Man, its been dry as down here.

How are your finds?

Obviously caps change due to their climate, ones i have seen recently are very pale.

Found one patch which someone ravaged and pulled up 90% of the pins... Aside from that, nada. I need to go look for some new patches tho, perhaps my old ones are all dead...

Been really dry tho, as you said, hopefully this coming Sunday we get some decent rain!

It's the first sub I ever found. The cap has dried out a bunch, which is why it's a whitish colour instead of the typical caramel colour. Also the size, if I recall correctly, is about 3-4cm across

Is the cap smooth and shiny? I found something a bit like that but different. The cap of mine was 'dented' in the centre so raised on the edges. It looked nasty so I left it.

Today in Northland we have had rain overnight and it's supposed to rain more (?) I haven't been out looking but I've seen plenty of common and probably inedible, probably toxic mushrooms and fungi. We have grassy areas, a pile of mulch, bark gardens, and a lot of bush. I guess I need to look in other places. Or do I need to look more closely?

If you have a camera, take that out with you :smile: Nothing wrong with testing your new camera, or maybe you need some photos for a project, or maybe you just like taking photos of the native flora. Either way, it's best to just walk slowly and scan the ground. If you go out in the morn then there will be fewer people about and you can take your jolly old time.

And to answer your other question, to quote another member here (although I can't remember who)


"Find a spot that looks mushroomy, and stare at it. you will be amazed at what you find"


I'm also pretty sure liberty caps grow in Northland as well, so you could check paddocks and meadows (ideally ones that have or have had livestock on them as semilanceata love manured soil (not the actual shit itself)

Thanks, and I didn't know mushroomy was a word lol. It's cool to know liberty caps probably grow here. I guess I haven't been out that much. I can't really think of places where there's paddocks in Whangarei. A few come to mind, but not very accessible. I live by native bush with wood pigeons and everything. There's a river running thru it, maybe I'll check it out.

Look up Psilocybe subaeruginosa and familiarise yourself with its characteristics. This is the species you'll be looking for. If you also look through this thread you'll find tonnes of pictures of them and thus learn the most common gill colours.

Subs are by far the most common shroom you'll find in NZ, although there are others. That picture you posted is just one way they can look. As I said, read through the thread. There's also several years of other threads for NZ, in addition to a bunch of other stuff around shroomery and the wider internet that'll help you out.

Imma stop replying here now tho because this thread is supposed to be for posting finds of actives, and we're filling up the thread with other stuff.
