Car issue post head gasket change

Ok so 2008 elantra..originally car was overheating. Mechanic fixed this by replacing some bad hoses, it was leaking coolant, but the car still was not running correctly. He discovered the head gasket was blown. Replaced it, car is running...almost. Its now doing this weird thing when you drive it, it will start revving up without giving it gas, like a stuck throttle, it would start accelerating slowly without giving it any gas. It would also idle at a high RPM, like around 2k. I have adjusted the screw on the throttle body to idle at just above 500 RPM and it now runs pretty well, but when I drive it for a bit and park it, when I put it in park, it will rev up again to over 2k until I turn it off. I have cleaned inside the throttle body thoroughly so its not gunked up.
Check engine code is P0016. Ive replaced the cam shaft position sensor and I just ordered the crankshaft position sensor. Would these have anything to do with what seems to be a throttle issue or is something completely different, or possibly a couople seperate issues like throttle and timing belt?
Im not a mechanic so please talk to me like I have no idea what Im doing under the hood...because I dont.

Sounds like you know plenty.
Try driving less and saving car. Sounds like a rice burner. Kids drive those too much. Sad thing is I want a subaru. That or just go for a truck. Used trucks in good shape are hard to find.

My first suspect would be a vacuum leak, especially since dude tore apart the top end. Should have a code though if it's taking in un metered air as that will throw off the air fuel mixture.
If it's a reputable shop or mechanic they'll fix their mistakes for free since you payed for a repaired vehicle. If their shady they'll charge you and say it's unrelated to their repairs which could be the case.

Family machanic used to help me. Going to a service sooner or later it's gonna need a lot of work if the body isn't trashed.

Just looked up that p0016 code. It's not guaranted the cam sensor is bad, it means the sensor is working outside of specified range. The sensor could be bad, the wires could be damaged, and connector could be damaged.
I'm willing to bet though you got overhead cams and this code is also related to the timing belt which the mechanic would have to remove and reinstall properly after putting the head back on.
Sorry about my last post but after reading and thinking about it he prob didn't set the timing belt properly. My best guess.

hes probablynright bout timing but if not Check your o2 sensors theyre probably bad and theyre wat control fuel air mixture. On honda its sometimes the coil that does that 2 .

Thanks guys. So if the engine code is related to a timing issue, would that be causing the odd throttle issue, seems like it could?

Absolutely would mess with throttle. If it's advanced it runs faster, retarded runs slower. And the whole time the computer is trying to correct something it can't. Since its post repair it's not likely coil or o2 sensor, it's most likely the mechanic messed up.

Thanks again everyone. Im planning on taking it to a different mechanic today. By the sounds of it, its in to the realm of beyond my expertise.
