: IgnorantOne]

Those peat planters are for shit.
When growing P.Soms. When they are seedlings is a crucial time for the plant.  The slightest of stress will result in plants that will produce almost nothing.
You can grow in pots , provided they are big enough. I sometimes use the plastic boxes that you see outside of conveniance stores.

An old ice chest works well, I even used an old bathtub on a few occasions.
Plant the seeds straight into the container... I can't stress how important this is.  Keep them moist , but not wet. Once you get past the seedling stage , you pretty much just leave them alone.
Another tip that is vastly important is spacing.  You don't realize this with the seedling because they are so damn small.
If you fail to give them enough space , they will for the most part , all fall over. Then , you end up having to stake and tie them up. Which is exactly what I am going through now. It seems like I always over seed and under thin.  And when you thin , just throw the ones you pull up away... They will just take up valuable space and give you grief in the end.

They will grow in some pretty shitty soil , as long as it's broken up really good. I have never bothered with fertilizer , and would suggest not using any if you have at least somewhat decent soil.
Timing is important too. I don't know what zone you ate in , so I can't tell when is the best time. I live in the Deep South and I sow Oct.-Dec.  If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
Peace.

Thank you for the input. I am a midwesterner right on the Mississippi, I forget the specific zone but it gets waaaay to far below freezing to winter sow. I was about to go out and thin seedlings out later today. I am using big kitty litter containers as pots so I may leave a couple to a pot (like one on either side and one in the middle or some shit like that).

They seem to be chugging along smoothly. Just using them for tea so I have the H&C variety planted. Been told they produce the best alkaloid content for tea due to the multiple pods. Any good plants to grow alongside these bastards? I am moving soon and the new LL is still in love with the Reagan era fuckery. I doubt he could tell the difference in plants but I may still put up some veggies around them. Is p. som an all day sun plant? I want it to thrive but I have only so many east/west positions open that are safe from critters at the new place I am buying.

H&C best for tea?  I dunno about that.
As far as other plants. Romain lettuce looks very similar , other that the flowers and pods.  I have called them flowering lettuce or cabbage,  Peonies... A general rule of thumb when dealing with a  busy bodie: If you can't dazzle this with brilliance , baffle them with bullshit.
As far as critters, I have never had any problem except with slugs. Rabbits and the like seem to steer clear of them.

Update 5/10:

Seems everything is chugging along smoothly. I do have a few clusters whose leaves look diffent than the others but they all looked the same as seedlings. Maybe different variety of poppy? A few buckets are straggling but I think that is due to me sowing them at different times. Question, I get the feeling some of the big ones are going to start fighting for sun, would putting a top layer of perlite, or even just some perlite in general on the soil, aid in light distribution?

Back with more questions. It has been raining daily for about a week or two now, and I have noticed that the leaves are turning yellow on my plants. It starts at the base and then spreads out towards the tips of the leaf. Would this be due to all the rain? Should I get some nutes for them? I had recently moved them to an area that provides an extra hour or so of sunlight, they started doing this afterward. Should I move them back?

Side question: should I thin out a few more or will they be ok for now? Just using the material they provide to make tea so I would like to have an abundant supply of material.

Too many in one container. Those size containers
can hold 1 poppy each.

If your careful you can transplant them. But be
very careful. Papaver usually grow a decent size
taproot so it's best to get them in their perm

Those pots are the final spot sadly. They are pretty deep. I thinned out the youngest ones but I doubt they will transplant well at this age.

Could you elaborate on why what I have is too many?

I have a bunch of seedlings starting up. Should I be thinning them to only one or two per pot? What distance, I know I have read it somewhere, is each plant supposed to be from the other.

Ahh, ok. Thank you for elaborating. So they are being denied nutrients by the others or the roots are fighting for space? I would assume a little of both. Goddamnit lol, I get this far finally and now have to kill even more. Guess we are still technically in spring so I may try to get more started.

Try repotting the others or put them in the ground in the garden if you have one.
They really dont like replant but when small it usually work decently.
Just try be gentle with the roots.
Some may die but i think most will live and grow on.

I replant many poppie seedlings and put them where i want them in the garden, but i do it when they are only 2-3cm tall and at that stage almost all make it.
Big poppies really dont like to be relocated.

Sadly, after reading so much about how transplanting does not work I had just pulled and tossed the smaller ones. I have two other buckets that have sprouts popping up and bought some proper sand soil for another two buckets.

I would replant in the garden but it faces all my neighbors and only gets a few hours of direct sunlight a day.

Sooooo, I have thinned to just one or two plants per pot and still the tips of the oldest leaves turn yellow and the yellowing slowly works its way down the leaf. I am at a loss as to why but I assume it is because we practically had rain every day for the past month. They do not seem much bigger and summer is less than 20 days away...

Correction: They are significantly larger but still no pod or large stem beginning.

Can anyone confirm that it is just overwatering? If I leave them be will they catch up and flower or are they just going to die off as the days begin getting even hotter and longer?

Re: Question about Papaver Somniferum Seedlings [Re: IgnorantOne]
    #26032724 -

My small poppy seedlings that i dug up and put in different parts of the garden have same yellow on the oldest leaf.
Its either because i replanted and disturbed the roots or maybe there was to much fertelizers in the soil for a young plant.
They usually become nice plants anyway.
I dont think overwatering will cause this yellowing on the oldest leafs.
Too strong fertilizers or replanting is more probable cause.

But im no expert on poppies even though i have grown some in the past.
My guess is that they will be fine just give them some more time.
If more leafs turns yellow then you might have a problem that needs to be solved.

Alright, back with a new update.

I think I have my first pod forming! All the ones I tried transplanting are dead and idk if I can get anymore started before it is to late in the year for a bloom.

The chlorosis is still happening and I am starting to lean towards my soil lacking something as the issue. From what I have read poppies are prone to iron deficiencies and ... fuck I forgot the other one.  Either way, I am tempted to put some vermicompost on top and see what happens. I added perlite to increase light reception, soil is draining well. Can poppies get too much sun?

At that size there will be no problems with adding fertilizers.
Just dont put on huge amounts, no plant can take that.
Last year i put my inside grown 10cm tall poppies into fertilized soil and they grew huge.

And yes thats a pod forming.
They will develop several on each plant.

I know it sounds dumb but I am excited for the pods. These plants have given me nothing but trouble over the past two years (my inexperience causing simple mistakes and a lack of decent area to put them). To finally have some progress, even if it doesn't pan out, is awesome.

I gave them worm shit around the base which is like 1.5/0/0 but apparently extremely good for flowering plants. We shall see. I am going to hunt down a fert high in iron and ... goddamnit, why can I not remember the other nutrient they have deficiency issues with...

When i started grow poppies i had a hard time getting them to survive.
I planted them inside and they grew to 2-3cm then died, every time.
I then started to germinate them inside and let them grow to 1-2cm and then put the tray with seedlings outside.
Somehow they didn´t die when i did like that.
So i figured out whats wrong, it´s too warm inside the house or the temperature change is too much for them.
Poppies have no problems with cold but they dont like too hot when seedlings.
When i used an unheated room with window little open the seeds germinated and grew big and strong using just a 30W CFL, the temp was something 13-17 degrees C.
When they were 15cm tall i put them in fertilized ground in the garden.
I had a few die from the replant but most did make it.
I tried to be as gentle i could with the roots and sometimes just put the whole root and soil clump from inside the pot into the ground.
In some pots there were several seedlings and i had to carefully separate the soil into several parts with one seedling in each.
Some smaller was in jiffy peat bricks that i just put in the ground.
If one is very gentle they can be relocated if still pretty young, be very careful with roots.
Some might die but for me the majority did make it and grew well.
This year i just threw seeds around the garden where i wanted them.
They are way smaller than last years poppies that i started inside so it´s clearly an advantage to start them inside.

Finally found the article covering what may be my issue. Though I would share it with you guys in case you want to do some light reading lol.

"Poppies are low to moderate feeders in the landscape, providing high fertility levels can cause them to appear lush and leafy and may delay flowering. An application of a balanced controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) such as 10-10-10 or 14-14-14 with a 3-4 month formulation applied to the bed at planting will keep the plants well fed, depending on the amount of irrigation required and the average daily temperature. In areas of high irrigation and high temperatures it may be better to use a formulation with a slower release rate since higher temperatures will cause the fertilizer to be released quickly. Fertilizers that are not CRF are not recommended since the fertilizer will be leached out of the root zone long before the crop needs the nutrients.

Poppies are also prone to both magnesium and iron deficiencies, both of which appear as interveinal chlorosis. To overcome these deficiencies, it may be necessary to drench with magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) or iron chelate.".

What I am dealing with is definitely Interveinal Chlorosis. The main "vein" within the leaf stays green while the tip turns yellow and spreads down the leaf slowly.

The source actually has a decent amount of information.

Should the pods be turning purple at all? Because all of mine are turning purple rather quickly it seems.

Best info I have found is this

Persians and H&C oh we must not forget the popular tasmanian strain, regardless of the threes strain each are said to be ideal choices.

All of the three prioly mentiones strains of pods are small to large in its overall size. Its often that I hear small/medium pods to be considered more potent. Also the purple colored pods are said by bystanderds to be a good sign for higher potency in the pod.

This seems to have turned into a bit of a grow log lol. Wanted to give a second to last update. One flowered this morning and the petals will have all dropped by tonight (down to one petal left).  The rest will probably flower by morning tomorrow.

Mateo, I think you had said in an older thread that once the last petal has dropped give it another week or two to swell and wait for a ring to show around the bottom of the pod before picking. Is this still correct?

Two photos,

I had trouble with seedlings disappearing also. A few that were mixed in with my amaranth made it.

Mine have dropped the petals. What do you do with them after harvesting?

Nice job! I never grew pink ones

My petals lasted into a third day. Temps in the high 80's. I'm not
sure if that is unusual but in the past I was lucky if they made it
though the night.

These are my first ever success. They were hens and chicks seeds from a friend but I am not really seeing any chicks on them. It has been high 90s the past few days which may be helping cause the petals to drop. They are really beautiful flowers tbh. Seems I may get around six pods + some straw out of it. I have read alkaloids are present down the entire plant so I may cut it lower than a few inches below the pod.

When do you wait till to pick them? Also, is there a preferred method to drying them?

So I am unsure if I am allowed to post a photo of this so I will just describe it.

That pod that flowered, I went out to check on it and there are little spots of what looks to be brown oil all over the pod... This what I think it is? If so, should I leave it till harvest? Would using a piece of paper towel to wipe it off and then eating the piece of paper towel be worthwhile?

Edit: Nvm I figured it out.

Final Update:    Unless I feel like adding a trip report.

All the plants except one are now at two weeks since the petals have dropped. I harvested the early bloomer (whom was a bit over two weeks) to see what I had produced. I think I had chosen a good time to harvest, the pod was oozing candy and the crown was curving upwards.. somewhat. I hung and let it dry for two days then cut off the crown, about 3/4 of the seeds were fully mature and the pod is still that blueish green color.

Right after cutting the one poppy I decided to lick the sap from the bottom of the cut ... that left me feeling dull and sleepy for the entire night and halfway into the next day lol. For some reason the planty taste was kind of pleasant, followed by an intense bitter medicine taste that seemed to coat my entire tongue.

I am harvesting the stems and leaves too. They will be added to enhance the pods that I want to run a second time for tea.

Think I should harvest the rest? I kind of want to make tea out of my already deseeded pod/peduncle/crown and see what she is like. My tolerance right now is non-existant and I def have cimetidine if I wanted to potentiate.

Welp, off to look up decent tea recipes. I remember how to make the basic tea but I forget if adding lime or lemon juice aids in the extraction or is just for flavor.

I think you should have waited a bit longer.
It will develop a ring in the "bottleneck" under the pod and when this ring is becoming dark they say the alkaloids are at the peak.
You should also take weather into account.
After a period of hot sunny weather the alkaloids are high and after a period of bad weather and rain one should not harvest, just wait.
I read in some earlier posts that waiting until the pods starts to get pale seemed to increase the alkaloids.
I will wait with my harvest until the ring under the pod is dark.
I have one pod that starts to get a dark ring and it´s at least 3 weeks after the petals fell, if not more.
It´s of Persian White variety, here is a pic.

Thank you for the input. I do agree it could have waited longer if future weather were permitting. We have storms coming soon. I will be letting the others go longer. I am concerned about the yellow/purple color showing on one pod but maybe it just needs a drink. They are really struggling to finish off this last bit since they were in ill-prepared pots.

I am quite happy with the amount of what looks to be viable seeds. I live in a hot/humid climate during the growing season so getting genetics predisposed to thrive here is a goal of mine.
