Found one of them as well, but being a total newb I just left it be. Is it active?
No it isn’t. You can post Id requests elsewhere on the forum. When I was a new hunter I found just following this thread to be the best help in finding the correct mushrooms. Good luck

Fair enough. I should have clarified, It apparently could well be active, but it isn’t the type of actives that nz hunters would usually look for.
Out of interest, have you tried them?

Akatarawa, as you can clearly observe the mushrooms in the image are clearly displaying blue bruising, they are an active species.

Wasn't planning on picking, removing or using anything just yet but thought I might orientate myself with some good starting spots. Found lots of mushrooms lol... just not psychedelic ones. I assmue I want rain in the days before hunting? What is an ideal time of day to go hunting? I've heard you're looking for frost?
Here are a few pics of the mushrooms I found

Happy hunting!

Just had a little rain here in Dunedin. Might need a bit more for things to get properly wet though.
Went on a stroll the other day (rehabbing a hip), nothing worth picking but got a good couple of pics.

Also got another little harvest from the garden last week.

Liberty Caps in Dunedin are starting to pick up, forgot to take a picture before I started drying, there quite far along. Hopefully this one will be a fruitful season for us here. Found a bunch of subs here too but they still don't seem to quite be getting enough moisture in the places I've been looking.

Should I leave these overnight, or pick em now? (Fenced in my back yard)
Also, (and if not appropriate here, sorry) these don’t look like subs to me. Growing in same habitat.

Might as well leave them if they are so local to you.

Definitely, they are in the pin stage and arent dropping spores until the cap opens up. Maybe water them here and there and of course take more pics as they grow!
EDIT: and yes the other ones arent subs, they could be galerina which is poisonous. Leave em be.

Update on the the little sub pot. They seem to have a fairly similar morphology to the mushrooms from which the mycelium was taken (last picture in my signature) despite growing in a very different substrate. The mycelium was taken from subs that were growing in wood shavings and debris, whereas the pot is actually full of apple tree wood believe it or not. I had a few bags of wood chips designed for smoking food laying around and chose the wood chips that looked most similar to what I'm used to finding subs in. They happened to be from an apple tree and the subs seem to love it.

Leave them be! Give them semi-regular waterings to keep them going and let them grow for the next week and you'll have some beasties!

With those brown gills I'd say this is more likely to be Panaeolus foenisecii
