He also tried to tell me America is responsible for Russians poor life expectancy . I didn't even
know  what to say .  Being a person that eats healthy and works out I usually lay that on the individual , or at least their oppressive super corrupt govt run by rich fucks living in palaces .

The collapse of the Soviet Union did lead to a five year drop in Russian life expectancy.

Considering the US life expectancy is dropping, and the US is the poster child for unregulated capitalism, which is what post-Soviet Russia looked like, there are certainly parallels that can be drawn.

Drawing parallels isn't the same as assigning blame or responsibility .
Why did the Soviet Union collapse ?

They collapsed because their economic system was unsustainable. Their isolation from the world was unsustainable and their satellite states were no longer interested in propping up the Soviet empire.

What koods said, but with an added caveat of "in the context of the world of the 80s and 90s"

Sorta like how a mom and pop general store is "unsustainable" next door to a walmart.

Just going to put this here because I find it the best place to put it and Trump is a populist with no long term interest in the country:

Former president Trump wanted to withdrawal from NATO so the legislative branches of government had to pass a bill prohibiting the president from having that kind of authority. He also praised Putin. And compared the US to Russia as a means to satisfy his constituent's popular opinion (at the time).

He's fucking retarded. A used car salesman of a politician. And those used cars have sawdust in their motors. But hey, at least you had a Mercedes in your driveway.

NATO is a terrorist organization. We should withdraw from it. Unfortunately this is political anathema and would require someone of true courage like Tulsi Gabbard to pull it off.

The Soviet Union had been successful for almost its entire history at preventing its citizens from ever experiencing what life was like on the other side of the iron curtain. You could leave the USSR, but you couldn’t get out of Soviet controlled Eastern European countries. All of that control Moscow had over freedom of movement evaporated when east Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, etc opened their borders. That really was the beginning of the downfall. The whole facade was crumbling.

The Soviets had total control over information entering and citizens from leaving. Like I mentioned before, when I went to the Soviet Union, they wouldn’t allow me to bring in any books or newspapers. That is what they were most afraid of. Once inside, we had a government minder who led tours and did his best to minimize our contacts with everyday Russians. We ate our meals in the restaurant in the hotel that was for foreigners only. I managed to slip away one afternoon when I skipped the outing to the ballet. I walked around the city by myself and went into stores. I’m sure I was being followed, and I didn’t talk to anyone. I wasn’t worried about myself but maybe that me talking to someone could put them at risk.

Why did the USSR fail? Because its citizens were becoming aware of how completely backwards and bleak their existence was compared to their western neighbors.

The thing back then with Ukraine was clearly improper. I don't know if it was exactly impeachment worthy.

The president hijacked official US policy and held it hostage for his own personal ambitions.

“There is a level of admiration I actually have for China because their basic dictatorship is allowing them to actually turn their economy around on a dime and say we need to go green, we need to start, you know, investing in solar. Trump loves authoritarian dictators.

Trudeau loves authoritarian dictators.

Doesn't that make both of them terrible people?

Not sure where you got the idea I think that. I don’t. Knowing little to nothing about the political demography of Ukraine I’d guess maybe 15-40% are genocidal racists, not that different from the US in that respect. Again, just a guess though, I certainly don’t have my finger on the pulse of the consciences of 40 million people on the other side of the world. But I know enough about the Cold War struggle in that country, and I know that in order to subvert communist parties in the whole of Europe, the West (mainly US and Britain, although dozens of nations were involved) propped up fascists as a bulwark against the reds. As you might expect, the consequences of our “fund the bad guy to take out our more immediate enemy” strategy created a situation where fascists, to this day, wield a great deal of political, and cultural, power in countries like Ukraine.

I think the more interesting question is “would the US support a country full of Nazis?” to which the answer is absolutely yes.
