Is it physically possible to have infinite possibilities? * 1
    #25844694 -

If the laws of physics are absolute, and if these laws prevent certain things from being physically possible, does this not cancel out the idea of infinite possibility?

Can infinity exist physically, or is it an abstract idea?

Physics itself has suggested the possibility of the "multiverse," in which an infinite -- or at least astronomically huge -- order of parallel universes exists in some higher-dimensional space. The idea is that the laws of physics among these different universes can vary -- a little or a lot.

The impetus for suggesting this may actually be real comes from all over the place -- quantum mechanics, string theory, inflationary cosmology, M theory and all that. Given that this multiverse comes out of the math of a bunch of different fields is, to me, interesting. Either way, this could be a scientific basis for a truly infinite cosmos.

But the difference between "infinite" and "astronomically huge" is astronomically huge.

So the laws of physics are not absolute, which creates a whole new thread of questions...

I won't pretend to be studied in any of these things. I'm having a hard time expressing my own thoughts in this thread, so understanding a bunch of geniuses is gonna take some time.

Anyway...

If the universe is infinite because it is always expanding, at the present moment it still has to be quantifiable. In the same way a tree is always growing, that tree is also always a certain size.

And if the universe is always expanding, what exactly is it expanding into? More space?

If by physical you mean the present moment, then it would only be a subset of infinity in time. Time itself seems to come and go, suggesting a verse inside a greater verse. Or perhaps, time is more constant with one universal 'moment' preceded by the next (where there is energy there must be time). I.E. the universe does not hold it's breath.

I think of expansion more like a constant change in the relationship of all things. I don't suspect expansion will happen forever. My layman theory is that eventually expansion will result in a situation where the relationship can no longer support itself and the physical universe will simply dissolve, being nowhere. Physical distance no longer having effect is opportunity for that energy to express in a new singularity. Nowhere, everywhere, all one?

why there is reality and patterned, law-like consistency at all, rather than noise or non-reality is not a question physics answers. It's a question physics presupposes an answer to in order to provide other answers.

infinite contradictions and infinite errors are both infinite.
infinite possibilities are still infinite possibilities even after removing infinite errors.
math with infinity is always infinity. the number is not a fundamentally fixed amount.

Until this thread...every time I conceived of infinity it was always sortable to a thread of different but complete sub sets...so I would have said it is only abstract that it exists...

But then when Rahz brought up the idea of time..being eternal and infinitely long...I couldn't quite capture it like I did when thinking of infinity and its many subsets...which are a product of the rules of physics that take place in the mind..or otherwise the laws of the mind..

But the concept of time..seemed to be both going on and on forever...or was at least too large to bring down and quantify completely..though I could see it just being a larger set...

Not sure..but I think time is a winner in being both concrete and abstract at the same time..but maybe only concrete in a metaphorical image..

Thank you for your Time...

if light is traveling through a frozen indeterminate world of possibilities.

then, of course.

the future is open and not predetermined.

That doesn't mean there are infinite possibilities. I think we can safely say  there are no cotton candy planets with unicorn moons orbiting them, right?

The reason I present such a silly idea like that is because we have shows like rick and Morty (which I love too) convincing people that there are infinite wacky universes out there with fart planets or whatever the fuck. That is NOT logical though, science says these things are not possible. Therefore "infinite possibility" is not real.

Again, I realize it's a cartoon but there are people out there acting like ita a guide to the universe.

where does science say you cannot have a fart planet.
it does seem unlikely, but science is not the keeper of a list of likely things.

Having an invisible God who judges us seems more plausible than that, but people dismiss that pretty handily.

light is traveling through a frozen indeterminate world of possibilities.

the finite expansion of the universe constrained by gravity is a result of what is possible.

all possibilities are possible within the infinite.

within the finite however, all things are possible except for the possibility of nothing.

the exclusion of nothing from the finite subset allows for expansion of the finite by reducing the size of nothing.

within the infinite, nothing is merely a placeholder void of property.

the expansion of the finite subset reduces nothing but since nothing has no finite limitations being an intrinsic part of the infinite, its capacity manages any expansion of the finite.

gravitational forces are limited by the power production of electromagnetic energy, both of which are finite.

gravity and electromagnetics along with low and high nuclear produce a cycle where creation perpetuates itself.

nothing neither assists or detracts from this process, it does however allow for its expansion.

as time and space expand within the infinite, depending on position, everything appears possible on multiple levels within the an ever increasing subset.

the only possibility that remains impossible is nothing.

gravitational forces remain intact as long as they reside in the subset, as do the other four recognized primary forces of nature.

when all possibilities have been expired then and only then will there be nothing.

for all possibilities to expire, the finite structure must have within itself an inherent ability to transform itself back into the infinite via the placeholder of nothing.

an exhausted finite probability remaining contained within the infinite, held in place by nothing.

reduce what is possible to nothing and what is left is the inverse of infinite limitations.

I'll take a guess and agree there are no cotton candy planets, but that doesn't mean there aren't infinite universes.

Infinity can exist as sets. Infinite numbers between 1 and 2. Infinite numbers between 2 and 3.

All possible universes could represent an infinite set.

I tend to think in terms of the holographic universe concept where the physical world is more like a projection.  And within the infinite projected (quantum?) possibilities and paths, each of us has an awareness focusing on one spot at a given time.
