My Pink Oyster Mushrooms are Dieing
    #25864155 -

Hello,

New grower. I purchased a ready-to-grow Pink Oyster Mushroom Kit by Forest Origins and got a good harvest out of it. After it stopped producing, I broke the block up and added it to a bucket of Wood Chips that I soaked in Pickling Lime and drained. Several weeks later I got some pinning out of the holes in the bucket, but they are dieing and drying up. With the original kit, I just misted the mushrooms with water several times per day as instructed. Any idea why these new ones are killing over? How should I proceed? I guess I should pull the dead matter out of the holes so new ones can push through?

Thanks for any insight!

I may have a few suggestions. One is what temp your growing it in can be it. This strain likes high heat, 80-100 degrees because it's a tropical strain. The other is the total amount of your substrate in your container versus the area that is exposed to the air is critical factor  for mushroom formation and yields. If there s not enough substrate volume compared to the surface area you have expose it will cause the mushroom to either abort or initiate or form and will quickly dry up and will never mature.  :mushroom2:

This.  The substrate looks very loose.  Also there's  some suspect dark spots on the top left of the third picture.

From what I recall, lime baths don't work great on woods like they do on straw at preventing contam.

You have a point I did not think about this, although its pink oyster which is well known for out competing molds on agar... so why not wood?  This is an extremly aggresive oyster species, although I agree with the loose packed observation. Although this could just be a facade to our eyes. Either way let us know when you find out the problem... though even with a contaniment I don’t see why it would do this, because it’s such an aggresive species that I feel like it would flush fine regardless, but then again this is mycelium that was spent right? Which could explain it’s confusion be ause you usually add the spent mycelium to outside patches not re inoculate another inside grow container, and you also streched it out after  and took it to another generation, and we dont even know what generation the original cultivator made that bag from.... so I feel there are alot of factor at play here, though Im intrigued to see what the problem is.  Could be many things

I didn't "pack" the chips. You're saying it would have been better to do that?

I've kept them at about 70F give or take. I also think the holes are too small at only 1/2". I'll make them at least 1" next time. I used tweezers to remove the dead ones. Hopefully new ones will poke out. Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, the mycelium will quickly lose vigor in relation to the amount of 'air gap' they have to cross.

It's why people prefer saw dust, it's much finer and the mycelium doesn't have to use as much energy colonizing.

i tested some oysters i cloned from the store for the first time and had the same thing happen ,they didnt like the bins and grew all stem no cap so i just left the freezer bags stuffed with straw sitting out some of them fruited and some dryed out and after i payed closer attention and started putting freezer bags over the clusters like a dom they started preforming better !

All stip (stem) no cap is an indication of not enough FAE.

You can not just mist the mushrooms they need humidity not water on them. Also misting the pins directly will cause more aborts. You can use a clear plastic bag with holes poked in it and mist the bag not the mushrooms. But then you run into having to remove the bags so they get FAE your best bet in a mini greenhouse with passive air exchange.
