Why havent we had this thread a long time ago lol

:popcorn::takingnotes:

My contribution is that a couple spoons of powdered manure in your regular recipe can make whimpy myc hefty hefty hefty, specially exotics but even cubes to oh pans look great on it.

A couple mazatepec plates going to grain tonight. I really like the t4 plate very even and the t6 plate looks cool.

So I made some plates with grain boil water instead of my usual malt extract, and the growth on them is very faint and almost see through.  I also used less agar, but I am assuming the change in appearance of growth is from using grain water...

Is that accurate?  Does less nutrients, or more nutrients cause it to grow this way?  Can I still transfer some of the "faint" myc onto some new plates?  Ive tried the typical MEA recipe of 10g each agar and malt extract to 500ml water, and got good growth on those but the agar is too hard for my liking.  I'm guessing the grain water was low on nutrients is what caused that growth, but maybe it's the opposite?

Anyone with experience on this have any ideas?

P.S. I don't have a good pic because of condensation but I can open a plate for a pic if I need to.

Were the plates from a transfer or did you start with lc, LI or spores?  Some myc I find is just more whispy than others.  If they were from transfers, was the myc strong to start?

I’ve used grain water and found that I had not watered it down enough, too many nutes and it would be slow growing.  Then I put more water and myc would grow faster.  I can’t say I’ve noticed thin myc though, but this is coming from a noob.

Everyone finds what they like but my love is with PDA.

They were transfers from plates that had strong tomentose growth, made from standard MEA recipe.

I had this same problem. I did full strength, and 50% diluted, and ended up with the same thing that your describing. I havent used it again.  Now I use mea, pda, only. I've read us agar is good... But didnt work for shit for me.

If you dont like how hard it is, just use less agar.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I'm ready!

And wcg18, those kinds of conditions are why I stopped using grain water for my agar. What type of grains? I used oats for mine and think that people who use denser recipes with grains that are more "grainy" (less hull) like wheat/rye get better results with their grain water. I had better results from using boiled potato water (left over from boiling potatoes to make mashed potatoes), but honestly, when I went over to LME it worked out best.

Also, did you not add any sugars to it? I find that the type of food dye I use is basically pure sugar so a few drops does it (you can see the lack of color in the AGAR over time as proof that myc eats those sugars up like crazy).

Good luck!

I used hard wheat boil water, was a nice dark gold color and I thought it would be enough nutrients, and no I didn't add any sugar.  I have malt extract so I will just go back to that.

Do you think it was just not enough nutrients, causing the myc to spread more thinly?  I'll figure it out eventually, but would be nice to know if I need to use more or less.  I will do some experiments with different ratios next time I pour some plates.

Cool thanks, not sure how I missed that thread.  Got a better idea of what to try next time I pour some plates. 😉👍

I took a small fruit what I thought was a pin, and the cap opened up in my agar plate. I see spores all over the agar, will this create additional possible contains or should I not worry since they won’t germinate by the time I transfer clean myc out?

Try to take a transfer, find a sector with established growth and redo the plate to keep things organized

Hi guys,

Here's an update on my progress with agar so far. Dropped my first two T1 plates in rye berry jars a couple of days ago and more to follow shortly, I think..

Any comments are much appreciated. I need to learn..

McKennaii from clone T2

Ogre Boy from sporeprint (T1)

Ogre Boy from clone (T2)

PE6 from sporeprint

RustyWhyte from sporeprint (sry upside down)

Huautla from sporeprint

My attempt at cloning commercial truffles has sadly failed. Will try again..

Any comments? I'm thinking of using any good T1 dishes for a2g and take a transfer first.

Much appreciated

Hi friend!
I saw you name and thought of the lovely pictures of you and your GF you sent me  Why you call them ogre boy? Thought we found out there are hawaian?

Anyways, have to say you did are GREAT job pouring your plates, no condensation at all, very clean looking!

Wish you the best mate!
