I'm watching all these videos of huge oyster fruiting rooms with hundreds of pounds, and NO ONE is wearing a mask. Obviously because they need to make a video. But there are SEVERAL, science based scholarly research articles about the dangers of exposure to oyster spores and how the body reacts and what is going on inside you.
Just go to google and type in Quote: oyster mushroom spore allergy
and look for the PDF case studies.
I just heard about this last week, from RR. And then I kept reading lots of case studies about it, and how it can be devastating, like the flu.
PLEASE people spread the word to anyone you know growing oyster mushrooms indoors, or even outdoors in heavy fruitings or enclosed spaces. Wear a mask!
Here's a post RR made over on another site. Please use caution. Spread the word!
Quote: "Be careful growing those indoors, especially if it's your bedroom where you spend many hours per day. It doesn't take but a few years to develop the allergy to oyster spores." (source; also has more details about his severe reaction to them)
"Wear a respirator from day one. It takes a year or two for the allergy to develop if you're exposed a lot. My mistake was using a mini-greenhouse in my bedroom, where I was exposed to the spores all night while sleeping."
"It took about six months of having them in my bedroom daily to get the allergy. I had grown them for at least a decade before that, but in a separate area where I only got exposed when tending them. However, once the allergy developed, I can't even go into a grow room for two minutes if there's an oyster spore load there."
symptoms and how the allergy develops; a bit more info
so many spores they clog an A/C unit
his cautionary tale
"Furthermore, after a few years of growing oyster mushrooms you will be so allergic to the spores that you'll have to wear a full face respirator just to enter the grow room." (source)
"Oyster spore allergy takes a few years of heavy exposure to growing them to develop, so a new grower isn't going to experience it." (source)
"Actually, allergy might not even be the best word to describe the immune system reaction to oysters, which is much closer to a bad case of the flu than standard allergies." (source)
"I suggest a full face respirator with charcoal cartridges and an N95 attachment to go over the charcoal canisters. I bought mine from uline.com so I could go back to oyster growing" (source)

Knowing this, making even a video should wear a mask. Do the talking part outside, then put the mask on to go inside.
