In the concentrations we're using, I really don't think it matters that much. It's a source of monosaccharides, that's what counts. Someone speak up if I'm off base here.

My understanding is it just makes it harder to identify contaminates because how dark the agar will be.
First pancake syrup then dark karo, you ok or just using whats on hand? Want me to send you some clear karo?

Next time I will get light Karo. When I made my plates, they look great! I used just a drop of dark karo, 3.3 grams instant potato flakes, 2 grams agar, 1/2 cup of water and 2 drops of food coloring. The agar looks great. I injected 1 cc of MS Syringe to it to see if I get any growth. I was just curious about the Karo or pancake syrup will holt growth, as I said, just a drop so I do hope I see growth on the plate to confirm it is okay to use.

I am attempting my first use of agar and thought this tek might be the best to get me started on my agar journey. I am having a slight issue with getting my agar to set. I am using one 25gram sachet of the telephone brand agar, 5 table spoons of potatoe flakes and 1Liter of water. I put all this in an easy pour glass jug and have arranged a sort of double boiler set up. Everything has somewhat dissolved All bar a slight settlement issue everything seemed to be going good. I spooned some of my mixture into a cup and placed it into the fridge to see how it would set and it has definitely thickened but no where near the solidity I would have expected with agar. Would appreciate some ideas as to why this may be happening?

could be a few reasons. it may not be getting hot enough or it could be not a stiff enough mixture. just mix it in a pot and boil it straight. fuck a double boiler

what worked for me is 3.3g potato flakes, 2g agar telephone brand, 1/2 cup water and a drop of karo. dissolve in a small pan while constantly stirring, until simmering, about 5min. pour then let cool.

I just thought, since water boils at 100C and agar melts at around 80C it would suffice. Plus the jug was just easy to poor from. Clearly I was wrong though, thanks for your replies!

So is there another temp for the dissolve point of powdered agar or something?

Okay thank you very much for the info! One last question, this may be very nooby but if I added extra agar power to compensate for it not solidifying and I reached a consistency that the agar did solidify when cooled could you see any obvious complications come time to grow mycelium on it? Next time I will definitely be following original tek word for word until experienced enough to begin experimenting but I just didn’t want to throw it away and tried to make the best of my situation.

as long as you can't pour it like a liquid it'll be fine. if it is too stiff spores wont germinate on it

If you like, Munchauzen has a recipe for pasty plate agar, down to the gram, which works really well for me.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23188000
His newer recipe (the one in the text), apart from being soft, has a slightly lower nutrient ratio, which I found was more likely to result in rhizomorphic cultures, which are a bit easier to work with IMO.
