German company introduces new portable machine that police can use to test drivers for drug use

HAMBURG, Germany - A German company on Tuesday unveiled a new portable machine that police can use to detect drug usage by drivers pulled over in traffic stops.

The device, called DrugTest, is the size of a shoe box and can be operated with the power of a car's cigarette lighter.

It analyzes samples of a person's saliva and can recognize indications of heroin, hashish, ecstasy, cocaine and other drugs. Results are available in 15 minutes, said Albert Jugel, head of the Luebeck-based firm Draegersafety, which produces the machine.

DrugTest is the first device of its kind, and was developed in cooperation with OraSure Technologies Inc., of Bethlehem, Pa., Jugel said.

Draegersafety, is also a leading manufacturer of alcohol breath tests.

DrugTest sells for about $7,800 per unit.

There is already a bill in the U.S. House to allow drug testing for traffic stops. They won't just test for sobriety either. Anyone caught with metabolites of any illegal drug in their system would get a DUID and probably lose their liscense.

Basically manditory drug testing for all U.S. citizens.

I always thought it would be a good advancement to make a test like that but of course bad stuff will follow it :frown:

Would that be constitutional? I dont see how you can be charged w/ "driving under the influence" if you're not "under the influence." And being tested w/o a valid reason?
