HEPA thickness?
    #25849414 -

I've been researching how to build a flow hood and I have a question about the thickness of HEPA filters. It seems there are two thicknesses of 24"x24" HEPAs, 12" and 6". I read an old post from RR who said the 12" units are used for ventilation purposes of clean rooms while 6" are used for flow hoods.

Is there really any difference in use between a 12" and 6" HEPA when making a flow hood? I know a hood with a 12" filter would need to be quite a bit deeper to account for the plenum, but really do they function differently in any way?

I've been hunting for a 24"x24"x5.88" HEPA high and low and all I come up with are 24"x24"x11.5". Except on the Fungi Perfecti site which has the 5.88". The next size up, 24"x48"x6" seem to be more readily avaliable on ebay as well, but none of those have metal filter fronts.

Any thoughts on this one guys?

Doesn't matter so long as it produces laminar flow. Mines 24x24x11.5 but it produces laminar flow at 80-120fpm flow. It can handle 500+fpm but it's no longer laminar at those speeds

Simply send the company that makes the filter a email if you're concerned
Quote:
Your filter is rated 500 FPM  ( 2000 CFM ) @ 1.6” WG.  The filter is scanned test @ 100 FPM as that’s the capacity of the test instrument.  Running the filter at 100 FPM will give you laminar flow below the filter.

Laminar flow is when the air flow  is 90FPM +/-  20%.  ( 72FPM to 108 FPM ).

for some reason the 24 x 24 x 5.875 99.99 BioMax has gone off ebay since last I checked but here's a sick deal on a 30x30 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Filter-HEPA99-99-Prtcl-30x30x5-875-KOCH-H23G3X1/273449220941? You might contact them and ask about them relisting the 24 x 24 x 5.875 99.99% filter also, but it was the same price or more if I remember right.

These filters drop ship directly from the manufacturer and I'm pretty sure through freight, shipping included. Beware old stock filters. Beware shipping through UPS/FedEx, only freight shipping is acceptable for these sensitive filters.

6" and 12" filters actually have the same filter thickness, given same filter model type. The actual fitters are roughly 1/4" thick and are folded into an accordion to fill the frame. So a 12" thick filter just has a lot more surface area of filter in it but it's still the same thickness of media. Behold my paint masterpiece which roughly illustrates this.

So the 12" thick filters are designed for higher flow and air speeds because there is more surface area for the air to move through. They are intended for filtering air that enters clean rooms among other things, but they can be used for a flow hood too if you are so inclined.
