Pretty crazy survival story of two young girls who got lost in a Humbolt forest for 44 hours: https://www.insideedition.com/how-2-sisters-used-teachings-4-h-club-while-lost-forest-44-hours-51148
Have u been lost in a forest before? What survival skills did u use? Where did you learn those skills from?

Never been lost. But once as a teen i had my freind drop me off on top of the mnt with 2 weeks food and a water filter. He was suppose to come back with more food and stay with me but never did. I managed to make it 4 weeks cause i had a fly rod with me. It wasn't till my water filter broke that i decided i had to hike home cause he had forgotten about me. (Dick move) i hiked 20 miles in one day to get to a payphone to call a ride. I cant imagine being lost. The stress that adds must be unreal.

I think I could survive if I had a topography map, compass, and backpacking gear. And the only time I'm deep in the forest I would have those things with me.
And if I get way off trail and I'm unable to reconnect with it, I would try to find a water source. A stream or River and just follow it. Life is always near water.

Definitely. But imagine u are those girls, without anything but clothing on you. How crazy would that be? What survival skills would kick in?
Ive been lost once in a forest. It was with my friend, on a random hike in Hawaii. We were lost for about 10 hours. Luckily he had a cell phone on him. Got rescued by the Coast Guard. That was one hell of a hike. Damn. Its a long story....
But after that, never going unpreppared into a forest again.

Well if you put it that way, then I don't really have any survival skills. I mean I've been out in the wilderness a bunch so I'm not a complete novice but without any gear or a map, I would just focus on shelter, water, and finding life.
The one thing I do know is you're supposed to follow streams or rivers if you can find them. I heard that once on a documentary about a women that survived a crazy plane crash. Her plane was struck by lightening and disintegrated in mid air. She survived a 2 mile fall to the earth. She found civilization by following a stream...

I've never had trouble in PA as long as it is around the warmer months. The most dangerous part of PA is the elements in winter that could kill lost campers.
I did some winter camping in my life. Building large fires (big big very warm) can keep you warm at night. Bag your dry clothes and keep them dry as much as possible. During one winter trip without tent, I got rained on like a monsoon and then it turned to snow. I had to call it quits at about 2A. I had no chance.
In the warm weather, food and water easy in PA. Wild onions, dandilion, Eastern hemlock pine tree needles, worms, and all kinds of bugs. The state is riddled with waterways and creeks.
My buddy and I got lost on a summer trip once. Many Miles in and off trail. It was no problem. We drank from streams (boiled some) and ate some wild shit. I always take a .22 rifle camping as well.

Humbolt County was a good movie about guerilla bud growing.
Iβve been lost but I always find my way back from aware observation.

Nice. Its always good to keep "survival mode" in the back of your mind when hiking into new areas. It can be easy to get lost.

Another story about getting lost then being discovered alive, this time 5 days: https://abcnews.go.com/US/footprints-lead-missing-hikers-rescue-california-lost-days/story?id=62323131
It is so critical to know how to navigate using either technology or nature (both would be best). Besides procuring food and water, this is number 1!

I don't know how to navigate with compass and map, but I want to learn.
I guess there is a little bit of estimation to creating markers if I am right about something I read. Or I'm way off.

If u ever backcountry, u should definitely learn.
Its not hard just takes time studying maps, some geography and understanding North/South/East/West Directions.

How do you tell how far you have traveled?
Steps? Markers? Both?

If u have a topographic map, u can estimate your distance travalled. Also if u know your hiking speed, say 5 miles an hour average, u can use that as well to give a rough estimate.
Best way to tell is a topographic map and using the scale on it.

LC beat me to it on the topography map. Iβm heading to SEKI in June. Most of our hiking will take place on trail but about ΒΌ of it will be x- country hiking where a topography map will be key.
General rule of thumb is 15 mins per mile if on flat terrain.

I live up in the MHNF and we have to deal with idiots getting lost up here all the time. I've had more than one hunting season ruined by yelling search and rescue from some idiot that can't be bothered to read a map, stay on the trail, or check the weather before going out.
I'm a huge proponent of not allowing search and rescue into wilderness areas.
It's not a fucking city park, it's real wilderness.
