Fruits Turned Black Overnight, What Happened?
    #25845514 - 03/01/19 10:23 AM (5 years, 1 month ago)

I've had trouble with this tub since I started fruiting conditions, but finally got pins and things were starting to look up

I checked the bin last night and all was fine, woke up the morning to a vinegary smell in the house and my fruits all black. Here's some before and after pics

What the fuck happened in 9 hours?!

That's nuts. A few quick notes- your sub looks super thin, like barely a 1/2", the walls and sub look incredibly dry. Did you reclose the hole after the before photo? Wondering if  they aborted from too dry, like bone dry. Just a thought. Looks more blue than black, like  they got stressed. Happening all at once, gonna say environment conditions

That's what I was assuming.  I don't see any other significant discolorations / growth other than what's on the actual fruit.  Especially given what looks to be bruising.

edit: Any way we can see the bottom of the tub?  If there's something infecting the mycelium you may have a better chance spotting something underneath.  Or under a piece of the mycelium? (i see the bottom won't be transparent)

As might be apparent, this is my first bulk grow. I've made some mistakes, mostly impatience.

I went from BRF cakes and lost a few on the way, the sub is thin because of this. It's even sitting on a small oven tray to get it closer to the holes I drilled prior to actually putting sub in.

I thought I saw some cobweb...hit it with a qtip and H202 and it dissolved. So I diluted H202 in a spray bottle and hit the whole sub for precaution.

The H202 was food grade, 35%... the stuff I had read about using was at 3%.  I then read it best not to use it at all....impatience.  In any case, it took off the top layer of myc. I thought I killed it.

Then I saw pins forming, and then more forming... and I thought maybe it had come back. Pins were growing...one day I noticed a slowing of growth...the next morning I came it to the smell of vinegar and what is pictured above.

I'm thinking the myc was weakened by the strong H202... something took hold?

I immediately put the whole tub in a garbage bag and set it outside in the snow. I'm scared to open it up anywhere inside... but I'm as curious as y'all to see what it looks like.

Now, for my next question.

The tub above was Maz and colonized and grew very fast. I have another tub of Nepals, nocced up 10 days before the Maz and went into the tub a week after. Very slow.

As I mentioned before...impatience. The cobweb idea really started with the Nepal tub, it was looking good when I first opened it after incubating for 6 days...and started looking increasingly worse after that.

I was afraid the cobweb would get in the room...so I threw this one in a garbage bag in the snow.  Curiosity got the best of me a few days later...the heat collected and trapped from the black garbage bag had a lot of moisture built up inside the tub...and the myc looked healthier.

It looked dry...so I hit it with a spray...fanned it and put a thin layer of verm across the top and sprayed that too.

Fast Forward a week...I've got pins. But I'm noticing two scary similarities on the fruit from the Maz tub (black/blue fruit listed above) and the Nepal tub (pictures provided below)

First...I see two fruits in the Nepal that have this same weird mark that one of the fruit on my Maz tub had.  A picture of the this from a separate post (Maz) https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25844766

Second.... several of the fruits have brown stripes going up them. This occured in both tubs...and in both tubs there were exposure to what I think is substantial H202.

Makes me think I should harvest these now before I lose them like those pictured above.  But then again...what are these weird white disfigurations present in two different strains...and why the brown stripes in both?

Is this fruit even safe to consume?

Thank you all for any help and guidance you can provide!

It's decomposing and turning into concentrate. It's very strong and best way to preserve it.
You can evaporate the water.
If you keep that concentrate for some time it will turn into crystals.

An Update:

Fruits are growing, but there are substantially more fruits with brown stripes up the stem and curious white holes where the stem meets the cap.

I took a couple of close-ups of what I'm now calling the phenomenon

It almost looks like the veil is breaking away...but only on part of the mushroom and at a very early age. Here is a picture of a fruit of the same strain but isolated in a mason jar (Chronic Tek)

The veil is starting to break away, I harvested this fruit because the cap began to touch the inside of the mason jar.

Would love any input.  Well....maybe not any help....

The last pic kind of looks like normal veil tearing but now that you're indicating holes and things, you don't have any bugs or anything in there do you?

Other than that the  updated pic looks pretty healthy

Thanks Nero. Checked on em this morning... several veils have "torn" yet the fruits are so small.

I picked the ones that tore... their gills are white. Drying them out now...

Look much better!

How's the moisture content in the mycelium?  Is it possible the first fruits aborted from dry substrate?

I guess it's possible but that wouldn't explain the smell of vinegar would it? And to all spontaneously abort like that in such a small time frame...

In any case, I'm thankful for what I've got. And thankful for your input

Daily update:

*This concerns the tub of Nepals...the tub of Maz that turned black will never be seen again*

I'm noticing two different types of fruit forming.  The first part is more of "the phenomenon" I've mentioned above, veils seeming to be non-existent during the growing process or breaking away prematurely.

I've harvested these fruits, please take a look at these pictures.  The gills are white, completely exposed, and showing when the mushroom is so tiny. There are no spores that have been dropped, some of them grew without the veil.  H202?

The second group of fruit appears to be healthy mushrooms that are growing with the veil intact. I have let these ones stay in the tub hoping they will continue to grow...though I noticed a slowing of growth this morning.

Could h202 be making some of these fruits veiless and sporeless?

Update:

Fruits grew slightly; I again harvested those whose veils had broken or were getting very close.

I'm starting to believe that the whatever else the h202 did, it damaged the mycelium enough to stunt the growth of the fruit bodies.

My only final question is if anyone believes this fruit is not safe to consume?

Could just be some weird genetics causing that as well.

They look fine to me, I assume they smell normal?
