Lol you hate them but have you ever fruited them that way? They're fun! It ain't all about yield :rr:

Don't fan, it's outdated misinformation, unnecessary, and counterintuitive to humidity... may be your whole issue... drying from fanning, overmisting to compensate... cakes are finicky and over responsive to changes in conditions IME... SGFC  (or humidity chamber) are designed to be left alone for the most part... pix would be tremendously helpful

The whole process is simplified on purpose to get a beginning user familiar with basic life cycle and process of growing mushrooms, e.g., ideal surface conditions, the conditions to trigger mushroom mycelium to fruit, as well as the processes that effect them. It's been working well for years and is much easier to digest than your advice of mist thoroughly, but not too thoroughly, don't bother fanning, just crack a lid, but don't crack it much because it might dry things out, etc.

SGFC are designed to be left alone except for misting when necessary and potentially fanning briefly after you mist. That's all this user seems to be doing (although he's not using a SGFC from what I can tell).

I'd really like to know what exactly is your experience with cakes?

Looks like bruising from misting to heavily and directly IMO... try to twist the spray nozzle to get as fine a mist as possible, spray above and away from the tub, allowing the mist to fall with gravity... allow evaporation to occur between mistings to stimulate pinning and avoid over-saturating the cakes... don't fan, if they show signs of insufficient FAE,  adjust the lid askew to increase air exchange slightly and gradually... want to find a balance where you're getting enough FAE  (really doesn't take much) and maintaining humidity while allowing evaporation to occur at an acceptable/ maintainable level...

Other than the bruising, they look pretty good to me!

Thanks Caps, exactly what I needed to hear. I've been misting directly, so I will change my direction on that! Thanks for the input!

Nah, dude. You just keep doing what you're doing because your cake looks awesome. Your fruits and cakes can bruise very easily from any number of things and this small bit isn't much to worry about. You could've bumped them earlier, they could be stressed from growing, maybe from the birthing process, or anything else. Certain humans bruise easy, perhaps your strain of genetics does as well?

Your cake is a solid block of healthy mycelium. You aren't going to kill it with a tiny bruise. We blend BRF cakes in sterile water and use them to inoculate grains. And they kill it.

Yes, the cakes can be stressed from misting too hard, but that just means mist lighter. You're not going to kill them from this. I've dropped full-size monotubs on the ground, cracked them in half, and they still fruited fine. You're not going to over saturate the cakes unless you have pooling water on them. You literally submerge them in water for 24 hours after the consolidation period. And I also mist fruits directly in my monotubs. They're 90% water. You're not going to ruin anything by getting moisture on mushrooms. No pooling water is the goal.

My guess is anything above caused it initially and then picking the big mushroom bruised those more. This happens all the time when I pick a lone mushroom in a cluster. I only did PF Tek once when I first started, but I got 23/24 jars 100% colonized without a contam. And I only followed RR's videos and advice in the forum. Here is a link to my earlier posts involving PF Tek. I likely ask tons of questions you may have so perhaps it's beneficial.

Hmmm... you don't feel it's typical in the presence of excess moisture?  :takingnotes:

No. I think it's more typical to stress, such as being hit too hard with misting, not added moisture levels brought by it. But AFAIK, there's a lot we don't know about oxidation, bluing, and the overall chemical reactions responsible.

Lvr,

Make sure your foil is curved downward into the perlite so the misted water doesn't pile up under the cake.

I did a trial run with plastic lids, in preparation for my first grain attempt  while I waited for some SFD to arrive in the mail. I dropped a small piece of agar from a cloned B+.I got home Friday night and after two weeks the jars looked like this almost all over. Sorry for the shitty pictures my phone has been abused.

so I shook them and now Sunday morning here they are, definitely white mycelium but my eyes might be missing something.. are the oats too wet?

They're a little moist IMO, and the mycelium looks wispy (almost like mold)...

well shit.. I don't like that.

Not sure what to do then I guess I'll let them keep going, and give them a good smell once I open them. I haven't smelt anything out of the ordinary yet. what else could I watch for?

I was thinking I'd leave them alone until this coming Friday at least

Did you shake them at 30% or anything before? Did it gradually colonize to that or just kind of suddenly do that? Don't smell mold. Maybe a sniff through the filter or something. That uncolonized chunk at the bottom left got colonized completely? How long did you sterilize?

I boiled these oats and then pcd at 15psi for 2 hours. To be honest I'm very new at all this and I'm just trying to learn the grain process a bit so if my agar works out I'm a little more ready.

So here's what I did. I'm waiting for discs to arrive so I had none to use. I boiled and PCd the oats then in a SAB dropped a piece of agar into each jar from a cloned fruit I got from my BRF to shoebox grow. I shook it and turnt the plastic lids back maybe 1/2-3/4 turn. It colonized gradually past 30% to that first picture and then I shook.

I only smell a strong earthy mushroom smell in the room, similiar to my first two grows and comparing to those time lines the mycelium is colonizing slightly slower in the grain jars compared to my oat jars.

I wasnt expecting any results at all and was surprised when I saw white. I do think the oats are a little too moist too and I will probably leave them in the fridge overnight next attempt.

here's a picture I just took, it does look wispy. Oh well I'll just let it go in the jar for a little longer at the least. I have ten SFDs now so hopefully I can get some decent agar going.

Shitty pictures aside I don't see anything that makes me say throw it away. If it makes it to 100% without grossness appearing then spawn em to shoeboxes.

Wait, what? The first picture is way beyond 30%. That's what you first shook? How many days between dropping agar in and that picture elapsed? That's very important. And how big was the wedge?

Another important thing you're leaving out are the steps after boiling and PCing. Did you fan dry them? Were they dry to the touch when they went into jars? Wet?

Do not leave them in the fridge. You will create more moisture from the temperature swings. Why would you do that at all anyway?

Yes they were dry and left very little visible moisture on a paper towel. I did notice some moisture against the glass once in the jars. Did not fan dry I let them sit covered with paper towel for close to 24 hours.

The agar wedge was small, not quite rice grain size and it was 1 week before I noticed anything at all in the jar, and then another week to the point of the first picture. I was out of town for a few days and that's why it wasn't shook at 30%

Not sure why I would do that either, there's a lot of information out there and I'm not sure what's good and what's not. I would stick with brf to shoeboxes but my B+ has run out and it's the only one of four different syringes I've been able to get to colonize so just working with what I have before I get a new order of all B+ syringes hah..

I tried a few but they didn't have pictures or proper explanation, so I gave up on trying to figure it out until I saw it in the discussion thread...
