After watching this video on youtube



And seeing that this guy obviously has a simple, but commercial setup, I have everything in place.

He wouldn't be doing this if it didn't work. Also, I'm going to try sawdust instead of grain spawn.

3-40 pound bags of 100% hardwood pellets.
5.5 pounds of white oyster sawdust spawn on the way
and my new "secret tek"- GROCERY STORE BAGS.


That's right folks. Instead of paying $1 each for filter patch bags, I'm going to load up the
shopping bags, tie them off, and then stack them inside to colonize.


HEre's what I'm going to do. " " THE TEK"


Hydrate hardwood pellets with about 50% water 50% pellets in a big plastic tub. Once proper moisture ratio is reached, I'm simply going to load up the sawdust inoculated in layers, or mixed, into the brown plastic grocery store bags. Simple tie them off, but not too tight so air can get in. And then just wait. Either that, or tie them tight, and poke holes.



The theory is that this works because there is no grain, no supplements, just 100% wood, so contams don't have a chance to take over before the aggressive oysters do.



If this works, I can see it being a very ideal setup to grow commercially.

Considering I would not have to keep buying spawn, I could just use one colonized block to make tons more, and repeat, over and over.

The only cost is time, labor, and the pellets- which are $6 a bag here.

In about a month I'm going to come back with the results and pictures. I can't wait. I think it's going to work.

I pasteurize my fuel pellets in big pp5 totes. Then when it’s cooled I dump in my spawn and mix it with a paint mixer in my electric drill. Then I use those cheap ass roll bags like the one used for grocery store produce with a bottomless scoop. Then tie a knot or zip tie and you’re set.

Thanks for the input. And yes I did notice that. But he's also adding grain which adds higher chance of contams, right?. I figure by using sawdust I can get away with using less.

Any thoughts?

Also check out straw pellets or “ farm residue pellets”or “ straw residue pellets”. Residue is a fancy way of saying farm waste, so residue pellets are made from straw and grain waist. SAVE THE TREES

Yeah I also use a higher spawn ratio but I sell well enough to get away with it.

so you mean like straw mixxed with animals droppings and compressed into pellets? wait do you mean "grain waste" mixxed with straw?




I did a bale of straw and it's heavy, messy, annoying, and well, much more labor intensive. Obviously I'm going to lazy route and I may end up failing miserably.

$14/40lb whole oats + 4.50$/40lbs fuel pellets= roughly 80lbs of oysters assuming 100% BE.
80lbs at 6$ a pound is 480$. And at 8$/lb is 640$. The higher spawn ratio is worth it in my opinion.

Nah it’s all agricultural straw and other grain/grass waste that ground up and pelletized. No poop. It’s just like using straw but it has the same conveniences as hwfp.

That makes perfect sense.

So do you sterilize jars or bags of oats, and inoculate in a hepa filtered room, and then use that for the hardwood pelletS?

do you have a link to your tek?

That's my main problem is I do have a pressure cooker, but I don't have a flowhood or cleanroom.

the super high spawn ratio he's using makes it viable. But you could use less spawn with properly pasteurized/sterilized substrate and yield the same, if not better results. That is if I'm reading this correctly.

You can also do bags in an SAB if you really wanted to. A bit of a PITA to load your SAB, but it can be done.

You could do it in a glove box. I start with making a clean oyster Petri in my glove box/ flowhood( I need a new one). Then I make blenderless LI with a 2oz syringe, it’s plently for 5 gallons of spawn. Then just pasteurize your bulk sub and mix in the pawn when it’s cooled. A paint mixer is almost a must. Than u scoop and bag it at the same time with my bottomless scoop.

A larger SAB, and then you load it thru the bottom and let the air resettle before you open your bags up. probably wipe the outsides of your bags with an iso paper towel before inoculation as well. just to cover your bases.

But still, it'd be easier to knock up filter patch bags in an SAB vs those big ass bags he's using in the videos.

Higher spawn rate allows me to spawn to bulk in open air with very little labor. And I also don’t need to buy filterpatch bags

Thanks guys. I'm obviously new and had no idea a still air box even existed or how it worked.


That means that I can now sterilize some grain, and use the still air box to make clean spawn. Yay!

Yeah, I've been here much longer than that. And back in the day that didn't exist( to my knowledge). It was all about the "glove box" or a flowhood.


But to be honest, I've never grown mushrooms, I only used to come here to goof off in the pub or OTD, and also mess around in other forums like Mushroom Hunting., but never cultivation!


Now I'm hooked lol

I'm not doing anything on a commercial scale but I'm having success spawning grain at a high rate to wood fuel pellets with nothing but cold water in a sealed bag.  Now that I've verified success with the tek I'm going to work on how far back I can cut the grains and still get reliable colonization.

Working with 3015 oyster FWIW.

Yeah, higher spawn rates are the way to go! Oysters are so aggressive you can get away with quite a bit. Im gonna have to try a non pasteurized batch, cause if I can cut that out of the process then why not right? Less work and more money saved:shrug:

I’m not sure what I’m working with. I’m currently using wild yellow and white oyster from my local Michigan woods and whatever strain is used for the “back to the roots” grow kits.

exactly. You'd have to cut out any supplements though, which is why I think if you don't pasteurize/sterilize it, you have to use 100% wood, except of course, the spawn you use.

That is awesome. What kinds of bags do you use. How do you hydrate your pellets. What is your general tek?

so I think you might be doing too much,( and I'm about to try it myself) you can cut out the lime and the boiling water.

It's worth a shot!

I can't wait till my spawn comes in the mail to get started.

At least with your way there is a much higher sucess rate I would think.

But if you're not supplementing, I don't see the need for the lime.

The lime is just another added defense, I’m not even sure if it’s needed because plenty of people do cold water/ lime pasteurization with straw and it works just fine.
