Reminds me of the time that somebody showed me a graph of the visual magnitude of Neptune versus CO2 concentration and complained about how environmentalists were trying to tell people that the temperature on Neptune was rising as a result of global warming.  :shake:

trick (and boring) retorts fail at the constant use of optimism, and realism,...basically all the things i keep saying...but even though yes, there is no real "stop all production, to SAVE THE PLANET!" kind of (dumb) scenario people keep clamoring about [seemingly they want to see everyone huddle together, and literally become 'your huddled masses']....there is the cool C02 siphoning tech being worked on - turns it into calcium bicarbonate.

1) rain is distilled water
2) ocean acidification is caused primarily by an abundance of CO2 in the atmosphere. CO2 reacts with water yielding carbonic acid.

We're going to have Artificial intelligence within the next 40 years. That's the thing we should be worried about. I have a feeling that the climate change is real but bull shit at the same time. I think we're going to slowly fix that problem.  A.I on the other hand is probably going to destroy us.

not appreciably, afaik, although Ag runoff does contribute to dinoflagellate blooms (red tide)  which can be quite harmful to coastal sea life.  I'm not sure if florida is still in the grip of their historic, persistent red tide but it was news last year.  That's a major danger of Ag runoff.  There have been articles about PCBs concentrating in the deepest parts of the ocean recently.  Another example of runoff pollution, though not really agricultural in nature.

tions”. However, the effect of acidification to the extent expected on
year 2100 on calcification by juveniles and larvae was not statistically
significant (Fig. 2 in Dupont et al.). Another recent example (Gazeau
et al., 2010) showed that there was no significant effect of a 0.25e0.34
pH unit decrease on hatching and mortality rates of planktonic blue
mussel larvae prior to settlement and that significant effects (24%
lower hatching rates) appeared only when pH was reduced by 0.5
units, with size decreasing significantly by 6% to 12% with declining
pH. Yet, in the discussion version of the manuscript, Gazeau et al.
(2010) conclude that “decreases of hatching rates and shell growth
suggest a negative impact of ocean acidification on the future survival of
bivalve populations potentially leading to significant ecological and
economical losses”. Similarly, Arnold et al. (2009) conclude that
“despite there being no observed effect on survival, carapace length, or
zoeal progression, ocean acidification related (indirect) disruption of
calcification and carapace mass might still adversely affect the
competitive fitness and recruitment success of larval lobsters with
serious consequences for population dynamics and marine ecosystem
function”. While all of these papers do contain important, useful
results worth publishing, reviewers and editors should ensure that
conclusions are supported by the results presented

im of the mind to pay attention to the house that is on fire right now and not one that may burn in the future, the everyday pollution is building up at an alarming rate, even earth orbit is getting trashed and many of those satellites contain one of the worst poisons ever developed by man, hydrazine, so we are getting pretty good at this pollution thing, and there seems to be no slowing down

its good to have balanced perspective, carbon dioxide is a natural part of the environment that is beneficial to life, millions of tons per year of man made poisons are not

CO2 is beneficial and required, however Earth's natural systems--most natural systems for that matter--depend on gradients.  When concentrations get out of whack then that affects the gradients that drives the natural processes.  That is the issue with the CO2.  There are so many feedback loops in nature that it's tough to accurately predict how such a dramatic increase in CO2 levels will affect all of them so the idea is to limit that as much as possible.  CO2 does X to Y in Z time but what it just did to Y affects A in a different timeframe, which in turn affects B in yet another different time frame... you get the idea.

Dealing with existential risk is not one our species' best traits.  Someone earlier commented about AI.  Yes, AI is an existential risk that we are also largely ignoring...but that does not mean that what we are doing to the planet is any less severe and should be pushed to the side to deal with AI.  Both have the ability to destroy our species, it's not one or the other.  We are a remarkably resilient species and can actually find solutions to these problems and ways to live with their effects, but at what cost to current life?

That's not quite how it works.  It's not the heat capacity of CO2 that is the link between CO2 and warming.  It's the specific wavelengths of light that CO2 effectively blocks.  The Earth emits what is termed blackbody radiation from the sun, basically its the heat coming off of the Earth's surface due to solar heating.  Several substances in our atmosphere cause blackbody radiation to be contained within our atmosphere instead of allowing that radiation to emit into space.  This trapping of blackbody radiation is what causes the warming.  The largest contributor out of all these substances is good old water.  Not only is our atmosphere quite saturated with water but it also blocks quite a few different wavelengths of light.  The second largest is CO2.

Now when we start talking about CO2, there was already CO2 in the atmosphere for as long as humans existed but it is the concentration of this CO2 now that is causing the issue.  Imagine a clear glass filled only a 1/4 way full of black ink...then you shine a light at it from the side.  A 1/4 of that light doesn't penetrate (my metaphor for blackbody radiation, IRL the "ink" causes the radiation gets bounced back to Earth) but 3/4 of the light goes through the glass.  That's how it was for a very long time up until the industrial revolution.  Now fill up that cup all the way with black ink: no light penetrates.  That's how it is now.

Present day.  We are pretty much at blackbody saturation for CO2 in our atmosphere so that metaphorical glass is quite full.  We can only add so much more to the cup before each addition becomes negligible.  Other cups that are not so full that block blackbody radiation are methane and nitrous oxides.  Methane is getting to saturation but is not really there yet...unfortunately increases in warming and melting arctic permafrost releases trapped methane deposits into the atmosphere (these are called methane clathrates).  Increases in natural gas extraction and production also increases methane in the atmosphere, having a greater impact than CO2 currently does. 

The good news is the metaphorical cup sizes are all different.  Water's cup would be huge and quite full of black ink (biggest impact/adding more is negligible).  CO2's cup is quite large as well and is also quite full (bigger impact but we're at the point where adding more isn't going to block that much more radiation, like water).  Methane's cup is smaller than CO2's and getting fuller (big impact and adding more is going to block more radiation).  NO's cup is the smallest and not very full (decent impact and adding more will block significantly more radiation). 

This is not so much to say we shouldn't keep trying to limit CO2 production as increasing concentrations of anything in the natural system is bound to throw off all sorts of gradients.  However when we specifically talk about pollutants and their warming effect, we're already over the hump on CO2...it's time to focus on other pollutants.

That metaphor doesn't really work that well though.  The atmosphere isn't at all like a glass, in the sense that you're not just filling it with different kinds of gasses and then just having it sit there.  If you spit big plumes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at some point in the past then it doesn't just sit there at the mercy of whatever forces cause it to mix with everything else.  The problem with carbon dioxide emissions is that they constantly drive the concentration of carbon dioxide to such a high level and that the equilibrium of the environment of Earth does depend very intimately on the composition of the atmosphere.  Methane is something that people should be worried about too, but that's in very large part on account of the fact that constantly forcing the carbon dioxide content to such a high level has raised the average (i.e. mean) global temperature and that pockets of methane that were trapped by ice are being exposed to the atmosphere in pretty dramatic episodes that release a lot of methane all at once.

This crater, incidentally, is the result of permafrost melt.

a: there will be a cost to human life is we can't power the economic engine that feeds people across the globe [with how large and interconnected everything is].

b: we need production, and we need surplus so that we can, again, power the engine that supplies so many on the periphery of civilization, the rural, and the metropolitan alike, as well.

c: we can remove C02 when and where required, and process it down into either recyclable or harmless compounds; given the appropriate advances in technology.

d: nuclear is our best bet to supply enough energy with the least damage to the environment, but also comes with it's own risks: "green" energy can barely get off the ground with enough production to stabilize [and normalize] it's cost; as such it is not cost-effective; it doesn't account for the operation of the complex system of the approach socium we are incurring through a rampant international capitalism.

I was trying to go with simplicity but I should've used a graph (and I stand corrected on N20 being a small cup, it would be a pretty large one): 



I still think the glass metaphor holds...glass and light are easy ways to illustrate the concept of flux.  Granted it is more complicated than that, but I did say a little in that post and the one before it that there's a great deal in feedback loops and concentration gradients that can and are affected.  In no way am I saying that CO2 from ages ago stays in the atmosphere.  I was trying to get across that concentrations in the past were, off the top of my head, ~200 ppm?  Now we're double that or even further?  Given the placement that CO2 absorbs on the blackbody spectrum, there's still a ways to go but there is much more a saturation effect than there is with the other gases (methane, N20).  That's where I was trying to go with the cups...

I agree that increases in CO2 is a forcing mechanism, but so are the other greenhouse gases...increases of which could potentially have a greater forcing effect than that of increases in CO2.  Such forcing effects from these gases absorbing that blackbody radiation then drives water vapor into the atmosphere that acts as the largest warming contributor (due to its absorption of blackbody radiation)...but water vapor is purely a feedback response from the increased forcing mechanisms of CO2, methane, and N20.  The warming is still due to the inability of that blackbody radiation to transfer out into space.  If radiation can't escape, it can't escape...much light light through a cup.

I totally agree with needing to keep up our standard of living (and increasing the standard of living in developing countries), but I disagree with you on the green energy and certain costs.  Perhaps that was a valid view a decade ago but the landscape has changed immensely. 

Costs have actually been decreasing primarily in the wind and solar spaces while coal costs have become increasingly unprofitable.  The United States in particular has been increasing reliance on natural gas and the most recent technological revolution in that space has made it fairly cheap.  But developing countries are still overly reliant on coal.  As green energy costs continue to drop and storage technology advances, expect the developing country cost-benefit analysis to tip towards the green energy spectrum.

Removing and processing CO2 is not very straightforward and current methods are very costly; the "given appropriate advances in technology" argument is just as valid for green energy storage.  It's primarily the green energy storage problem and the on-demand aspect that keeps us reliant on fossil fuels, not so much the cost anymore.  Research is progressing in the green energy storage area but it does take time/money/subsidies/etc just like the other energy industries and their technological advancements.  There's no reason it should not be a priority.  We can get more than enough energy from green sources, and eventually cheaply...but they're not on-demand, and  until storage technology matures that's why we do need something like nuclear to bridge that gap.  However nuclear is very expensive and unfortunately the high profile accidents of the 20th century has caused research in that field to not be where it should in regards to safety and regulations.

It is the electromagnetic (thermal) radiation that all matter emits.

Edit: sorry I should be a little more specific in regards to our conversation.  Earth absorbs all the energy it that hits it from the sun, in turn it releases radiation (blackbody radiation) based on it's temperature.  Hotter objects give off more blackbody radiation.
