Need help with a pored mushroom

A co-worker brought me this mushroom from her front yard. It was growing out of the ground but she couldn't tell me the trees around.I wasn't able to get a big enough spore deposit to see the color but I still used the microscope. At first I thought it was a Strobilomyces but the spores aren't reticulated or look anything like that. I'm stuck, help please. There is a mature mushroom and a younger one that doesn't have the pore surface exposed yet.

Yes, Strobilomyces floccopus was my initial thought, but the stipe is unlike it and the more mature mushroom don't have elevated scales and no red staining. The spores are different but I fear contamination. I saw no spore deposit so I cut a piece of pore tissue.

Xerocolmellus sp. also crack like that, but I don't know of any white species. The top one looks weirdly pale, but it also looks like it might be infected with bolete eater (Hypomyces chrysospermus), which could be what is making it look so weird.

Understand that many mushroom species cannot be 100% reliably identified by photographs alone, even by an expert, so it may not be possible to go beyond suggesting a probable genus.

Not Strobilomyces, as the spores are typically globose/subglobose. I think it’s something like Xerocomellus, however I think it’s parisitized by Hypomyces. Agree with above.

Those don't have smooth spores.



It is a Xerocomellus parasitized by Hypomyces microspermus.

I'm in Monterey county so its probably Xerocomellus dryophilus. I'm going to show her pictures of Xerocomellus and see if she recognizes it growing in her yard before.

Likely.    Xerocomellus mendoceniensis is also common in Monterey county.
