Pretty much how I see it.

There is a lot going on. The republican party is basically turning into the Trump party, and anyone who does not support Trump is being removed from the party. Shit's wild.

Quote:
"What is at stake in the Big Lie and all the Republican efforts to keep it in play—the shenanigans in the secret Maricopa County, Arizona, recount; the censuring of Republicans who voted to impeach the former president; the expected removal of Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney from a leadership role in the party; and so on—is not the past election of 2020, but the upcoming election of 2024.

The Republican Party has demonstrated that it intends to control the government in the future, no matter what most Americans want. Iowa, Georgia, Montana, and Florida have already passed voter suppression laws, while other states are considering them. (Governor Ron DeSantis signed Florida’s bill yesterday live on the Fox News Channel.)

As Marshall points out, though, making sure that states return only Republicans to Congress is also about controlling the White House. Republican lawmakers are purging from state election machinery members of their own party who refused to change the outcome of the 2020 election and give a victory to Trump. The former president has fed speculation that he still hopes to overturn the 2020 election, but Marshall looks forward: Is it really possible to think that in 2024, members of the new Trump party will protect the sanctity of any election that gives a victory to a Democratic candidate? If Republicans capture the House in 2022, will they agree to certify electoral votes for a Democrat? In 2020, even before the current remaking of the party in Trump’s image, 139 House Republicans contested them.

Trump is systematically going after leading members of the Republican Party, determined to remake it into his own organization. Several former senior White House officials told Ashley Parker and Josh Dawsey of the Washington Post that “[t]he defeated ex-president is propelled primarily by a thirst for retribution, an insatiable quest for the spotlight and a desire to establish and maintain total dominance and control over the Republican base.” Republican strategist Brendan Buck noted that Trump seems to relish fighting, rather than victory to achieve an end. “Usually,” Buck said, “a fight is the means to an end, but in this case fighting is the end.”

The Republicans are consolidating their control over the machinery of government in a way that indicates they intend to control the country regardless of what Americans actually want, putting Trump and his organization back in charge. Democrats have proposed the For the People Act (H.R. 1 and S. 1), which would start to restore a level playing field between the parties. The For the People Act would sideline the new voter suppression bills and make it easier to vote. It would end partisan gerrymandering and stop the flow of big money into elections permitted after the 2010 Citizens United decision.

But Republicans are determined to stop this measure. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is especially engaged in its obstruction. He has called it a “partisan takeover” that would “give Washington Democrats unprecedented control over 50 states’ election laws.” He recognizes that restoring a level electoral playing field would hamstring the Republicans’ ability to win elections. Defeating the act is McConnell’s top priority.

The story of how Republican leaders embraced voter suppression and gerrymandering starts back in the 1980s, though the mechanics of overturning a presidential election are new to 2020. Still, their undermining of our democratic system begs the question: Why are leading Republicans surrendering their party, and our nation, to a budding autocrat?.........."

I really don't get the fetish with wanting everything to be as bad as the Holocaust. Virtue signalling? Either way I think it's pretty tacky to say what's going on now is anything like the rise of the nazi party in Germany.

I think it's pretty tacky to ignore the similarities. I don't know that trump has the brains to be a real dictator, I think he just likes the attention.. But his most loyal supporters are straight up white-nationalists. They are still out there, just waiting for a fight. Shit, the proud boys were out in my hometown yesterday harassing people.

Somebody in my home town has been going around and putting up Trump 2020 signs for the last 5 months. People take them down, take them out of their yards, a week or two later they pop up again. These are the types we are dealing.

I’m curious what all the folks who can’t stop criticizing all of the US’s enemies for various reasons think about the ethnic cleansing happening in Palestine right now. Clearly we should invade Israel? Assassinate their leadership? At the very least impose an economic blockade, right?

It's almost nothing like that , except for all of the actual Nazis that consider themselves part of the right in this country .  I think it's the Nazis dude , thats why people bring up Germany and the Holocaust . It's also really hard to come up with kkk analogies , jokes and puns . I'm trying right now , got nothin though .
You could make an argument people overdo it but a Holocaust joke here and there seems appropriate to me .

I think there's an easy KKK joke:

The KKK was so bad that Hitler used the KKK and Jim Crow as a blueprint/inspiration for the holocaust!

BAHAHAHHHAAAAAA!

Maybe a half joke. It's not that funny.

In all seriousness though, I don't think the holocaust was the worst thing that ever happened. I mean, it's up there, and the murder of humans on an industrial scale is pretty shitty, but humanity has done much worse things out of sheer negligence. Or in retribution.

The only reason I said:

Is because I think it is a completely factual statement. You could make the same statement about almost any other years in history. Heck, I'm pretty sure the average person's life didn't change much between 1938 and 1940 either. Or 1944 and 1946. It's one of those platitudes that is so true that it is entirely meaningless.

It just happens that I picked two years on opposite sides of what seemed like a minor and insignificant election at the time, and then turned out to be way more important than people realized. Hindsight is 20/20.

It's a clear demonstration of who is in charge of the Republican Party. Donald Trump. People who though he was past tense were blind.

But speaking of Liz Chaney, it's funny how cancel culture is actually practiced by everyone with power, and is only opposed when somebody else is doing it.

I don’t think trump is in charge so much as the GOP leadership is once again struggling to pacify their more insane elements in order to cobble together any coalition that might win them back power. There’s always been an unstable relationship between corporate power and social conservatism in the GOP, and trump happened to come along as corporate power became “woke,” causing strife between the GOP’s true masters and their voter base.

Neither party’s base likes corporate power, so when a Bernie or a Trump comes along and refocuses the electorate on economic issues (obviously trump did his fair share of dog whistling bullshit), it causes issues for the donor class. Both figures are the most popular of their respective side, and yet both parties would gladly get rid of them if they could, but contradictions like these will only become more apparent as time goes on. I’m curious to see how each party handles it. The GOP is in worse shape, because democrats have no trouble making the case that they’re slightly better (thanks to trump), so they’ll have to make some serious changes. Or shit maybe they’ll just keep making voting illegal and that’ll be their solution. The Dems are on similarly shaky ground, with a base that increasingly wants nothing to do with corporate power in the power, and an exceedingly progressive agenda. But they don’t have to do anything about that so long as the GOP is the party of orange man.

You would praise the reincarnated zombie corpse of Hitler if he somehow managed to come back from the dead and criticize Trump.

That says more about you than it does about Trump.

Liz Cheney is going to lose her seat because she's a shameless warmonger, a hypocrite and a liar to boot. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that her father has corrupted her. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, as they say. People are waking up to that fact. It doesn't have much to do with Trump, other than him calling her out on it. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I like your first line. However you are 100% wrong that the reason she will lose her leadership position is because of her neoliberal warmongering. Both parties engage in that but the GOP publicly embraces it (except Trump who makes believe that he doesn't publicly). She will lose her leadership for exactly two reasons: she voted to impeach Trump and she called him out on causing the capital riots. If you think that Trump has little to do with this, explain how Trump himself has picked her successor. You do read the news right?
