How do u set precise time on your watch and smart phone??
    #25857927 - 03/07/19 08:45 AM (5 years, 2 months ago)

I googled this but nothing good came up.

Smart phones have their time set automatically, but how do u know it's precise? Down to a second, cos that's what i want. If i compare the time on my smart phone with the time news start on tv, timing differs, tv news time is about 5 - 10 seconds lagging. What do u trust? Tv or smart phones. I'll be getting some good wrist watch soon, I am tired of reaching into my pocket and then grabbing the phone, unfolding the case and then manipulating bunch of buttons just to know exact time, all with one hand also juggling it so it doesn't fall from hand.

With android phones you need to go into settings for "time & date" and uncheck auto time set, you can then change the time to whatever zone or time you'd like.

If what you need is a stopwatch or timer that is down to the second, most phones come with an app called "time" or "clock" if your phone doesn't you can get one for free off the app store. once you have the app, swiping left or right changes the type of timer you are setting and swiping up/down on the numbers changes time til alert.

If it is an apple, good luck. I don't own one.

If you want accurate time then quit trying to set your clock by the TV news.  The clock in your smartphone is plenty precise though.  Really not sure what the issue is here.

Here's what you do...

Step 1 : Go outside
Step2: is time moving
Step 3: throw your watch into the river.

The time on your phone is set through NTP. This is usually fairly precise, but you're never quite sure how precise, since you generally don't have access to a verified time service other than those relying on the same kind of NTP service your phone does. One exception is a simple 'radio controlled' LF clock. They're dirt cheap and may be of interest to you. Whether they are reliable to the level of seconds depends on the clock itself. Digital clocks will usually be accurate to your required precision. Another way is to precisely time your phone with a radio station that transmits the familiar beeps on the whole hours, but these have gotten scarce over the decades and I'm not sure how commonplace they are/were in the US.

One potential reason why the tv is lagging is that with digital broadcasts (which I assume you're watching) are buffered somewhere along the way to accommodate for data transmission interruptions. Hence, if you're watching digital broadcast, particularly over your typical home fixed infrastructure (cable/DSL), you're not actually watching 'live' tv but always lagging behind a few to a few dozen seconds.

The real question is: what kind of precision do you need, and why? Do you need relative precision, or absolute precision? What's your allowable margin of error?

Digital watches are pretty precise, with those little quartz tuning fork things.

As long as we're on the topic of timekeeping...

The most accurate type of clock is an Atomic Clock.

If you cant get one of those (they are not very much), a cell phone clock should be pretty accurate. Most smart phones have "clock apps" that look like a night clock. They are pretty cool.

NTP precision is 15 microseconds, default NTP polling interval is usually 1-10 minutes.  Accurate down to the second, absolutely.  If the oscillator was so unstable that the time drifted significantly between NTP polls, your phone would be a paperweight.  You can get wristwatches that autosync to the atomic clock radio beacon that are extremely accurate as well.
