I emailed them. They said I'd need receipts to go to the hardware store I bought them from to get a refund. This is the 2nd box where this has happened and they're completely different brands. To clarify, I'm not looking for tips on how to get a new box of gloves or how to buy gloves, just seeing if anybody else has experienced this and whether or not they have solutions for the shitty gloves. I'm assuming bad quality control.

You bought 1000 gloves for $10 at HD?

Do you have the green iso? It's got detergent or some shit in it...

No, just regular iso without additional ingredients. Never bought the green version with glycerin added. And as I said, certain parts of the "batch" of gloves had the issue, but not others, so I'm thinking it's not the iso. I flipped the gloves inside out and had the same issue persist. Washed them in the sink, wiped 'em dry and experienced the same thing.

I've only ever bought latex-free, powder-free, disposable nitrile gloves for this hobby. Anybody know if other types would cause this so I can maybe point toward it being the batch if I email the company?

I asked about this previously and think bod said he's experienced it. But anybody ever have their gloves produce some soapy, slippery residue after putting iso on them? I just bought a brand new 100 pack of latex-free, nitrile gloves, and after wiping with iso, they get little soap bubbles and make EVERYTHING impossible to handle. Pretty infuriating when you're all setup and need to do a bunch of stuff.

Happens to me on almost every box ever of all different brands idk why either. Powder free nitrile

I've seen it from time to time but it's never consistent throughout a whole box

Your contamination rate for jars and petris is 95% or above? That's a number you pulled from your ass or do you keep track? Or perhaps I'm misreading.

I also think you may want to revisit the whole dirty hands without gloves thing now that you have a flow hood. Never used one and know very little about them, but still air as opposed to a stream of air is much different. I wouldn't try and clean up a plate with your hood, for instance.

I use a lot of nitrile gloves (car repairs, wood finishing, aseptic work, cleaning, etc.) and Harbor Freight has just about the best deal I've come across locally. And most importantly, they're not shit and dont break easily at all. I get the 5 mil $8 for 100, but I have gotten the 7 mil which are $10 for 50 which you can reuse endlessly.

I don't have that residue problem with the ones from HF

I can not speak for the person you ask this of but my agar work is coming out at about the 90 percent contam rate (or some just not growing).  This is at about 50 or so petris or small jars or mini rounds.

I got a few good but almost all bad.  Some times it is a week or two in and some tiny satellite spots of trig will start to grow.  Other times it is water spots and the mycelium just stoping from expanding.  It has turned out harder then I thought.  I have started to make the agar softer now to see if that helps but am not far into that yet.  I also am using an exacto knife and find it hard to cool down enough and have seen a few small contams where I cooled it on a few plates.  Still air box.
I am at 60 percent contam on about ten 5lbs bags of bulk.  The four doing good are not grown out yet and may still contam.  Eatables.

Some pour and some no pour with premix agar.
Cheers

There's too many variables to diagnose here. You should make a thread detailing your process and post a video of you working in your SAB. I did this early on and it helped immensely.

The problem with a hot X-acto knife was also one I experienced early on. Try wrapping the end of the handle in foil. But I would recommend buying an actual scalpel with a pack of blades. The #7 scalpel handle and #11 blades are the best combo, IMO. The blade heats up quickly and the heat doesn't transfer up to the handle.

Softer agar wouldn't do anything to combat satellites or contams, but might make it easier for them to germinate. I experienced a pretty high contam rate when I first switched to pouring petris, but that was to be expected since I'd never used them before and needed to get my sterile Tek down. Now I can pour them without a problem.

You should make a thread about this, for sure. I'm confident we can identify the issues and get your success rate up.

Thanks, bro. Definitely going to check those out when I'm in need next. Or if these replacements shit the bed.

I don't lose a lot of stuff... when I do, it's snuck it's way through into a box before I catch it, typically showing up with, or just after pinset development... I'm modestly estimating 1 of 20 boxes lost to contamination... I do primarily 2qt 1:1 shoeboxes, so doesn't take long for the numbers to add up... again, being mindful of where I'm placing my hands, even conscientiously in relation to flow:lifting lids tilted towards the hood, while pulling in towards me:never placing my fingertips in the very front, or over the lip of lids... I don't suggest it, and admit that it's "bad practice"... but I'm a minimalist  (you might say lazy) and if I can get away with it, I'll continue doing it lol... so far so good!(knocks on wood)

I'm not figuring germ, T1, or T2 plates as I expect them to be dirty and discard after transfers take anyhow... so figure is based on "starting" with (what I felt to be) a "clean culture"

Personally, I like their 3 mil nitrile gloves.  I work in latex gloves all day but really like the thin nitrile for mycology.

COOL NEW DISCOVERY Regarding Cultivation TEKS!!
With previous experience in these cultivating these Beauties, I had been doing the PF TEK (BRF & VERMICULITE), NOW Trying to the POPCORN TEK for a bulk substrate. I had the idea to add Brown Rice Flour to the already soaked grain (popcorn). In theory the the vermiculite is there to retain water, while the BRF the nutrients the spores need to begin colonizing. Unable to find ANY VERMICULITE, AND not discussion on a replacement. I resorted to the POPCORN TEK with a little twist of my own. SPRINKLING JUST ENOUGH BRF TO COAT THE POPCORN GRAINS BEFORE STERILIZATION . What this does essentially is give the spores something to grip onto, while dripping down the grain upon injection. SO FAR, HAS BEEN 6 DAYS SINCE INJECTIONS AND THE POPCORN+BRF JARS HAS SHOW SIGNIFICANTLY MORE GROWTH OVER JUST POPCORN GRAINS JARS INITIALLY DURING THIS PERIOD OF TIME.

PS- SORRY FOR LONG POST, THIS IS MY FIRST ONE. AND DIDNT KNOW HOW TO START A NEW THREAD EITHER:wink:
BUT ITS NICE TO BE A PART OF THE COMMUNITY. WOULD LOVE TO HEAR SOME FEEDBACK!!

Start here.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24297804

Most don't like popcorn.

No one adds verm to grain. Just prep grains correctly.

If you wanna do grains, you should learn agar to inoculate, not straight spore syringe.

PF-Tek is good for receiving straight spores, but less efficient than grains.
