Sawdust as bulk?
    #25852090 -

I have looked around but cant seem to find a definite answer.

I got a lot of tropical hardwood sawdust; mahogany, teak, indian almond, etc. These are usually hard to digest, rot resistant woods. Can I use this sawdust, maybe supplemented with something, as a bulk material instead of coco coir?

I suppose you could if prepared properly but I would use that to grow gourmet mush or make furniture, even barbecue fuel, and just get coco coir for cubes.

cubensis.

I am pretty sure I can get the sawdust cheaper than the coco coir. The guy sold me 1 trash bag full of wood shavings and 2 trash bags full of sawdust for $7. I also have it here already, I dont have to go out.

Sawdust will tend to form wet clumps that don't fluff up nicely like coir.  Coir is like small bits of sponge, they hold moisture really well and at the same time fluff up nicely and allow air to permeate the substrate.  It's possible you could make it work well enough to get some kind of harvest, but I wouldn't expect a very good yield.

Good luck.  Be sure to post photos if it works out, I'd like to see it.

I'd assume you have sawdust left over from woodworking and want to put it to good use. I'd be interested to hear if such "waste" can be used for cubes.
