HEPA blower matching question
    #25850150 -

Ok, so I've bought a HEPA filter that has these specs:

CamFil 855023624 - 22.75"x41.75" WG 0.40" 550cfm

According to my math I need a fan that will push at least 659.5cfm @ WG 0.60" (0.40" for HEPA + 0.20" for pre-filter)

I'm looking at either the Dayton 1TDT5 which pushes 710cfm @ WG 0.60" (~107cfm from HEPA) or the Dayton 1TDU1 which pushes 725cfm @ WG 0.60" (~110cfm from HEPA)

They're both a little over powered, but I figured its better to have the flow a little stronger than too weak.

My question is, will these blowers match my HEPA? I'd ideally like to be able to use the 1TDT5 because its a bit cheaper. But I want to double check my math here before I press the buy button.

Many thanks!

A little something to chew on...you will not be able to get the full life out of the hepa filter if you match it to a new filters SP. The filters are good until they are double the starting SP, called recommended final pressure drop. As the filter loads up over time the SP increases. Ideally you would buy a fan that pushes 657 cfm at 1" SP since this is double the starting SP + your prefilter. Then you can wire it on low/med or block the intake to get your 657 cfm at 0.6" and then as it loads up change the amount blocked or wire it up to the next speed.

You can use a magnehelic gauge to monitor your filters SP.

Oh, thats a really good tip. Thank you! I didn't think about that.

Do most blower fans come with the option to wire them to a lower speed? It looks like all the Daytons just have one speed that varies in relation to SP. If I get the biggest one they make, the 1TDU2 (1080cfm @ 0.60" &  1000cfm@ 1"), I could block the intake, but it doesn't look like I could wire in a speed control.

Any recommendation on another brand that I could use with speed control?

You don't want to use a speed controller, unless it is has an ECM motor or a few other special types which are pricey. I damn near burned my new-to-me blower up the other day using a speed controller while testing it out. Worked fine with a previous blower but apparently it's not universal. It's easy to partially block the intake with some Gorilla duct tape.

So just to be clear, if I match my 22.75"x41.75" (550CFM 0.40" WG) HEPA with the Dayton 1TDU2 that does 1080cfm @ 0.60" &  1000cfm @ 1" and cover the intake to slow it down to 100cfm coming out the filter I'll be all set? Then as my filter clogs over time I'll be able to uncover the intake to account for the higher static pressure?

Yea that will do you good. I like the Gorilla tape because it's easy to remove as you need to. You can just peel one strip off or cut it out or whatever. You'll just need to go with the old lighter test to get it dialed in. Probably start about half taped up or so and peel a strip or two off with testing. If you just tape a piece of cardboard it might come loose and make a bad thing happen.

How did you mount your blower to your flow hood box? I see the 1TDU2 doesn't have any flange to attach as some of the other models do.

I am still finding myself concerned that the 1TDU2 will be far too powerful for this panel. How would I go about figuring out how much cfm I'd get if I don't block off the fan intake?

I did some math and the figure I came to was about 163.7fpm. But I can't tell if that number is totally wrong! From what I've read if 163.7fpm is right that is still a workable speed before blocking the intake to lower it to 100fpm.

edit: changed cfm to fpm

I think the flow coming out of the front is supposed to come out at 100 fpm. The fan doesnt need to be pushing at 100 cfm.

He meant FPM (feet per minute).

Yes it would be 164 FPM if you dont block the intake. That's why you partially block the intake while the filter is new  You want about 100-110fpm out of the filter face.

Dont forget to use install a magnehelic if you wanna be a super cool dude with big nipples like me. A 1" range one like mine will be perfect for you, it's the Magnehelic 2001 model. You can score them used/new on ebay for $30-$50. Should come with 2 plugs and 2 hose barbs. If it doesnt come with fittings they are 1/8NPT threads so 2 of 1/8 npt plugs and 2 of 1/8 npt x 1/4" hose barbs.

There's really no point to a manometer. If you're loosing flow you'll notice. Besides it doesn't tell you your FPM airspeed out the front. Just check with a lighter now and then

There is plenty of reason to use a manometer/magnehelic. Such as telling when your filter is ready for the trash and if there are any leaks. Not the only way obviously. But it also looks cool and is cheap. You can also use it to make sure your airflow is where you want it when you first set it up because it will have a certain static pressure at a certain speed. So if you are hitting that SP then you know you have the right air speed.

So I got the Dayton 5TCJ3 supports and they don't fit the bottom of the blower as I thought they would. For all of you with this blower, how did you mount it to your flow hood cabinet?

I found a custom bracket mount made of angle iron sold by Fungi Perfecti, but its like $55 + $20 shipping, really steep if you ask me (just like all of their products). They call the 1TDU2 blower "EAFB2" and the custom bracket "EAFB2-B".

That is pretty shitty that they told you it would fit and doesn't. I called Grainger recently and was able to get patched through to an "expert" or some such shit since the lady that answered didn't know anything about anything. Maybe call them back up and ask to talk to an expert on the blower fans and explain. They are the manufacturer, there is no such thing as dayton any longer, grainger bought them years back. So they should know how to mount their own damn fan, damn. That's lame.

Just use some silicone or make a flange with some foil tape and L brackets to hold it

Re: HEPA blower matching question [Re: bodhisatta]
    #25866623 -

Yea it would be pretty easy to get some 6" L brackets from the hardware store and use self drilling sheet metal screws with washers to mount to the side of the blower where it doesn't interfere with the wheel. Make sure to shake out any metal fragments before you mount it, you don't want those to potentially bounce around in your plenum. Then you can use foil tape to seal the gap where it sits over the hole in your plenum top, or expanding can of foam (blue lid) would make a better seal, the tape could not seal up well under pressure over time.

Re: HEPA blower matching question [Re: sandman420]

Alright! So I have some updates here. I've made a box out of 3/4" red oak vaneer ply and mounted the brackets to my blower using self drilling metal screws. Right now I'm waiting for my clear poly coat to dry before I mount the blower.

I built a frame in the box the HEPA will be seated against and siliconed to, and I'm going to silicone all the internal seams before I fit the filter. I got the fit almost perfect. There is about 1/8" of play vertically and horizontally its about 1/32".

My plan for the pre-filter is to build a box around the blower and use a 14"x14" pre-filter in one of the sides. I'm not really sure the best way to go about doing this... do you guys have any tips or thoughts before I start?

I was thinking maaaaybe I could get around making a pre-filter box by just making a plywood "plate" with the pre-filter attached and then using industrial strength velcro to attach it directly over the air intake. But then I noticed there are quite a few little holes all over the blower housing. I'd really like as much of the incoming air to go through my pre-filter as possible as I'll be using this thing in my garage and I'd like to keep all the dust particulate out of my nice HEPA. If any of you have any tips about getting around building a separate box on top that would also be super helpful.

Here are some photos of what I've got going on so far:

That's a 2 x 4 filter, yeah. I think you'll want a bigger prefilter and pre filter housing box. Or go with that and put two prefilters on it.

i built my own 2 x 4 hood and it was not achieving laminar flow at first. I called some folks and did some reading and found that i wasn't allowing enough air through the prefilter and effectingly choking the blower. I then cut the back side of the prefilter housing out and duct taped another (i forget the size but it was around the size you are planning on) filter to the back.

I talked to the folks at perfecti and they said they use huge prefilters on their 2 x 4 hoods. I think they said 25 x 16 (don't quote me on that) or something close.

I built my box around the blower and  built a backing (just like you did for the hepa) that the prefilter sets down on. Then i built a little rectangular frame with weather stripping on it that sets down on the prefilter and screws tightly into place.

I don't totally understand... Was the prefilter blocking too much air so you weren't getting laminar flow? I know this blower is quite a bit overpowered for my HEPA + prefilter, so I'm not too worried about reaching velocity. I did quite a bit of research matching performance curves etc before pulling the trigger on it. If anything I'm worried about it being too powerful.

And as far as prefilter size goes, did the FP people say they used a large prefilter to provide bigger surface area for the blower to pull from?

I bought a 14"x14" prefilter as I thought that would be an appropriate size to fit into one of the sides of the prefilter box I'm planning on making. Is there any danger of that being too small?

Sorry if i wasn't clear. Yes, the pre filter was only allowing s much air through and effectivly limiting the amount that was allowed through the blower. FP advised me to take the pre filter off and do a laminar flow check. I did so and it tested well. I tried to find the email from them earlier so that i could tell you the exact filter size that they recommended but i can't find it.

I'm done with my sterile session now so i'll go check the size of my pre filter and let you know what i had originally put on there and found to be too small.

So, my pre filter is 20 X 16. I'm no expert on laminar flow. I'm just relaying a little information. I ran it with that filter and wasn't achieving flow, talked to FP about what setting they wire the blower on (1/2 horse 4 speed blower) and what size their prefilter was, and found that i need to allow more prefiltered air in to achieve laminar flow. So, i cut the back of the filter housing out and literally duct taped another filter to it (14 x 14). After making said changes i achieved laminar flow.

You could call FP and ask what size they use.

I think you want your prefilter to run approx. in the 300 fpm area. 800cfm (2x4 filter at 100 fpm) through 14x14 is something like 690 fpm so that is too small. I like to build the prefilter box so that it has an open top and the box is sized that a filter just sits on the top. The force of the air going through it holds it down really good. Just figure your prefilter size and build the box to fit.

So you need about 400 square inches of surface area for your prefilter to get a proper velocity out of it. For example a 20x20 or 18x24 would do you good.

You can also size the box so that the inside is just a 1/4" bigger than the prefilter outside size, so that the filter sits inside the top of the box, sitting on a little strip of 1" wide plywood that goes around the inside 1" from the top, like a flange. Instead of just sitting right on top.

That's my plan! I am going to cut a 1/2" strip of plywood and make a little frame inset along that top edge at the depth of my prefilter. I was also thinking I could rabbit the top edge, but I don't trust myself to do that totally evenly around the whole box.

Yea there's really no need to get fancy with rabbets. You can just buy some "firring strips" also, it's a 1x2 board at home depot etc...if you don;t feel like ripping pita 1/2 strips on the table saw haha. Always kinda sketch ripping thin stuff. Then just screw em to the side with appropriate screws, or even from the outside with inappropriate screws with some protrusion inside.

I'm sure you know this but just to make sure, take care to clean everything really well before you run her with the hepa in. Sawdust and all other general labor filth are tough on the filter. I ran my blower with the prefilter on while getting jiggy with a little brush. Obviously, i did my best to clean things up after constructing the box but it was recommended to me to go the extra mile.

That's a good tip. These filters are way way more fragile than say a HEPA filter for a small room air filter. It's seemingly a totally different material. Debris bouncing around against the backside isn't good for it.

I just picked up a 16"x25" prefilter that should do the trick.

Another question - I'm going to seal the seams of my main HEPA box with silicone caulk. Should I seal my prefilter box as well?

Yea I put a bead of silicone around where the prefilter box touches the main box, and on the edges where it screws together.

I would. the whole idea is to be totally sure that the only thing that makes it through to your hepa is air going through the filter. So, why not?

Sounds good! I'll silicone all of it. I thought it would probably be a good idea, but another step on the way to finishing this thing! I'm really excited to get it done so I'm feeling a bit impatient with all the steps plus drying time. 🙃

Careful with those damn minipleat filters I just fucked one of mine up really bad. They are really fragile if you bend the screen up. You can't really seal up damaged areas worth a shit on minipleats because of the screen and how tight the pleats are together. Just be careful hah.

Hahahaha, yeah I really could've used pocket holes on this guy. A friend of mine was working on a desk at my place using his pocket hole jig while I was building this, but it didn't occur to me I could do it that way until I was already about 75% finished. 🙃

How did you damage your filter? I just noticed the screen on the front could be pushed up against the minipleats and if pushed hard enough it could do some damage...

I've damaged my filter in quite a few ways. the worse was when i accidentally knocked over a stack of twenty petris and jammed my fingers into the filter trying to catch them.

Looking good man. Nice Job

I don't really know if I damaged it or I just didn't notice it until after I finished the build and it was shipping/storage damage. It was just a lightly dented area where the screen was mashed into the filter a little bit. Like someone was walking next to the box and accidentally kicked it slightly or something...But you can feel the air blowing strongly from that area. It was a new build that was replacing an older unit...Bah. Got a new filter on order, waiting on it to be built.

Whelp. The results are in! All is working well, however it does seem the blower is a bit over sized for my filter (which I already knew). The lighter nearly blows out, but is still lit (barely). I'm thinking I might clamp a small piece of plywood over the intake to slow it down a little. Thoughts? I know a flowhood is supposed to just bend the lighter over, would there be any issues if I were to use it as is, other than blowing my petris away?

In other news... my little lab room is starting to come together!

Excellent work, looks perfect on the lighter. I just lay a piece of cardboard on top of the prefilter for final tweak of airflow because you can move it around to block off more or less easily. You're cooking with fire now baby!
