Your problem is a program is still running when you click shut down. Chances some of the internet programs may be saying "Wait I have to do Somthing!!!!!" When they don't have to do shet.

AOL Instat Messagener, ICQ, Shockwave Player, exct...

I had a problem like that when Shockwave was installed. It never played anything and wouldn't shut down when I clicked shutdown!!! I would have to end the task. (WinNT 4.0)

You might want to check some of the new service packs and install them. It might fix your problem.

Also uninstall any programs that you are not using, exspecialy anything that is pro-active. Above mentiioned programs. Norton Crash Guard.... Hell every Norton Product. Part of the Problem is Win98 the NT kernel is much better and can handel BS program problems.

I can think of two possible ways to fix your problem.

1) Install Windows 2000.

- or -

2) Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System tools, and then click System Information.

On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

On the General tab, click Advanced.

Click the Disable Fast Shutdown check box to select it, click OK, and then click OK again.

Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

My guess is that one of those two suggestions will work.

Yes, Windows 98 has some very enlightening ideas about the definition of the word "fast". Just makes me love the movie South Park even more..hehe

I have gone through before and forced quit every program except Explorer and SysTray.

Ythan, I tried your 2nd suggestion and discovered that fast shutdown is already disabled

Thanks for the help guys.
