Haha yeah I'm not spawning anything to those giant chip piles. The tree guy in my area inundated me over the last week. Which I love. But they're going here in my irrigated chip beds...

If you use some spawn on the giant pile they would be spread in your area. every little bit helps. next thing you no, mushrooms everywhere.

Its been a while since I've worked with wood lovers. In the past I've always spawned my grain to tubs of chips before using those chips to inoculate outdoor patches. Is that necessary? Can I just spawn straight to a pile of chips outdoors without worrying about animals or bugs getting to the grain?

Hi, some have good results (inculding myself) with milletspawn straight to woodchip bed, covered with straw.
I believe "liloldme" done the same way with cyans.
BUT the spawn to woodchips to betds is a bit safer.

Its safer to go in stages cause as a whole its stronger than individual grains but then again even a gang of raccoons cant eat every individual grains.

I've went oats to chips before but I have a higher success rate/faster spawn run with the increased surface are provided by sawdust spawn. I have a feeling that the similarity in spawn to substrate (sawdust to wood chips) makes the transition easier for the spawn to take hold; also any uncolonized sawdust (due to bacteria or some other factor) decreases the likelihood that the spawn will heat up like a compost pile and abort. This way even a bunk spawn bag can still be effective in an outdoor bed.

I had some mold problems with pure sawdust spawn due to clay soil poor drainage. I would mix some pasteurized chips in with the sawdust to give it some ventilation . This avoids the anaerobes too IME.

My gardens have pretty decent drainage, I usually line my beds with a few inches of gravel to prevent water logging. I generally mix with unpasteurized chopped straw and soaked oak chips.

Thanks! I’ve only done cubes but now starting with gourmet and woodlovers, very different. Used search function to look but most posts that are relevant, the pictures are deleted.

Serbica. After spawning it turned so blue that it's virtually BLACK! After taking this photo it even went a bit further.
I have never seen anything go so dark blue, not even Azzies.

It is difficult to cull through 184 pages of wood lover info to glean what you need to do. From another site I found this useful:Posted 11 October 2012 - 10:12 AM
"I share a lot of woodlover spawn with friends that would love to have a bed in their yard. With a couple exceptions almost every time its the same thing , a year later they say "made the bed , didn't fruit" and I say "did you layer the ingredients like I told you ?" ..."nah , I just kinda mixed all and spread it there".
Here's how I told them to do it:
-Find a spot that has at least partial shade. The sunnier the spot , the more you'll have to water and mulch. -Dig a small trench for the bed about 5 inches deep -Lay cardboard down on bottom of bed , soak it to wet it
- Lay down a thin layer of colonized woodchips spread out evenly - Spread a layer of pre-soaked sawdust over top the woodchips - Spread a layer of non-colonized , soaked woodchips (size should vary) - Spread a layer of shredded straw that's been soaked ,gently pat down to flatten - Spread a very thin layer of potting soil
The soil in layer is very important for the development of the colony.
The other layers such as cardboard on the bottom , the sawdust and straw become super-highways for mycelium growth and travel. The woodlovers chew through these layers and into the bigger woodchips as they prepare to consolidate and fruit.
Now repeat the steps and add more layers until the bed is about 6 inches thick (it will shrink a bit as it settles). The last layer is shredded straw on top of the bed and on top of that you place a couple inches of potting soil (that layer will shrink as it settles to). Around here its hot and dry all summer , mostly , and so because these woodlovers fruit in the fall , there's no reason to keep the top of the bed exposed until fall , so I add a mulch layer of straw/leaves/debris etc. You should be able to repeat the layering steps at least 3 times to stack up the bed about 5 or 6 inches. After I'm done I put a piece of plywood on the bed and walk on it to squeeze out the air pockets and help it settle.
When you layer your woodlover beds like this , loaded with woodchip spawn , they really take off in a good way and have everything they need to fruit large canopies in the fall. Your job from there on is to keep the bed watered and prevent it from drying out , which really sets it back.
This is one of the best methods for getting woodlover fruits the same year you make your beds. Not always possible ... but worth the effort.
Anyhow , just trying to lend a hand to those who feel the woodlover calling."
And from another source: This is how this bed is constructed:
The redbrick was used to define the boundary and a then the soil scooped out about 3 inches deep into the ground (tree roots stopped further progress) The Bottom was lined with a cardboard box soaked with rain water A layer of soaked (24 hrs then drained 24 hrs) uncolonized hardwood chips (likely black cherry) spread out over the cardboard 1 full shoebox of colonized hickory chip spawn spread out on top of the wood chips Soaked Hardwood/Knotweed/Spongy Wet Rotted Maple/Organic Soil Mix layer on top of the spawn (hardwood and knotweed treated same as above 24S/24D) 1 full shoebox of colonized hickory chip spawn spread out on top of the wood/knotweed/soil chips Soaked Hardwood/Knotweed/Spongy Wet Rotted Maple/Organic Soil Mix layer on top of the spawn (hardwood and knotweed treated same as above 24S/24D) 1 full shoebox of colonized hickory chip spawn spread out on top of the wood/knotweed/soil chips Soaked Hardwood/Knotweed/Spongy Wet Rotted Maple/Organic Soil Mix layer on top of the spawn (hardwood and knotweed treated same as above 24S/24D)

Wow, great write up seeker, thanks!
I’m going to use pots but I’ll definitely try this layering technique.. I’m too far north to try beds so hoping to get an earlier start then fruit in the garage if needed.
Thanks Adas and P9. The prints I have are pretty dirty, they had mold immediately on the plates so I transferred out pretty fast and will do so again. Just thought it looked weird that just the transferred agar wedge turned that dark colour (not green) and the outside growth is white.
