I believe you are right with it being in main memory. In write-back the info is written only to the block of cache. The modified block is written to main memory when it is replaced. The dirty bit is used to determined if the block is modified or not.

actually, I found the answer to my own question. The "dirty" bit is kept on the cache. If a DMA transfer is to be done, the cache is flushed(all lines with dirty bits high are written back to main memory) before the transfer.
