Black Kow from a department store is the best way to get cow manure..lol.

However, if you are going to go collect it... it needs to be seasoned and aged. Old, cracker dry, dirt clod looking clumps. If you know a cow that took a dump last summer, then you can collect it this summer for use.

Do not use fresh (few weeks old) manure...

The problem with the "Black Kow" product is that it turns to a sloppy mud mess when you use it on it's own...If you're growing cubes coir will provide just as many if not more fruits than "Black Kow".

I've read the thread....I'm still on the fence...for a noob starting out go with coir until you have a better understanding of mush growth.

just :2cents:

Online company called "domyown" sells black kow 50lb bags for $30 free shipping. This is the stuff i'm trying out.

$30!!!! That's insane. At the store it's like $6 for a 50lb bag. Butt it works fine, I've used it many times without even adding water to it or pasturizing. Straight outta the bag mixed with grain spawn in a monotub.

And it doesn't turn into mud or a sloppy mess. Just don't add water to it. It's already hydrated.

People said it turns to mud cuz they obviously added water, and too much water. Coir turns to soup with too much water too. Just use it right outta the bag. No need to even pasteurized it, it sits in a sealed bag for however long without molding.

Yea. There's not much difference at all if any. But black kow doesn't require prep an my all and it's cheap af. $6 for 50 lbs...

Like I said....still on the fence about it. If it works then awesome, my struggle is the acceptance among the community...I'm not seeing everyone abandoning coir for "Black Kow"

I will continue to monitor the thread tho...

Well that's just cuz everyone loves coir. I still use coir too. It's light weight, I don't gotta carry 50 lb bags into my house 😂 but it does work fine, I did it all last summer. If u don't believe it, try it urself for a test run. It's cheap and if u don't like it u can mix the rest in ur garden (if u have one)

Just don't add much water, if any. Mine was plenty hydrated already but obviously it varies. I wouldn't say it works any BETTER than coir. But it can still be useful, especially when ur tight on cash and HD has it on sale

Pasty did a side by side of coir and hpoo ... the coir I believe out performed not by much but always a few hundred wet grams ...  cow poo is fine you have to mix it with straw I believe fahtster has a cpoo write up

I use professorpinheads coir/hpoo/verm/gypsum tek and love it hpoo on it's own doesn't fluff up as great as the coir mixed in

Cow manure works fantastic. It's best to pick them dry and hard. You will need a wood chipper to shred it. It's very hard, more so than horse manure. You can mix it with any kind of other substrate/verm/coir if you want or use it straight.

Black kow is trash in my experience. I've tried to use it several times when it's been raining for 2 months straight and I can;t collect field manure. It's full of sticks and mostly dirt. And sometimes a grey clay wet stinky shit bag. I think there may be some regional differences maybe with those that have good luck with it. I hear some people say they use it straight from the bag. No way from the bags I have used before. You can smell the bacteria rotting it.

I know that pasty did his side by side with plain coir being better for him, but that is not my experience at all. I get way better quality and quantity mushrooms with good proper mixed and pasteurized substrates like hpoo/cpoo/coir/verm than with straight coir. You wont be growing any baby arm sized mushrooms on straight coir. Nearly always little dinky 5-10 grammers.

so it seems that most are saying to pick the cpoo thats dry as a popcorn fart.  i dont think ive ever seen wild mushrooms growing from poo thats that dry, usually a little aged and definitely not fresh. so any reasoning behind using the poo thats so dry?
not saying its wrong to use cpoo thats that dry just trying to figure this shit out. heh heh

Because the cows piss on their shit and you font want any ammonia left on it .. you will mix the poo up with other ingredients and then bring to field capacity (water content) on your own

Also because who wants to pick up a smelly wet cow shit....it's easiest to shred and store and mix into subs when it's dry.

You want field aged manure, thats all that really matters.
Stable manure often has woodchips in it and this is where you will find manure with amonia in it, they arent looking for bullzeye points in the field.
Cow manure is heavy and holds lots of water so try mix with another bulk sub

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn
